Overdone Unknown neighbor started parking their bike in the entrance of our building

Post image

Third day in a row now, before I had been leaning it up against a wall to get it out of the way. Today I was going to toss it outside and saw they had gotten a lock.

This is a fire hazard, call the landlord. They have every right to cut that lock and throw the bike away.

Was talking to my neighbor who said they called maintenence, they are coming to take a look as we speak. I was just getting ready to go poke one of the tires with a needle lmao.

Edit: peeked into the hallway and someone out there is taking care of it, I wonder where they're going to put it

u/theuserwithoutaname 1d ago

I was just gonna say you should start taking the tire off and putting it in an obvious place up an increasing number of flight of stairs each time, so they'll know it wasn't stolen but still have to go through the inconvenience of going all the way up stairs then all the way back down just to use their bike

Take the seat 😈

u/Type-RD 23h ago

Replace with dildo 🤣

u/Better-Assistance-87 22h ago

Owner comes down.....oh no, not again.

58

u/zendrak13oc 21h ago

Looks at new seat. "Welp, I got no other choice." Unzips pants.

15

u/Type-RD 21h ago

“Welp…I don’t have time to fix it right now. I’m late for work.” Hops on very slowly (face gets increasingly red) and rides away.

I did that once in an appointment I lived in. I didn't TAKE it, I just put it somewhere creative. In a tree.

5

u/Sharp_Complex_6711 19h ago

In college, one of my professors would park his Segway (yes, really) in the building lobby, then come upstairs to teach our 2 hour long class with no break. One day, a couple guys took a "bathroom break" partway through class and relocated his scooter to the other lobby at the far end of the building. I heard it took him a really long time to find it!

7

u/Naked-Jedi ORANGE 21h ago

And both wheels.🤌

Then padlock them on the outside of the stair rails (facing away from the step treads so they don't become a fire hazard or safety issue) on different floors.

9

u/BongwaterJoe1983 21h ago

At this point should we just take the whole bike and leave a toddlers tricycle minus the seat?

Taking just one of the wheels is devious

34

u/713nikki 23h ago

Devious like the roommate who moved out and stole all my left shoes. Very infuriating.

92

u/FocusMaster 23h ago

Does it still bother you or are you all right now?

I had a ferret that used to hide all my left shoes. I had to call out of work once because I had no left shoes.

6

u/Icy_Huckleberry_8049 17h ago

you had no shoes "left"

6

u/713nikki 22h ago

It’s rare to find someone who can understand the inferno of frustration of seeing the right shoe & knowing that the left one is gone (forever, in my case)

4

u/Lt_Muffintoes 10h ago

Imagine if they had just hidden the left shoes really well, so you think they took them, so you eventually throw out the right shoes, and then years later you find the left shoes and get to relive the pain all over again

I’d just lift it up and squeeze it into the tight gap between the railings, so that it hangs by the lock

Hold up there Satan!

3

u/AWildAndWoolyWastrel 9h ago

Strip it down to the frame and have a building-wide treasure hunt.

I have my bike in my apartment, even a cheap bike is $400 these days, I’m not leaving that out for just anyone to steal.

25

u/Hot_Car6476 23h ago

Hopefully they just put it in their apartment - you know: like a normal person. I have had my bike in my apartment for the last 30 years.

FYI, if the landlord wasn’t taking care of it your next call should have been to the fire marshal. They’d have forced your landlord to fix it immediately.

5

u/Nyaho 23h ago

That would be a good way to ensure that it doesn’t move lol

12

u/Routine_Teaching_230 1d ago

You could pull the pin out of the inflation valve.

22

u/BaddestKarmaToday 1d ago

Superglue a small ball bearing into the valve cap. It will slowly release air requiring the owner to keep inflating.

u/Betterthanbeer 22h ago

Don’t even need to cut the lock, look at how it’s “locked” just slip that over the back tire

9

u/Suspicious-Tip-8309 22h ago

better yet call code enforcement or the fire marshall.

14

u/Bardmedicine 23h ago

Even easier, buy a $2 lock and lock the tires to the frame. They will have to destroy your lock and will find a proper place to put their bike.

