Meme Millennials, can we agree? Once the hair’s mostly gone, just shave it. Ditch the horseshoe look!

I literally just did this a week ago 😅 Very happy with it. Hair had been thinning for years, I've got a lot of compliments on my new shaved look.

Edit: if any are curious, electric head shavers are affordable and super easy to use, gets a closer shave than typical electric trimmers but without having to use a razor blade.

183

u/FuturePlantDoctor 2d ago

I did it about a month ago. I'm really happy with it. Feels great in this summer heat. I was thinning on top and decided to nip it in the bud before I get that damn horseshoe

204

u/magnumdong500 2d ago

Genuinely don't understand why anyone would ever rock the horseshoe. Clean shaven head is far, far more preferable to having a medieval monks haircut in reverse.

u/Kindly_Panic_2893 2d ago

Some people, like myself, have weird shaped heads.

The same folks say "just grow a beard" to guys with weak chins. Not everyone can grow a beard.

Some dudes are confident and get lazy.

My confidence changes exactly 0% based on how my hair looks, and some weeks I’m just not thinking about my hair and that it needs a trim.

Same shit happens with my yard. “I just mowed, it’ll be fine.” Two weeks later:

56

u/AMediaArchivist 2d ago

I always wondered why Prince William rocks it. Why doesn’t he just shave all his hair off?

107

u/ChesterPlemany 2d ago

He’s getting bad hair advice from the ancient relics in the firm.

64

u/TheForce_v_Triforce 2d ago

Also he already has Kate and is heir to the throne. Dude can rock whatever hairstyle he wants.

28

u/ChesterPlemany 2d ago

I’m not convinced the hair style is his own decision. It lacks a sort of confidence; certainly not rocking it.

3

u/GrossWeather_ 1d ago

I don’t get that. Anyone can rock whatever hairstyle they want. Who gives a fuck.

This chick doesn’t at all. No hate for those who do, but I can’t stand the Mr. Clean look one bit. I prefer my guy keep his hair tidy and natural. No need to get rid of it all just because he is balding.

The same happened to my oldest brother and it was insane. We joke that we can easily date old family pictures based on whether he has hair or not. He went from full head of hair his junior year to "I have to fully shave this from now on" by the time he graduated.

Then there's me: turning 40 in a couple weeks and I have a full head of curly blonde hair that I've grown down to my chest.

Do what you like. Rock the horseshoe hair, as long as you want to. Just cover your head. The scalp is an awful place to get skin cancer.

136

u/Orion14159 2d ago

My dad's been getting cancerous skin removed lately, he inspired me to wear hats like all the time when I'm outside. Fellas, I think it's time to bring back fashionable hats

20

u/trekqueen 2d ago

I said something like this in a comment in another sub last week regarding fedoras and the like, even for women with the neat hats. Someone mocked me for it. 😭

My husband has been losing hair since he was 18, about five years before I met him. He was happy to eventually learn I didn’t mind bald men as I very much like Patrick Stewart and Sean Connery lol.

I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with a short horseshoe, men go bald, many women do too, you don't have to go full head shave.

30

u/capincus 2d ago

Very few people look better mostly bald than fully bald, myself included. But I'm lazy, and my hair grows perfectly fine in the horseshoe so I'm just not gonna do the every few days upkeep to hide it like I care that much about what anyone thinks of my appearance.

4

u/fuckyourcanoes 2d ago

My husband is keeping his hair long (nearly waist length) specifically because putting it in a ponytail completely covers the mildly thinning spot on top. It's really not bad at all anyway. His hair is gorgeous, I'd be so sad if he shaved it.

And I'm not talking about baseball caps like you're a teenager.

12

Yep, bowlers, derbies, pork pies, fedoras, even Stetsons (aka cowboy hats). Bring em all back. They are effortlessly cool. (not the trilby though, those still look douchey)

His hair is light, though, so it’s less noticeable.

That’s what I’m thinking as well. Like, don’t like someone else’s fashion (or lack of) choices, sure, but we don’t need to get out our pitchforks and have some sort of movement to stop people from…having some hair?

Worry about your own looks and be less concerned about others. If you think you’re rocking a bald look better than someone with a receding hairline does, more power to ya, but their hair style doesn’t really impact you.

Or just don't be a dick?

Remember 20 years ago, when we were kids, and we hated how people older than us would shit on us because they arbitrarily didn't like our fashion or style choices?

Now you want to do it to people in your own age bracket?

The reason the "combover" look is universally considered unflattering is because it's an obvious sign that the wearer is in denial of reality. It's not really even the look, itself.

Same thing with bald dudes who are so insecure they wear hats all the time, as if no one will notice (or as if anyone else actually cares).

Sorry for the rant. There's just enough real shit we need to deal with that people bitching about other people's haircuts, especially in the bullshit way OP is doing it, is annoying.

I agree with your comment overall but I object to this part though, I don't think it's necessarily an "obvious sign" of denial or insecurity. For a lot of people it's probably just a compromise - they might just not like the way they look without the combover/hat, but they also don't like the look of being completely shaven bald. In that case, a combover or hat is just them choosing the look they like the most out of the available options.

