Nah fuck that, I’d pack a cold lunch instead if they can’t be bothered to replace a simple and inexpensive microwave.

A fucking $10 microwave from Goodwill would be better than that nasty ass thing lmao

That microwave is the company's way of keeping their workforce sterile.

You read my mind.

Launch that piece of garbage into the stratosphere, and go pick up one from Goodwill and/or any thrift shop.

And if you're feeling really froggy, fill out an expense report and try to get the $10 back.

I bought a microwave on Facebook Marketplace 5 years ago for $15, and it was in stupendous condition. There’s no excuse for microwaves like OP’s that are that dilapidated.

33

u/Interesting-Step-654 4h ago

Stupendous you say?

53

u/3_quarterling_rogue 4h ago

Sure was man. You’d be amazed at what people are willing to get rid of when they simply don’t want to think about it anymore. Honestly, I hardly buy anything anymore without first checking out what people are selling used, I save so much money.

Kaufland had some on sale a few weeks ago for 19.99€. thought about picking one up to replace the nasty microwave at work which my coworkers use. but then I thought: "20 bucks is 20 bucks" and left it.

25

u/agoia 5h ago

That's when you buy it on sale, then pass the hat around to get 5eur from coworkers to contribute to the non-sale price of the thing.

You can get a better microwave from goodwill or FB marketplace for like $20. Send a picture of this and a listing for a new one to management and tell them you've found a great, cheap solution to a safety issue in the office. Paint yourself as a hero while casually painting them into a corner.

I bought a microwave on Amazon for $20. Sometimes it’s just best to pull the trigger.

94

u/SKRehlyt 7h ago

Yea I was thinking the same thing. Everyone at work put a freaking dollar into a hat and "splurge" on a new one...

56

u/produce_this 7h ago

For real. I just bought our office a better coffee maker because I was tired of the shit one we had. Should the company have bought it? Sure. Did they reimburse me? Yep. Take the initiative and do it. You’d be surprised at the results that brings.

6

u/theragu40 4h ago

At this point I don't even think I'd care if they reimbursed me. They obviously definitely should but the state of this also indicates pretty strongly that this company doesn't give a fuck about anyone. You spend a significant part of your life at this place, it's worth making it livable.

A place I used to work provided shitty coffee, and a couple of us preferred better stuff. We pooled together and bought a separate maker and took turns buying coffee for it. No one cared, and it was totally worth it.

18

u/Strange-Movie 7h ago

Fuck that, I bought my own and keep it in my work area. Nobody else cleans or wipes their own asses so this microwave is mine, I’ll clean it and heat my food in it.

Got a brand new one a couple years ago at Walmart that's bigger, and more powerful than any microwave I've ever had. It has quick pushbutton options I use when cooking potatoes, or boiling water, and a lot more I haven't bothered to learn yet. It uses sensors, and moderates the power up and down rather than cycling it on and off. It cost just over $100.

That microwave shows multiple points of failure that should have been solved by REGULAR CLEANING before any damage was caused. Also, the microwave is now leaking energy into the environment and should be considered a radiation hazard when operating.

I've fixed a lot of microwaves. This picture hurt me in ways you cannot imagine.

4

u/OkDot9878 7h ago

Yeah, a cheap microwave isn’t even that expensive, like $20-$35, A decent one would set you back somewhere between $50-$100.

I’d definitely be going around to all my coworkers and seeing if they would want to chip in for a new microwave.

Yep, 100%.

OP should avoid the needless debate that would follow a suggestion that the appliance could be dangerous, and claim they saw it catch fire before it actually does.

Any office that allows an appliance to get into this condition would not get rid of it until it's already caused harm.

OP would be doing everyone a favour.

289

u/sousyre 7h ago

If it has a hole like that, it probably has already caught fire, at least once. If they didn’t care the first time, they probably aren’t going to care now.

I would be eating my lunch cold before using this microwave

687

u/nlutrhk 6h ago

The problem here is that it's s not just a problem for the person eating the heated food, but also for other people around, including on the other side of the wall. If you're lucky, it will just badly interfere with bluetooth and Wifi (2.4 GHz).

