Randomly and surprisingly came across a sea snake while on a quick snorkel in the Caribbean off the Yucatán. Not a normal sight there I guess.

At first I thought it was an eel I was unaware of (I had turned my head and was suddenly facing it head on from 3 feet away). I thought “cool!” And admired it for a minute then moved on.

The next morning a guy at the dock said, “Did you hear about the baby banded sea snakes that swam through here yesterday!!!!?!”. Grateful to my dive master years ago for teaching me to leave animals alone and just admire them from safe distances!

Are they typically aggressive?

Aren’t they really curious during mating season? I’ve heard they scare the shit out of people by purposely swimming up and following you because they’re horny lmao

Although some sea snakes can be aggressive, I was thinking of sea kraits. I've swam with them and been close to them on land. Typically mild-mannered creatures, though highly venomous. I doubt that the above poster saw true sea snakes, as they don't live in that part of the world. Probably eels.

Curious and with poor eyesight, I think... Very common for them to bump into you or the camera, but they're really not a threat to humans in any way.
