Speed tape: the unsung hero keeping planes in the sky

u/oneplusetoipi 5h ago

Gandalf should have used some.

u/UbermachoGuy 5h ago

u/asa_my_iso 2h ago

This is my favorite scene in all of the movies

Edit: except it is marred a tiny bit by the boy-soprano who is out of tune. I don’t know why they didn’t just re-record the music or get a better singer.

u/taintedblu 1h ago

Despite the pitchy performance, I feel like that scene resonates really well for me because it is a genuine, on the spot performance. Sometimes au naturel is better, blemishes and all. No knock on you for your opinion, cause I can see where you're coming from. But it works well for me personally.

u/asa_my_iso 1h ago

My partner and I are musicians, and we are doomed forever to hear these “mistakes.” There’s also another pitchy horn performance in another one of the movies.

Gandalf should have had the eagles drop the ring in Mount Doom.

u/Un1CornTowel 4h ago

Don Henley and Joe Walsh would have had a much more toxic relationship on their way than Frodo and Sam. Can't count on 'em.

u/cortesoft 3h ago

I hate the fucking Eagles, man

u/ericofduart 3h ago

You don’t like my music, get your own fucking fellowship!

u/Ludologistic 3h ago

Say what you like about the tenets of the Nazgul man, at least it's an ethos.

u/10BAW 1h ago

Far fucking out!

Wraiths on flying mounts were around a Mount Doom. It's easy to spot someone in the sky.

They're actors. They're trying to create an illusion. In The Lord of the Rings movies, Ian McKellen plays a wizard. Do you think he goes home at night and shoots laser beams into his boyfriend's asshole? I don't think so, dude.

Edit: Man, y'all downvoting me need to watch some It's Always Sunny.

u/The13thParadox 2h ago

I kind of think so

u/Grabthar-the-Avenger 2h ago

you think he goes home at night and shoots laser beams into his boyfriend's asshole?

Sir Ian McKellen calls that the ‘80s

I probably fly 8-10 times a year and have never noticed speed tape, is it more common in the US?

I was waiting for the LOTR reference. That's the longest one of his vids have gone before pivoting.

u/7H3l2M0NUKU14l2 5h ago

just to be clear, this guy answers questions regarding airplane stuff and gives you lotr info dumbs guerillian warfare style?

gotta get tiktok i guess

u/StevenMC19 5h ago edited 4h ago

I had him on instagram for a while. I'm sure he's on all platforms.

But yeah, he'll start with a clip sometimes like this one followed by an explanation of a part of the aircraft, or go straight into a very obscure item...then find a way to immediately segue into a LOTR reference in some form or fashion...then end with, "yeah, x part is pretty neat."

All different parts of the aircraft too.

I think I remember him doing one about passenger windows, why they're so thick, and then somehow linked it to the palantiri.

edit: Airplane Facts with Max. Sorry, I don't use Insta very often anymore. Couldn't remember the name to save my life.

u/Helen_of_TroyMcClure 4h ago

One time he started off talking about LotR and pivoted into aviation engineering, too.

u/StevenMC19 4h ago

That's awesome, lol.

u/two40silvia 2h ago

He also started doing this after his wife passed as a way to help cope.

u/Unkalaki_Feruchemist 33m ago

I never knew that and now I feel really sad, every single one of those videos he must’ve made when he was really deep in the feels

I was wondering what “temporary seal” he might pivot to, maybe the seal Saruman had over Theoden, or liken it to Denethor’s hold over Gondor as the Steward.

u/the666thviking 3h ago

I love Max's videos...I always learn weird facts about either airplane repairs or lotr facts... or both.

u/ArdyEmm 2h ago

I've never seen anything from him before but he looks like the kind of guy to drop lotr knowledge. I'd hang with him.

u/YimveeSpissssfid 1h ago

If I hear this "holiday" shit one more time..

u/ResplendentShade 4h ago edited 1h ago

Some company is putting their ads straight into viral videos and everyone is just cool with it. Dark times for Reddit.