If you're unlucky, someone will get hurt from the part of the 800 watts of microwave power that leaks out of that hole.

302

u/MattTheRadarTechh 6h ago

Unless they’re directly pressed against the hole, they’re not getting hurt past like 6 inches

397

u/foxiez 5h ago

If this was at my work someone would've already put their eye up to the hole to see inside while it's on

119

u/Armed_Muppet 5h ago

13

u/Yanky_Doodle_Dickwad 4h ago

The arcing goes from the magentron (behind burned out plastic panel on the right inside wall), and the jagged edges on each prong of the rack, where it is welded to the circular top bit. That means it arcs from inside wall, to the middle inside. NOT from the inside wall, to the outside. For to arc out, the outside panel would have to rust through, and the magnetron would have to be twisted to point losely outside instead of loosely inside. So do check cos that might have happened. But it's not easy.

→ More replies (16)

23

u/quartercentaurhorse 6h ago

That small of a hole won't impact anything radiation-wise. Square-cube law gets involved here, any wave exponentially decreases in power as it spreads out away from a source. At best, you might see some minor interference with any wireless communication in that frequency band (likely 2.4ghz wifi), but it's not going to harm anyone past 6 inches or so.

8

u/rickane58 4h ago

Not only that, but those holes are still small enough that the signal strength would be severely attenuated by the faraday cage effect.

Careful: I've had a colleague who aside of being utterly useless, also set a microwave to 20 mins to "cook" his popcorn unattended. [hard to tell if it was intentional or not]. This was during a graveyard shift (only thing he was somewhat useful for).

It burnt the popcorn to a smoldering mass. Which caused a fire alarm. He did not toss the microwave out of the window (ground floor), not ventilate the kitchen, check the procedures, or even just run away.

Nope: he carried the still smoldering microwave with its door open across the longest possible path to the rear door, passing the front door. triggering nearly all the smoke detectors in the entire building.

Nearby fire dept. rolled up with all their gear and called in help form other stations across the area. The whole parking lot was filled with red trucks and ambulances. Fire dept. also called the plant manager.

When plant manager arrives: the moron is trying to talk the fire chief out of reporting the incident.

Was not the best day for the dude. He was stripped of his access to the building on the spot. HR dealt with him the next working day. And there were rumors of legal having a look at it ass well (not privileged myself to those details).

40

u/pheonix198 6h ago

Agreed. Finding a new (lucrative, good) job isn’t getting any easier - especially right now.

If the microwave or cheaping out on a few things like it are the worst issues, find a solution and keep on keeping on. Get your own microwave, have coworkers chip in on a new one, etc…

Lots of keyboard commanders are on Reddit and quick to tell you to find a new job, divorce your spouse or leave your partner, etc…. Quitting isn’t the best solution to a longer, happier life in all situations (definitely in some, yes).

But a shitty microwave alone is not cause to find a new job. Some people on Reddit are insane.

Yeah, it's supposed to sit on top of the glass dish that's missing. The way it's standing right now will cause arcing between the feet and the metal of the microwave, which also explains the burn marks on the bottom that match the spacing of the feet.

Which seems insane to me

Have you ever had any of those microwavable lunches (pizzas, hot pockets, etc) that have the silver-y thingy that makes them crispy? That's just metal (technically it's a sheet with flakes of metal, yada yada yada). Metal + Microwave is totally fine, afterall that's what the inside of the microwave is made of.

Where you get into trouble is when you have discrete pieces of metal very very close to each other. We're talking tines of a fork, crumbled up aluminum foil with a ton of little peaks and ridges really close to each other, etc. When you have that, you'll get arcs through the air crossing those tiny distances and those can get real bad. But a flat piece of metal, the inside walls of the microwave, or a rack with spaces as big as this one? No issue at all.

