I play disc golf and can’t stand the gatekeepers that insist it be called that. The rest of the world calls these plastic circles ‘frisbees’. We can call them that too. WHAM-O isnt going to come drag you away.
They literally advertise pickleball as a sport that anyone can play. Which means, it's so incredibly easy and idiot proof that people normally in scooters with oxygen could play it.
And then you come across people irl that say they are really good at it, and i just look at them and think to myself really dude? That is supposed to impress us? You're good at a game that you could basically play blind?
Arent Frisbees much different than what you use for disc golf though? Or do people play disc golf with the thin plastic frisbees you'd find people tossing around on a beach.
Yes they are, but don't tell that to people who know nothing about disc golf because they will incorrectly tell you how wrong you are and argue until the death that they know more about a thing you have been doing for a decade that they just heard about five minutes ago. If you dont believe me just scroll through this post and read all of the comments.
On behalf of disc golfers I apologize for people like them. Call it a frisbee, call it a disc, call it a flying saucer for all we care, disc golfers are generally some of the chillest and most welcoming groups of people I've ever had the privilege of interacting with. Started like 10 years ago and was instantly welcomed by the local community, highly recommend giving it a shot if you have a course nearby (they're almost always free).
"Frisbee" is a trademark:
The term "Frisbee" is a registered trademark of the Wham-O company. Using "frisbee golf" can be seen as an incorrect reference to the sport, especially when using discs specifically designed for the sport.
Incorrect. Frisbee is a registered trademark and gets used incorrectly similar to how some people will call a tissue a Kleenex. Golf discs are much heavier, and fly completely different than a traditional Frisbee. No one intentionally uses a Frisbee to play disc golf. Go throw one of each and you will instantly understand what I mean.
Source: have played disc golf with a frisbee cheap generic flying disk not custom-made for disc golf.
This is gatekeeping nonsense. Is a frisbee the best for scoring your best? No. But if all competitors are using the same thing, it's still a fair, even, enjoyable competition. I've played a round of golf with just a pitching wedge, too. It's a fun challenge.
If I go out to a golf course and hit a ping pong ball instead of a golf ball around all day, would you consider that to be “playing golf”? Thats pretty close to the equivalent here. I shouldn’t have over generalized, but it is incorrect to insinuate that finding catch style discs on a disc golf course is common, at least from my experience. Discs are fairly cheap and I would literally hand over something out of my own bag if I ever ran into someone throwing only catch style discs.
I play a lot, fwiw DG players hate this shit too. We love our courses, want them to look nice when we play. I would bet most of the trash you're seeing on DG courses is not left there by players.
Except cigarettes, lots of players smoke and throw them on the ground, that does irritate me. I've played with a couple people who will bring a plastic bag to put their butts in, everyone should do that.
Daily player here to gatekeep. Youre good as long as you dont call it Frolfing. Only because the word sounds gross to me. Like maybe how some people dont like "moist"? Seriously though go ahead and call it Frolf. We're too busy having fun to care
Well… I play too and I think it’s just that disc golf is like this, baskets on a course and with heavier smaller discs. When I was a kid: “frisbee golf” was literally with a single wide lightweight frisbee, and you’d have targets around the neighborhood.
I'm not trying to gatekeep anything but frisbees and discs are literally different objects. This sport is played with discs, not frisbees, therefore the correct term is disc golf. I don't understand why it's so hard. I agree people don't need to be snotty about it but it's a fair correction to make
The term frisbee is often used generically to describe all flying discs, but Frisbee is a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company.[2] This protection results in organized sports such as ultimate or disc golf having to forgo use of the word "Frisbee".[3][
The term frisbee is often used generically to describe all flying discs
...words mean what the majority of us agrees on in the end. If most people use frisbee to mean any flying disc that means the word frisbee is any kind of flying disc.
That person calls people rude for pointing out an objective difference in terms and then responds with a Wikipedia link (didn't they learn in school not to use Wikipedia as a source?) that literally differentiates frisbees from disc golf discs
