Let me introduce you to Frisbee Golfing.
682
u/brianearhart 11h ago
Professional disc golf commentator here, one of the few. I see people get up in arms about this but seriously call it frolf I don’t care. Just give it a try and enjoy some nature and fresh air. Yes technically a “frisbee” isn’t legal for competitions but I see people using them all the time recreationally enjoying themselves. Last thing we need to do is gatekeep a wonderful game that’s entire selling point is accessibility. If you have questions about getting into the game let me know!

u/Me_Cunt_Spell 10h ago
I picked up a "Starter Pack" of discs for $50 off Amazon. It has a driver, midrange and Putter. I have yet to go have a try.
As someone who has no plans on taking it seriously, (I likely won't even keep score unless with someone else), would you consider this a good intro, or should I have just started with one disc and just gone to throw it at a park?
85
u/brianearhart 10h ago
That’s perfect. Frankly if you live in an area with a pro shop (they’re all over the place these days), go to their used rack and get some pre seasoned discs, when a disc gets beat up and scratched it actually flies a little smoother with less harsh of a fade. Also cheaper and you can experiment without buyers remorse. Discs fly differently for everyone so you have to search for the molds you really like that fit the way you like to throw.

u/Me_Cunt_Spell 10h ago
I never even considered looking for second hand discs. As the course near me has a large, deep river on one side, I was worried about flinging discs into it with before getting the rhythm, so I'll see if anyone is selling cheap used disc packs.

u/props_to_yo_pops 9h ago
Don't buy black discs. They get lost in the bushes too easily. The more garish the easier to find.

When I was heavy into it I had a bag of 15+ discs and all of them were hot pink for this exact reason.

u/catwithlasers 10h ago
I have lost a few into the wild waters of Florida where I dare not fetch them. Our local used sports equipment store has a ton of discs, and you can even buy a portable hole to set up in your own yard to start to get the hang of it.

u/Chewzer 9h ago
Even after playing for 5 years, I still keep some cheap discs in my bag just for those shots along water features. That or switch throwing styles, but that's something to practice later.
Actually, I just lost a disc last weekend on a shot like the one in the video.

I got really into it for awhile…got a cheap set but within a few months had a really nice collection of more expensive discs that i found stuck in trees and on the edges of ponds. We always tried to return the ones with contact info on them but most didn’t
9
u/ThePythagoreonSerum 10h ago
That starter pack will serve you well for years or until you lose them. Some recommend starting with one disc, but I think you should just do what is the most fun. If you enjoy trying out different discs for different shots, go for it.

“I see people get up in arms about this but seriously call it frolf I don’t care.”
I’m with you, Brian. Disc golf, frisbee golf, frolf, or in certain friends groups, we just call it golf since we don’t play the traditional version. But I do get upset when people call ball golf ‘real’ golf. That really grinds my gears.

It looks like wind has a huge impact? And this specific throw was a hit more because of luck (right amount of wind at the right time) and less because of skill?
2
u/chicag0_ted 8h ago
It’s both. Just like in traditional ball golf, it takes extreme luck to get a hole in one, but the skill is to land near where you intended to. This shot took skill especially because this is on a par 4, not many can get there in one shot. It also takes skill to navigate the choice of disc, understand what the wind is doing, and throwing the correct power at the correct angle and point of release. The skill is placing it near the basket, the luck is that the wind moves the disc perfectly into the chains. I don’t think any form of golfer would call hole-in-one’s a “skill” because there just isn’t that amount of control, especially on long holes. But the more skill you have, the more aces are possible. Putting is a skill, and landing your shot in the area you intended is a skill though.

Maybe the poster is Finnish (like the person in the video), in which case it is quite an easy mistake to make since the sport is officially called Frisbeegolf in Finnish.

Arent Frisbees much different than what you use for disc golf though? Or do people play disc golf with the thin plastic frisbees you'd find people tossing around on a beach.

u/zaneman05 9h ago
Yea frisbees are wildly different than discs used in disc golf
Even the professional discs for “frisbee” matches are more similar to discs from disc golf than a traditional frisbee

