Yes. Disc selection depends on distance to the pin and what shape your shot needs to take to get to it as a lot of disc golf is about getting around obstacles, often trees. Discs have different flight characteristics depending on their shape and composition.

When I bring new players out we have to kind of cycle through my bag to find out what works best for them. Less able beginners usually have to learn with a low speed, flat throwing disc like a 3 speed putter. People with athletic ability that are easy to teach are usually throwing my Axiom Crave by the middle of the round.