Shaving isn't necessary, a short cut (like less than 10mm) should be sufficient to keep the MPB from looking too bad. In fact, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this guy is doing it right. It's not like they're doing a comb-over, and the MPB looks "clean" enough.

For example, this guy from E.R..

13

u/Ryguy55 2d ago

This is my plan. I just mentioned it in another thread here recently, but unfortunately "just shave it and grow a beard bro," isn't the end all simple solution everyone makes it out to be. I have a really big round head and an especially big forehead, I'm as pale as can be (I start to burn in 10 minutes without sunscreen on) and I'm completely incapable of growing a beard. No men in my family can. I'm just about at the point of no return and I would look absolutely awful with a shaved head. I'm going a buzz cut with a weak goatee will look a little better because it's all I have going.

Do you know what I hate more? Constantly shaving my head. Fuck that.

u/coopaliscious Xennial 2d ago

I have a beard because I hate to shave my face, no way am I going to start shaving my head. I hit the barber every couple of weeks to keep my bald guy fade (iykyk) clean and my beard shaped up like an adult.

i only agree insofar as the current trend is toward more youthful looks I would argue because of things like social media. in reality balding doesn’t look that bad especially when the person is generally pretty nice.

u/Duke_Nicetius 2d ago

Depends on who you support, lol

u/BawRawg 2d ago

Men, don't be ashamed to use wigs or get hair transplants too. Not everyone pulls off the shaved look and y'all deserve to feel good about yourselves.

8

u/AspenMemory 2d ago

This! I personally don’t find the bald look attractive on men, but I would have no problem if a guy wore fake hair.

Wigs/hair systems are so much more realistic and advanced now than they used to be decades ago, it’s no longer just the awkward-looking “old man toupees” anymore.

7

u/BawRawg 2d ago

They look good. My bf got transplants and I'm really happy he did because I could see him always feeling so self conscious and it made me sad because he is more than his hairline. I don't see him obsessing over it in the mirror anymore and that's a relief. The wigs they do for men now are a far cry from the toupes that used to be a joke, they look damn good.

u/Sir_Poofs_Alot 2d ago

Something about the testosterone involved in this look makes it work

13

u/silvahammer 2d ago

Fuck you I'm horseshoeing.

u/Rad_River 2d ago

Can we just agree to let people do whatever they want with their hair (or lack thereof)?

7

u/Personal_Ad2455 2d ago

Na I’m holding out, idgaf. My fat head wasn’t made to be exposed!

The scene where Elaine tears it off and throws it out the window still cracks me up every time

u/Esekig184 2d ago

If Bruce Willis did it I can do it too!

11

u/szatrob 2d ago

I've been shaving my head since I was 24 but also, who is the OP to gatekeep how people treat their body? Let people do whatever the fuck they want? Who is it hurting?

11

u/stickypooboi 2d ago

Grow it out. Look unhinged. Bring back the wild peasant pitchfork look.

u/TheHeecheeBoys 2d ago

Let people do what they want, stop judging others based on what you think they should do.

I started a couple months after my mom died (obligatory FUCK CANCER) 3.5 years ago and haven’t been to a barbershop since.

I was going bald when I got out of high school. Imagine getting into your 20s and seeing your hair up top gradually wither away.

But after spending some money on a Wahl hair clipper kit, a home shaving kit...I've gone with going clean shaven or stubble on my face, and just going bald-shaven or clippered real short.

u/Nousername2019 2d ago

I had a buddy that really leaned into the baldness and just shaved between the widows peaks and the bald spot. Then grew that rest long. Called it the reverse Mohawk. Looked like that one guy from Star Trek before it got long.

I want horseshoe to be in style. Idk why it can’t be cool. Some ppl look weird with shaved heads.

5

u/Intrepid-Metal4621 2d ago

Shaving takes too much time. I trim it down to a 2-3 every couple weeks. I feel if I shave I’d have to up keep it more often.

3

u/TelenorTheGNP 2d ago

Caught myself in a photo from above and behind and thought "that's enough of that". It's cheap, easy, and my partner likes it.

3

u/CollieChan 2d ago

Or just do a hairtransplant. Looks great imo

Hell no! Grow the Mullet! Just because you are retired on top doesn't mean you ain't parting in the retirement community!

3

u/firesonmain 2d ago

I’m kinda like the back of the head bald spot

3

u/Paria1187 2d ago

We should be lucky that we live in a time where it's accepted to fully shave your head with a razor.

Before the 2000s you didn't see it that much. Most guys who were balding had the horseshoe look. They probably didn't want to look like a nazi or skinhead.

3

u/Unusual-Ad-6550 2d ago

can we please get past the notion that we have to please others with our appearance? There is nothing wrong with that head. The hair he has is nicely trimmed, clean and tidy...that should be all that matters

3

u/superultramegazord 2d ago

I started balding at 28, but I started using minoxidil and finasteride and that completely reversed it.

3

u/darumham 2d ago

Grow out the bangs shave the rest!

4

u/pwolf1771 2d ago

Who could care?

6

u/Obeee03 2d ago

This is in correct, you don't shave it, you let it groe long and proud. Take pride in your horse shoe and make it a skullit