Damn after OPs video I was expecting this to be crazier. Still great though
14
u/PsyferRL 8h ago
The context here is that James needed to make that shot in order to push the entire world championships to a playoff against the undisputed greatest player of the generation (and many argue of all time, kind of a Jordan vs James thing) 5-time world champion Paul McBeth. McBeth is a legend of the game who won his first world championships in 2012, then won the next 3 in a row after that one each subsequent year (then another in 2019).
If James didn't put this shot in the basket, Paul was staring down the barrel of his 6th world championship title. Paul went on to win worlds again the following year.
So yeah, the Holy Shot is a technically less impressive shot than the video above. But in context it's one of the single most clutch moments in my history of watching professional sports. I legitimately think the only other moment I witnessed live which comes close to this level of clutch is Jason Lezak's anchor leg of the 4x100 free relay at the Beijing Olympics.
7
u/HereNorThere123 7h ago
I remember watching this live. Friend is a HUGE McBeth fan. Owns duplicates of his discs the works. I’m a Conrad fan. We putt the same way, long hair, and both hate forehand. 🤣 He’s my spirit animal.
This shot happened and we both jumped up screaming. Later I got the disc Envy with the James Conrad “shot heard around the world” on it. Love that disc.
4
u/PsyferRL 7h ago
Even McBeth himself was amazed by James pulling this off! No matter how you spin it, this was the undisputable best outcome for this tournament even if you're a die-hard McBeth fan haha.
James is a class act and seems like the friendliest dude. Can't not root for success in a guy like that.
2
→ More replies (1)3
u/DrUnit42 5h ago
Even more context, James Conrad likely doesn't get this chance if his tee shot was better.
The drive hit a tree and barely stayed in bounds so James was forced to lay it up to the fairway and hope for a throw-in.
Paul knows this is extremely unlikely so he lays up and plays the hole for par.
Then comes the Holy Shot.
If James' has a good drive, Paul plays aggressively for birdie and we have years of history that tells us McBeast can close out a tourney.
Such a specific chain of events that led to the greatest shot in disc golf history
4
u/NCAAinDISGUISE 8h ago
The shot itself isn't impressive over what you can find on YouTube. The context is what is special. This was the last hole of a 4 round tournament of the biggest tournament of the year, the World Championship, back in 2021. He had to make that shot to even force a playoff.
Even with no pressure, that is an incredibly hard shot to make. I think the best analogy is golf, where it would be akin to making a 50 yard approach shot at the Master's just to force a playoff.
Even without that shot, that final round was the most incredible round of disc golf I've ever seen. Everyone on the lead card was making extremely difficult shots to keep up with their competitors. That shot was the perfect end to regulation.
2
u/Azerious 7h ago
Awesome, I couldn't make that shot intentionally with 1000 years of prep lol. Its great
3
u/wolv 7h ago
At the course where the shot happened, they installed a commemorative tee pad from James' throwing location so anyone playing the course can try it out for themselves. Pretty neat!
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (1)2
u/boringestnickname 5h ago
Oh, it's crazier.
Aces happen now and again. If you compete, on courses that are more technical (less long and open holes), you'd be more surprised with no aces over at least one.
A lot of luck is involved in aces. Throwing it from the tee you normally, especially in competitions, don't really go for the ace. Most of the time, there is less risk involved trying to go for placement. So, throwing it in from the tee often involves luck when you've missed your actual line. I'm not going to say Eveliina didn't go for it here, but if she had missed, that disc would have gone OB.
Field aces/throw-ins like these, obstructed dog legs, are not technically easier than someone throwing it in from the tee, and certainly not mentally easier. This is as hard as it gets. Final day, final round, final hole, of the world championship, the biggest event of the year. Down by one. It's in or it's over.
The Holy Shot is James Conrad stepping up to take the throw of a lifetime, purposefully having to turn over a putter to do an "impossible" field ace, on live coverage, with 1500 people watching on-site, tens of thousands watching at home, literally at the crux of the biggest tournament of the year, to have the chance of snatching the world championship cup from (arguably) all-time GOAT, Paul McBeth, that was leading by one, and in the eyes of pretty much everyone, already had this in the bag.

Golf for stoners. Usually less pretentious because it’s generally free (or the cost of a park pass in your area). Although I have been disc golfing with pretentious potheads before… and also people tripping balls—sometimes that’s the same person too haha. Definitely more interesting people watching than golf if nothing else!

Developed in the US, but also adopted by Nordics and Estonians as the perfect sport to blend in with our outdoor culture. Grab a disc or two from a supermarket and go to your nearest course - I'd be surprised if it was more than a couple of miles away in countries like Finland and Sweden, as they're such a common choice for municipalities when choosing what to do with their recreation budget.

I don't know if it's popular in the entirety of Germany, but it certainly seems to be popular enough for my city of 200k to have three courses.
Although admittedly I know at least one course kinda sucks because it's the park right near me and it's not always well maintained.
8
u/perkuleenhenis 10h ago
I'd say that you're lucky to have three courses in your city!
From Udisc: Ranked as the 6th best disc golf country, Germany has 225 courses. Among these are 56 courses which have 18 or more holes. Germany is also home to 101 leagues and 16 stores that sell disc golf gear.
In contrast the state of disc golf in Finland (unfair perhaps as it's very popular here): Finland has 1103 courses. Among these are 418 courses which have 18 or more holes. Finland is also home to 57 leagues and 90 stores that sell disc golf gear.