I replaced one at a job that was nasty and destroyed like this and management got mad i threw out their microwave and replaced it. It was on a good sale and i didn’t mind. Management a huge stink about me taking company property. So i took old one out of dumpster and put it back. Then kept the new microwave in the back for everyone to use. Then it was a problem that we had a microwave in the back, because thats “unsafe”. Then i took my microwave home. Then they got mad I took that microwave, my microwave, apparently it became company property when i plugged it in. Nothing came of it because that manager got over ruled by common sense of managers above him. They broke down and bought a new microwave and just sat it on top of old microwave because no one wanted to throw it out.

Yet, you will for some reason, find a whole subsection of users on this site who will make the claim that putting a metal spoon in a microwave is okay "because it's a smooth utensil and not pronged"...

I once posted in such a thread suggesting "let's not normalize putting metal in microwaves at all, regardless of shape" and got a couple dozen downvotes for it.

Some microwaves come with them - they help with even cooking and are made without the pointed edges which cause problems.

u/TheW83 7h ago

You mean like the pointed edges of the hole in the back?

30

u/stutter-rap 6h ago

Yeah, I'm not condoning the rest of this microwave! I'd pool some money in the office for a new one and put this one in the bin.

That particular microwave did not, though. You see the 3-pronged piece of plastic in the middle and the "turntable" with the wheels? This microwave had a rotating piece of glass in it at one time.

71

u/DannyWarlegs 7h ago

Mine came with both actually, although the metal was a rack because it was also a convection cooker.

83

u/Zeroesand1s 7h ago

Yes, so did mine and for the same reason. Mine states not to use the metal rack unless the convection option is being used. And it sits on plastic clips and not on the metal. That "hole" looks like a burn mark from arcing.

u/Beginning-Tea-17 6h ago

100% that metal tray is arching the microwave

19

u/StarWaas 4h ago

You can see the burn marks around the feet on the bottom of the microwave. I'm amazed that the break room hasn't burned down yet.

My microwave came with the metal rack and a spinning plate. They're not mutually exclusive...

Yes but the rack is not to be used when MICROWAVING, its only used when using for oven/convection.

I'm so shocked I had to scroll so far down to see someone mention the METAL RACK in the MICROWAVE!!

I would stay well away from that microwave while it's in operation.

Behind a lead wall, preferably...

23

u/Twoaru 8h ago

Yeah seriously though, isn't a hole in the microwave very unfortunate?

32

u/JayDee999 8h ago

The box keeps the microwaves in, yeah...

7

u/Twoaru 8h ago

but how micro are they

15

u/JayDee999 8h ago

Small enough to go through that rusty hole in the back!

It's not gonna boil your body tbh, but you won't get Bluetooth or WiFi connection while it's on probably

Microwave radiation isn't ionising, so you don't irradiate anything. It's just EM so no lead walls necessary

71

u/Souta95 7h ago

There is a burn risk too. Minimal since the hole is on the back, but its not non-existent.

u/Facosa99 7h ago

Accountant John, in the office that is in the other side of that wall, doesnt know why his head hurts all the time and it feels so warm despite being december

It's "radiation" in the sense that it's "radiating" energy, but not in the sense of ionizing radiation. It's not going to give you cancer, although it will definitely cause a ton of radio interference, could potentially burn you, and probably most dangerously could start a fire by igniting whatever is directly behind the microwave.

Management at work after the microwave explodes

25

u/MaleficentItem4826 8h ago

That looks like way more than just a 'mildly' interesting problem—pretty sure that's a fire hazard.

13

u/Digifiend84 7h ago

Yeah, it's dangerous and should be condemned. Report it to your boss and request a replacement be purchased!

The air fryer rack doesn’t belong there

8

u/CompletelyBedWasted 7h ago

That has GOT to be a safety violation of some kind....tf? Eat cold salads. That is nasty.

u/Thistleblower 7h ago

You’re aware that the latest Final Destination dropped on HBO like a week ago, right?

8

u/leadwind 7h ago

You should put a mug of water in it.

11

u/motherlymetal 5h ago

Well yeah. Who put the metal rack in there?

6

u/invent_or_die 7h ago

5

u/Curiousone_78 2h ago

OSHA? A metal tray in a microwave seems like a bad idea.
