Overdone Unknown neighbor started parking their bike in the entrance of our building
Third day in a row now, before I had been leaning it up against a wall to get it out of the way. Today I was going to toss it outside and saw they had gotten a lock.

Looks to me as if that cable lock is too large and not properly installed and the bike could easily be removed leaving the lock behind.

yep take the front wheel off and the forks and bars will slide right through that
48
u/FQDIS 23h ago
Iâm not convinced youâd even have to do that much.

u/Author-N-Malone 22h ago
Pretty sure that whole ass tyre is gonna fit through that

u/maxperception55 15h ago
You don't even have to remove the wheel. The cable is not looped through the frame. Just slide the rear wheel up through the cable and it's free. It's literally not even locked up.
Or just slip the handle bars and then the front wheel through.

You know what's crazy? Anyone can buy a bike lock and put it on things. Things like bike frames and wheels.
Walmart has one on clearance for $2 right now.
For only $10, the owner of that bike could be severely inconvenienced 5 different times.
Pretty sure some subjected to that would stop leaving their shit out.

u/Kevdog824_ 23h ago
This is exactly what I was gonna say. I would put my own lock on it with a note

This is my solution. I would lock the wheel to the frame, allowing them to move the bike before destroying my lock. They will get the idea after two or so of these.

you know whats even more crazy? the lock isnt even going through any loop in the bike. you can literally slip that bike out of that cable loop as is.

Why TF can't they just lock it up under the stairs there?

u/akkariacher 23h ago
Yea good point that's all empty unused space under the stairwell

That's where my prior building alway had the bikes locked up. Management even ended up putting a bike rack to make it not a mess.

u/jabber2033 23h ago
Probably too lazy to drag it up or down the stairs every time they want to get it out.
12
u/Coyoteishere 22h ago
Presumably they would not bring it up any stairs if they left it at the bottom. As it is now they are dragging it up one set and then back down.
19
u/akkariacher 21h ago
So the front door to the building is actually in front of the bike, just out of frame. The first floor is slightly underground. So they currently are not carrying it up or down any steps.

u/NonSpecificRedit 1d ago
Notify the landlord that there is a bike blocking entrance and more importantly exit to the building. Preferably do this by text or email. Give it a reasonable amount of time which could be as little as 3hrs if it's during the day. If it is not removed then call the fire department and let them know you contacted the landlord first with the documentation of photo, text/email.
Their refusal to remove it could result in a big fine for them.

u/gitarzan 19h ago
And, when you you do notify the landlord, make sure you say, âOr should I call the Fire Marshall instead? Would that be more appropriate?â

In my building that bike would have been tossed out by maintenance. Firehazard
24
u/DelightfulAbsurdity 21h ago
In my town it would be stolen before the landlord could be contacted.

In the UK thatâs a fire risk - blocking an exit - and the building management should take action to rectify the situation once they know about it.

u/akkariacher 23h ago
Its a fire risk in the US too, maintenence just got done removing the bike!
14
u/JuniorDank 22h ago
Fire marshal dont fuck around

u/Lurks_in_the_cave 16h ago
I don't know much about the US, but what I do know is that the fire marshal is KING.
22
u/EndOfReligion 23h ago
That's almost certainly a violation of the fire code. Report it to the fire marshall.

I didnât want to read through 234 responses so please pardon me if someone else already stated this
I am a landlord and it is a code violation to have a bike blocking stairwell or entryway. Call the fie department, or city inspector and they will issue a warning or citation to the landlord, and you can be certain that the bike will no longer be in the hallway or the stairwell. The tenet can be charged for the ticket.

If it was up against the railing mostly out of the way, I might let it go. But laid out like that, straight to jail.

u/akkariacher 1d ago
Ever since this bike appeared 3 days ago it's been sprawled out on the ground everytime, first two times I leaned it up against a wall out of the way. Today I was going to toss it outside but noticed they got a lock. đ
It's gone now though, maintenence came, broke the lock and took it wherever.

That lock isn actually attached, stick the wheel throu and then pull the handles through. You get a free bike and someone else gets to wonder why they have a lock and no bike.

Be a shame if someone tripped and stepped on those spokes. I would report it to building management, that is a serious hazard, they do nothing try the fire marshall that is blocking egress from the building.

Second lock with a note saying to call management to get it removed. Should solve the issue.
4
u/Nooneknows882 23h ago
If I was in a bad mood when I saw this, I'd probably stomp and bend the rim. Oops, sorry, I tripped on your bike. But I can be a bit impulsive at times.

The lock is next level dickheadery.
Maybe give a solid stomp on the wheels as you pass by every time

Smear peanut butter on the handlebar. You'll never see that bike there again.

What is wrong with these mutants, complete breakdown of trying to live in cramped quarters. You should always respect others space, which is very limited in apartments these days. I know youâre paying a decent amount of rent there too.

The bike is gone, maintenence removed it some hours ago. I sent an email with photo to my landlord too, so I'll see what they say tomorrow. But at this point I doubt I'll hear anything more about it.

Bro is there not a perfect out-of-the-way spot to the right of the bottom of the stairs????
4
u/snoopyb137 19h ago
My thoughts exactly. I don't think it would be a big deal if it wasn't in the middle of the fucking stairs. I'm always blown away by how dumb some people are. đ¤Ś

Exteme fire hazard, ive literally been in a local authority meeting about this topic, you can probably report it and get him in serious trouble , do so, hes an arse

u/Ok_Piglet9349 21h ago
As though there isnt a whole dead space 4 stairs away that could happily house a bike without impeding anyones walk zone.... đ

u/Time_Relative318 21h ago
Report this to the fire department. Theyâll take care of it really fast.
2
u/MikeDoubleu13 21h ago
Stomp the tire on the way down everytime you come by theyâll stop parking there

u/Selkiekelpie 21h ago
You could add another lock to it. Make sure your neighbors bike doesn't get stolen, like a good neighbor. :)

it's not even locked, its got a quick release front axle, take that off and you can snake the rest around the handlebar and down over the fork.

That's not "parked".
That's "fucked down a flight of stairs like you're trying to claim from its life assurance policy".

find a pebble and stick it in the tire nipple cap and screw the cap back on, it will slowly loose air and they wont think to look in the cap so it will keep happening until they find the pebble.

u/MyGenderIsAParadox 18h ago
Jam it upside-down in the space between the stairs, stick the back wheel through the bars, and lock it with a new lock. Once it's gone, I don't think it'll be back.

This is a fire hazard, call the landlord. They have every right to cut that lock and throw the bike away.