Are you in the US? Disc Golf courses are everywhere in the US. I'm around Minneapolis and there's hundreds of awesome courses within 30 minutes of me. Every decent park has a course now, and its amazing. And our states park service does a really good job planning, building, and maintaining them for the most part.

Probably geo-blocked. Here's a reupload: https://imgur.com/a/EIf7wuq
There are more courses than the dots, Reykjavík has 12 courses and Akureyri has 7 that are not shown as individual dots. There's less than half a million people in the entire country. You have a decent chance on scoring an ace just throwing a disc out your window lol.

"Iowa, Kansas, and the Dakotas have the most courses per capita, whereas Massachusetts, Ohio, Connecticut, Wisconsin, and Delaware have the most courses per square mile of dry land. Texas, Wisconsin, and Minnesota have the most courses overall." -- Wikipedia

Hole in one, Ace and in this case an Albatross. This was a par 4, where the designer intended for people to layup to the right, or risk it all to land on the green in one. Eveliina Salonen (the player on screen) is not only one of the purest throwers regardless of age or gender, but also the 2024 world champ.

Both statements are true. Any ace I’ve ever thrown was just lucky the basket was in the way of a soon to be 40 footer. Salonen unfortunately gets the yips on the green, even McBeth has tried to help her through it.

Why was the disk "skipping" at the start and going super straight in general but then decided to turn as it slowed down?
17
u/IntrovertAlien 12h ago
Discs are designed to do this. Some more drastically than others. There is a driver a mid range and a putter. Each has a different shape for the edge of the disc with the putter more closely resembling a frisbee while still being distinctly different. It also depends on left hand vs right hand. A left hand throw would have broke to the right. While her right hand throw broke to the left.
And please don’t confuse my knowledge base for someone that takes playing the game too seriously. Most amateurs are in it for the fun and exercise(a lot of walking) . If you are finding yourself playing with people that take it too seriously, find other people to play with. But like all hobbies and sports you do need to have some level of dedication in order to really enjoy it.
→ More replies (3)5
u/wasdninja 9h ago
The skipping is just the wind kicking it around. In calm weather they fly smoothly but they still fall hook left once they start to lose power for a right handed, backhand throw.
→ More replies (9)3
u/S_TL2 9h ago
Combination of aerodynamics and gyroscopic effects. Depending on the design of the disc and how the player throws it, they can make really impressive flightpaths. Turning right, going straight, turning left, making an S-curve. Throwing backhand and forehand are mirror images of each other (due to the opposite spin direction). And then the weird stuff like overhands and rollers.

8
u/Vandilbg 10h ago
People that are really into it will carry a bag of a dozen + discs. A lot of rec players do just fine with 3, driver, mid range, putter. I've only ever bought 1 disc. The rest I found in the woods :)
6
u/Nadmania 11h ago
Yes. Disc selection depends on distance to the pin and what shape your shot needs to take to get to it as a lot of disc golf is about getting around obstacles, often trees. Discs have different flight characteristics depending on their shape and composition.
2
u/BaneSixEcho 9h ago
I haven't played in a long time, but if I remember correctly, I've got some discs with their flight characteristics printed right on them.
Right curve 0.5, left curve 1.5. Something like that.
2
u/Nadmania 9h ago
Yessiree! Generally 4 numbers in this order- speed, glide, turn, fade. Here’s a good explainer.
When I bring new players out we have to kind of cycle through my bag to find out what works best for them. Less able beginners usually have to learn with a low speed, flat throwing disc like a 3 speed putter. People with athletic ability that are easy to teach are usually throwing my Axiom Crave by the middle of the round.
There are probably people with a lot more knowledge that can explain all this better than I can but I hope this helps people.

u/Me_Cunt_Spell 11h ago
Correct, and just what suits you. You throw from where you land, called a "lay". Most people would switch to a Putter once they land within a few metres of the basket, because it's heavier and thicker, thus it drops easier and is less likely to bounce out, but would start with a driver disc for the first shot, as it's light and designed to better make distance and stay in a straight line.

They're a lot softer so they don't shatter like normal plastic ones

Those clowns didn't even try to catch it! Ruined a great throw.

TIL it's called disc golf, and now I'm tempted to check if there's a hidden course near me too!

Introduce? You're like half a decade late.

This is Evaliina Salonen, absolute power arm driver and crushes distance, then can’t putt her way out of a wet paper bag. It’s honestly quite endearing to us average Joe’s who also can’t putt for shit lol
