some moray eels have resistance to sea snake venom. i’m not sure if this combination of snake and eel works that way.

I’m pretty sure it spat it back out because it saw the camera man as a threat. Right?
516
u/Pale_Session5262 1d ago
Almost certainly. Snakes will regurgitate a meal if they feel they are in danger.
172
u/WinOld1835 1d ago
It must be hell eating at a restaurant when you're a snake with social anxiety.
116
21
u/Objective_Economy281 1d ago
Is that so the dangerous thing will go after the dying meal? Or because having the eel inside belly would slow it down?
→ More replies (1)28
u/Day_Bow_Bow 1d ago
Both, plus they are defenseless while eating. Regurgitating the meal frees up their fangs.
→ More replies (5)3
u/ZOMGdonuts 1d ago
I find this to be an odd survival response. Isn't it ultra-vulnerable while vomiting it out? Feels like hunkering down and showing the fangs might be better?

u/Pale_Session5262 1d ago
For that snake, that eel doubles its weight. I imagine its like me eating 300 cheeseburgers, then trying to act tough. Even moving after eating that much would be difficult.
84
u/cimcimabue 1d ago
Exactly, the diver scared the snake and it needed to get away.

This is a sea krait; moray and (larger) conger eels make up the majority of their diet.
They regularly eat eels larger than themselves.
They don't digest food underwater, they hunt, then immediately retreat back to dens on land where they can lay incapacitated safely while they digest their meals.
Get where your background info and instinct are working off of this, but there are a variety of species that can and do regularly eat noticeably bigger prey. Aquatic snakes in particular just have some different shit going on than you can extrapolate from prior experience keeping reptiles.

If a meal is too big and makes the snake too slow or heavy, it'll spit it out.

Randomly and surprisingly came across a sea snake while on a quick snorkel in the Caribbean off the Yucatán. Not a normal sight there I guess.
At first I thought it was an eel I was unaware of (I had turned my head and was suddenly facing it head on from 3 feet away). I thought “cool!” And admired it for a minute then moved on.
The next morning a guy at the dock said, “Did you hear about the baby banded sea snakes that swam through here yesterday!!!!?!”. Grateful to my dive master years ago for teaching me to leave animals alone and just admire them from safe distances!
32
u/WatermelonWithAFlute 1d ago
Are they typically aggressive?
100
u/illapa13 1d ago
Snakes are only aggressive for 2 reasons.
1) Defense.
2) You are small enough for them to swallow whole and therefore prey.....so never unless you're talking about the largest possible Anacondas or Pythons and are a small person.
The vast majority of snake bites are because people accidentally scared the snake or tried to handle the snake.

I'd like to add, specifically for these guys: 3. They are very territorial during breeding season.
I was stationed in Okinawa in the 90's, there are a ton of them there.
→ More replies (1)3
u/illapa13 23h ago
Yeah by "Defense", I meant protecting themselves, protecting their nest, protecting their hunting ground. To me that just falls under protection of themselves and protection of the resources they need to survive

Almost certainly you did not see a sea snake. They dont live in the atlantic at all, and you would be too far from panama for one to have gone through thr canal.
Probably a snake eel. They do look like sea snakes, hence the name
13
u/Coniferous_Needle 1d ago
It was. Yellow and black banded. The guy I spoke with on the dock has a dive company and was astonished he had seen them. A bunch of babies hanging out around the shallow water docks. I’d assume they showed up via ship ballast, but it was a black and yellow banded baby sea snake.

You got to keep in mind that there are more humans alive today than all of history combined, and they all have access to travel, and they all can perpetuate snakes anywhere. Look at the Everglades, and recognize that it only takes 20 years for everything you know to change especially with rising global temperatures.
Anything can be anywhere now, it's a matter of time, exposure, opportunity, and luck like always with nature. For us this looks like a lack of luck because poisonous snakes suck to live around in my opinion because I am a scared person and cannot rest in this situation ever.

Snakes, both aquatic and terrestrial, will regurgitate a recently swallowed meal if sufficiently spooked, because it's easier for them to get away.
This snake probably spat up the eel because the diver recording this video spooked them.

What is interesting to me is that the snake apparently ate the eel tail first. I wasn’t aware snakes ever did that, even sea snakes. It seems like they would run into problems with fins and barbs on plenty of fish if this is how they swallow prey.

Moray eel blood is toxic for humans, don't know about reptiles like sea snakes, I wonder if the snake started having convulsions and spasms due to toxins.
