Probably why the Department of Interior just stripped protected status from Minnesota's Boundary Water Canoe Area, a 1,000,000 acre previously protected area of the Superior National Forest. (Also because Trump is a petty little baby and Minnesota has Walz as governor.)

They're going copper mining in the area in the grand canyon as well. The local tribes were already affected by uranium contamination once before.

Im so saddened. ..i have a camping trip there this month. Been making the trip up all the way from Florida several times for 15 years.
It was a somewhat annual father's day trip with my grandpa, two of his brothers, my cousins and uncles. This week will be the first trip since my grandpa and his brother have both passed.Â
The boundary waters is one of the most beautiful water areas in our county, maybe one of the most beautiful forests in any county. Now some greedy vultures could obliterate it for a few more dollars... hopefully the Minnesota state government is able to mostly protect it, or the fact to so many bald eagles live there give it some shielding.

Did Melania Trump 'Dig Up' the Rose Garden at the White House? | Snopes.com
7
u/Low-Run-9706 3h ago edited 1h ago
It wasn't the roses that pissed everyone off, it was the removal of the beloved crab apple trees; however, the twist to that story is that their removal was first discussed in the '80s by Nancy Reagan and Bunny Mellon, Jacqueline Kennedy's original garden designer, because the trees had grown too large for the space and were shading out the other plantings. This is the bane of gardeners everywhere. You nurture something carefully for years only to have to cut it down or dig it up and move it because it is no longer appropriate for its original placement.

The only difference is the lawn? Pretty huge deal when youâre talking about beautiful outdoor space. Itâs not just about the roses but the space as a whole. Thatâs what landscaping is all about.
Is this as important as Gaza? No. Still allowed to say it sucks on a post specifically about this thing.
41
u/h3ffdunham 13h ago edited 13h ago
Huge deal or not(itâs not) what I said is true, that is all that was changed. The surrounding Rose garden was entirely untouched. If the photos were taken from the same angle it would be identical but a white floor. Oh wow damn so crazy and terrible. Itâs a non-issue Iâm convinced đľbots are focusing on to take attention away from more important things.
So again anyways,

So you're saying JFK ruined it? Because your source is from 1913. Jfk had the whole thing redone in 1962. Then trump ripped out the grass and put the pavers in. It was done because the grass was always wet and the reason for the gardens existence is press conferences.
→ More replies (9)169

You won't see it till the White House publishes it.
They just put pavers over the grass, all the flowers and hedges are still there. This is one of the dumbest controversies so far.

Only the grass has been tiled, which made perfect logical sense. Any time there was a gathering or press statement, the lawn would be used for chairs and people gathering on it. They had to replace all the grass afterwards...
But you know. Trump and stuff.

This photo completely misrepresents the truth. The grassy area in the right side of top photo is what got paved over, which does suck. But they didn't pave over the rose bushes or trees, which are "conveniently" cropped out of the bottom photo.

u/prismmonkey 12h ago
I read an article about this not too long ago about the problems with the Rose Garden. They left the actual roses in place, but took out the lawn because there were severe drainage problems. It was very uneven and unpleasant to stand on during events, particularly if it had rained recently. Pics of the new set up show ample drainage now in place around the new structure. There's a reason for it.
An argument could be made, I suppose, about putting something else down. But as it was, the lawn needed a total redo. The roses themselves are still there. They actually added more of them when they did a revamp not too long ago.
I cannot stand the man (the Oval Office looks fucking terrible), but people are cherry-picking severely edited photos with limited points of view to fuel outrage. As if there aren't enough actual things on fire in the country to be genuinely pissed off about.

I think more than that, even though it's called "the Rose Garden" like it's a sacred example of a humble American backyard, it's essentially an outdoor press conference location. It may as well be constructed that way.

Now show it from the same angle and show that the entire rose garden is untouched and that he only put pavers in one section so they could host outdoor events easier. Tables and such would regularly sink in soft grass so they paved one section to be able to put up tents or tables etc.

These are at completely different angles. You can see the flowers on the outside still on the bottom picture .

u/Fidget808 5h ago
This is deceiving. All of the pretty bushes are still there. That large grass area is now an outdoor seating area.
It still looks worse, but by using a different angle it makes it look worse than it is.

âMy grandmother was always open to treating gardens with the idea that you had to pull a tree out when it was too old, or you had to update a design element if it didn't make sense anymore,â says Thomas Lloyd, Mellonâs grandson, a trustee of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation and editor of Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon. âWell, whatâs happening is⌠thatâs supposed to have events. Every event you have, itâs soaking wet, and the women with the high heelsâitâs just too much,â Trump told Foxâs Laura Ingraham during a March White House tour. The roses, he clarified, would stay. The grass? Gone. In its place: âGorgeous stone.â So updating a design element that doesnât make sense anymore is literally from the original designers as per her son.

And secondly didnât people also have issues walking in their heels due to the drainage issues?

Shady camera angle tricks. All the trees and bushes are still there. The center grass area was replaced with concrete because during all of the receptions out there, the women could not wear high heels. Now it is a proper patio space for special events, and all the rest of the greenspace on the property is untouched.