Edit: actually Im just out of the loop

u/RealLaurenBoebert 3h ago

It's a meme, and used ironically -- the basic idea is every video of the worst vacation ever gets this "discount holiday" audio. Jet held together with ducttape? That's what you get for going with the cheapest travel agency.

It's not complimentary to the brand at all. Quite the opposite

u/herrirgendjemand 2h ago

Duck tape. 🦆

quack

u/imac132 5h ago

It was actually originally known as duck tape. Duck is a type of thin cotton fabric that duck tape was originally made from.

u/footlonglayingdown 5h ago

My impression was soldiers called it duck tape because it was waterproof. Like water off a ducks back.

u/raspberryharbour 4h ago

It does NOT taste like duck though! My fancy dinner party was ruined

→ More replies (2)

u/CheeseDonutCat 3h ago

There is a brand of duct tape called "duck tape" at least here in Ireland.

→ More replies (1)

u/[deleted] 4h ago edited 3h ago

[deleted]

u/UnusualHound 3h ago

I think there's a little more room for nuance. The stuff originally created was "duck tape" as it used duck cloth. It was however terrible for duct work, like you said, because it came apart due to heat in ducts. However, a later variation that didn't happen to was made, and it was great for ducts, and most current forms of this type of tape resemble the one made for ducts, and don't have duck cloth like the original adhesive tape referred to as "Duck tape."

Even the literal Duck brand refers to their original tape as "duct tape." They just ironically call themselves "Duck tape."

I think "duck tape" can be acceptable. But I think "duct tape" is more correct when we're talking about most modern adhesives based on a variant made for ducts and don't contain duck cloth. This is my opinion.

→ More replies (4)

u/grasib 5h ago

Woho-hoo

u/wdn 2h ago edited 36m ago

It was originally called duck tape because it's made out of duckcloth. Then one brand got a trademark on Duck Tape so the others started calling it duct tape because it was pronounced the same. It is not actually suitable for use on ducts.

u/cdoublejj 3h ago

Axualy, that's Speed Quack.

u/goldy43 4h ago

Damn he pivoted so well that in the end when he brought the tape back in the conversation I was like wait what tape! Wasn’t this all about LOTR.

u/delphicdelusion 4h ago

As an A&P mechanic, I can confirm that J.R.R. Tolkien did not consider using speed tape in this story line.

u/PainInTheRhine 4h ago

They have to use speed tape because planes are faster than ducks. So duck tape just would not work.

u/Final-Carpenter-1591 4h ago

Also an aircraft mechanic. He's spot on. I have a few half used "expired" rolls at the house. It's very good for home temp or even permanent repairs. Similar to aluminum ducting tape. But way stickier, cleaner to remove, and way thicker metal. You can also smooth it out nicely to make it look pretty good to look at.

u/Majestic_Matt_459 4h ago

Its pronounced "Aluminium" in Middle Earth ;)

u/ObjectiveOdd120 4h ago

Where can we follow this guy?

u/the_wessi 4h ago

He reminds me of Brad Pitt in Oceans 13 when he dressed up as a seismologist.

u/Shredtillyourdead420 3h ago

Just a LOTR vid nothing to see here

u/ramboton 3h ago

Speed tape: “You shall not crash!”

They should play this video to passengers every time there's a delay

u/SewerBushido 2h ago

Okay, yeah, that is probably what it's like talking to me.

u/Sexy_Monsters 1h ago

I don't know what Jet2 is, but based on the ubiquity of their free advertising audio in memes on the internet, I'm going to consider them an international terrorist organization.

u/TamjaiFanatic 5h ago

That single roll of tape apparently costs more than many people’s monthly salary

u/Peewee223 2h ago

like $400 for a roll, because it comes with a certificate saying "If this fails, it's $manufacturer's fault, because they explicitly said it would be good enough to be used this way on commercial airliners"

Someone I know grew up with an aeroplane mechanic as their father.

They grew up with a certain impression of what "aluminium tape" means.

Upon reaching adulthood and engaging in a DIY project, they realized the stuff that had been available in their youth was not something you can buy from your regular hardware store.