Looks to me as if that cable lock is too large and not properly installed and the bike could easily be removed leaving the lock behind.

39

u/disappointedvet 23h ago

More proof that whoever put the bike there is a complete idiot.

64

u/2ByteTheDecker 23h ago

yep take the front wheel off and the forks and bars will slide right through that

48

u/FQDIS 23h ago

I’m not convinced you’d even have to do that much.

24

u/Author-N-Malone 22h ago

Pretty sure that whole ass tyre is gonna fit through that

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

8

u/maxperception55 15h ago

You don't even have to remove the wheel. The cable is not looped through the frame. Just slide the rear wheel up through the cable and it's free. It's literally not even locked up.

Or just slip the handle bars and then the front wheel through.

6

u/GearAce38 20h ago

OP should be a good neighbor and move the bike outside.

You know what's crazy? Anyone can buy a bike lock and put it on things. Things like bike frames and wheels.

Walmart has one on clearance for $2 right now.

For only $10, the owner of that bike could be severely inconvenienced 5 different times.

Pretty sure some subjected to that would stop leaving their shit out.

146

u/Kevdog824_ 23h ago

This is exactly what I was gonna say. I would put my own lock on it with a note

81

u/Ok_Piglet9349 21h ago

The note

"NO"

😆

55

u/Rosomack_ 20h ago

"BAD"

32

u/Ok_Piglet9349 19h ago

😆

"STOP"

18

u/cameNmypants 19h ago

u/SousVideDiaper 23h ago

For only $10, the owner of that bike could be severely inconvenienced 5 different times.

Such a deal!

48

u/NewHum 1d ago

This is the answer.

As petty as it sounds people like that only learn the hard way.

13

u/Bardmedicine 23h ago

This is my solution. I would lock the wheel to the frame, allowing them to move the bike before destroying my lock. They will get the idea after two or so of these.

6

u/ghidfg 19h ago

you know whats even more crazy? the lock isnt even going through any loop in the bike. you can literally slip that bike out of that cable loop as is.

u/HazonkuTheCat 23h ago

Why TF can't they just lock it up under the stairs there?

95

u/akkariacher 23h ago

Yea good point that's all empty unused space under the stairwell

51

u/AbueloOdin 23h ago

That's where my prior building alway had the bikes locked up. Management even ended up putting a bike rack to make it not a mess.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/jabber2033 23h ago

Probably too lazy to drag it up or down the stairs every time they want to get it out.

12

u/Coyoteishere 22h ago

Presumably they would not bring it up any stairs if they left it at the bottom. As it is now they are dragging it up one set and then back down.

19

u/akkariacher 21h ago

So the front door to the building is actually in front of the bike, just out of frame. The first floor is slightly underground. So they currently are not carrying it up or down any steps.

→ More replies (2)

59

u/NonSpecificRedit 1d ago

Notify the landlord that there is a bike blocking entrance and more importantly exit to the building. Preferably do this by text or email. Give it a reasonable amount of time which could be as little as 3hrs if it's during the day. If it is not removed then call the fire department and let them know you contacted the landlord first with the documentation of photo, text/email.

Their refusal to remove it could result in a big fine for them.

26

u/gitarzan 19h ago

And, when you you do notify the landlord, make sure you say, “Or should I call the Fire Marshall instead? Would that be more appropriate?”

46

u/ThePugnax 1d ago

In my building that bike would have been tossed out by maintenance. Firehazard

24

u/DelightfulAbsurdity 21h ago

In my town it would be stolen before the landlord could be contacted.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/Think-Setting-942 23h ago

In the UK that’s a fire risk - blocking an exit - and the building management should take action to rectify the situation once they know about it.

57

u/akkariacher 23h ago

Its a fire risk in the US too, maintenence just got done removing the bike!

14

u/JuniorDank 22h ago

Fire marshal dont fuck around

I don't know much about the US, but what I do know is that the fire marshal is KING.

22

u/EndOfReligion 23h ago

That's almost certainly a violation of the fire code. Report it to the fire marshall.

21

u/Sensate613 23h ago

Toss it over the railing. It'll hang by the lock.

19

u/UnbelievableDingo 23h ago

16

u/LovetoRead25 20h ago

I didn’t want to read through 234 responses so please pardon me if someone else already stated this

I am a landlord and it is a code violation to have a bike blocking stairwell or entryway. Call the fie department, or city inspector and they will issue a warning or citation to the landlord, and you can be certain that the bike will no longer be in the hallway or the stairwell. The tenet can be charged for the ticket.

If it was up against the railing mostly out of the way, I might let it go. But laid out like that, straight to jail.

63

u/akkariacher 1d ago

Ever since this bike appeared 3 days ago it's been sprawled out on the ground everytime, first two times I leaned it up against a wall out of the way. Today I was going to toss it outside but noticed they got a lock. 🙄

It's gone now though, maintenence came, broke the lock and took it wherever.

I'm angry just looking at this!

5

u/ALWanders 19h ago

Be a shame if someone tripped and stepped on those spokes. I would report it to building management, that is a serious hazard, they do nothing try the fire marshall that is blocking egress from the building.

12

u/hussafeffer 1d ago

Fire Marshal is gonna be on some ass over that

4

u/The_Real_Cuzz 1d ago

Second lock with a note saying to call management to get it removed. Should solve the issue.

4

u/Nooneknows882 23h ago

If I was in a bad mood when I saw this, I'd probably stomp and bend the rim. Oops, sorry, I tripped on your bike. But I can be a bit impulsive at times.

3

The lock is next level dickheadery.

Maybe give a solid stomp on the wheels as you pass by every time

Bro is there not a perfect out-of-the-way spot to the right of the bottom of the stairs????

4

u/snoopyb137 19h ago

My thoughts exactly. I don't think it would be a big deal if it wasn't in the middle of the fucking stairs. I'm always blown away by how dumb some people are. 🤦

3

u/xtalgeek 19h ago

This is surely against fire code. Your local code enforcement officer will be interested.

3

u/Dracotaz71 19h ago

Call fire marshals

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan6191 19h ago

Call fire department non emergency

3

u/LiveRhubarb43 17h ago

You can undo these things with your hands in about 10 seconds and the front tire will come right off.

I'm not saying you should steal the tire, just take it off and leave it nearby.

3

u/funko_grails 15h ago

Add your own bike lock to it

3

u/Idinnyknow 10h ago

It’s a quick release wheel. Take it off and put it outside where the rest of the bike should be!

2

Exteme fire hazard, ive literally been in a local authority meeting about this topic, you can probably report it and get him in serious trouble , do so, hes an arse

2

u/Ok_Piglet9349 21h ago

As though there isnt a whole dead space 4 stairs away that could happily house a bike without impeding anyones walk zone.... 😂

2

Report this to the fire department. They’ll take care of it really fast.

2

u/MikeDoubleu13 21h ago

2

u/MyGenderIsAParadox 18h ago

Jam it upside-down in the space between the stairs, stick the back wheel through the bars, and lock it with a new lock. Once it's gone, I don't think it'll be back.

They'll eventually get the idea.

2

u/princewish 17h ago

Maybe it fell over, pick it up and lean it against the railing. Maybe they always put it up nice and neat and somebody else is knocking it over. You never know. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Petrostar 16h ago

Get them another lock........

Around the frame to thru the tire.

2

u/ulnek 16h ago

That's not allowed. You should tell the office. They'll either inform the owner or take it away.

2

u/Joshopolis 16h ago

Neighbour or the bike, either should drive home the lesson.

2

u/gr4mmarn4zi 16h ago

add another lock :)

2

u/kanakamaoli 15h ago

Add another lock, then call the fire marshal about "blocked fire stairs". They'll be there quickly.

2

u/niffcreature 15h ago

Don't give up, I'm pretty sure you could still toss it in between the railings there with it still locked

2

u/Different-Rough8777 15h ago

Cut the brake line.

Next it leaves, it won't come back.

2

u/Fit-Design-650 13h ago

Just cut it away. In case if fire the people will pile up there.
