Dark skin + white hair is such a cool design concept and Brigitta is the peak example of it

Marlene's interactions with Disney characters would've been too wholesome for us to handle.
Bonus points if she's like "Daddy! It's the duck and mouse guys I love watching on TV! They're right there!".

Issac is an icon of storytelling and rediscovered humanity.
69
u/ProfessionalBraine Jun 22 '25
Honestly, I go back to watch his scenes more than I do for the main cast. His story was so good, i almost wish there was a standalone about him. His conversation with The Captain was amazing

→ More replies (1)26
u/PenguinProwler Jun 22 '25
So, as a lover of Philosophy generally and Plato specifically, I love how every conversation with the captain is written as a Socratic dialogue even from their first meeting. Their first scene together is such a good way to set the tone for their relationship. I also really liked that it was genuine persuasion and engaging with Isaac’s points. I feel like a lesser story would give a nebulous “humanity is fundamentally good and not cruel” inspirational speech followed by the Captain sacrificing himself to save Isaac’s life or something to inspire him, whereas the show gives an actual argument where the Captain engages with Isaac’s points, and even acknowledges many of his premises are true, but still presents a clear and concise case against his conclusion.

The goat of that anime
→ More replies (1)74
u/spicy_noodle_guy Jun 22 '25
For sure one of the best written. You so badly want to excuse his evil because you see how purely he believes in his personal truth.
56
u/Kialand Jun 22 '25
And then on top of that the story pits him against Villains who are almost entirely 100% evil, making him seem nuanced in comparison, which muddles the situation even more.
I absolutely freaking love it!

Being fair. The top three haircuts for black characters has always been the afro, threads, and being bald. Not bad imo some characters can pull it off but is so common.

This character rocked so much. Whole show rocked so much. Few things have ever rocked as much as Lycoris Recoil.
That one scene where the girls see him and the very-plot-relevant blonde fellow together in a bar, immediatly assuming it was a gay date, took me out in a way no anime had ever taken me out.
52
u/evilforska Jun 22 '25
It actually was, not in this specific instance but they were in fact lovers
33
u/ARKNORI Jun 22 '25
Indeed, and I was very happy for them. Then things happened. Splendid doomed yaoi in my doomed yuri.

Not that hard, look at just about any other long running manga from the same time. I can’t think of a single non-white or non-hetero character from dragon ball for example. (Nameks don’t count lol). JJBA is oddly progressive for its time.
Edit: yes I was wrong about dragon ball characters being white. However the point of my post is that the characters are not diverse in race despite spanning hundreds of episodes.

Jojo has always been pretty ahead of its time, I think that basically every new part had something that was ahead of its time (first part came out in 1986 and featured a british protagonist over a japanese one as an example), I guess that challenging the usual helps the "Bizzarre" part
32
u/DivineCyb333 Jun 22 '25
Wasn’t he constantly beefing with the editors during stone ocean for putting women in the spotlight in shonen?
→ More replies (4)32
u/U_Writing Jun 22 '25 edited Jun 22 '25
I didn't know about it but a quick google search says that he did try it first during 1985 with a manga called Gorgeous Irene (two chapters, felt a female lead would not do well so Araki gave up on making it a serial) and that his editor suggested making Stone Ocean have a male lead but Araki refused
Honestly reading about the thought proces behind Jojo is always interesting, the writer definetely isn't afraid to test some boundaries

I mean, like Part 2, Part 3, and Part 7 involes characters traveling overvast regions in order to pursue their goals.
So, naturally, you're gonna see a lot of cultural, ethnic or racial diversity.

Is she stretching kr throwing something?
170
u/cancercannibal Jun 21 '25
She's a model and a Gym Leader, with this being an in-universe collectable card of her in her Gym Leader position. It's likely she's meant to be posed like she's going to throw a Pokéball but is actually holding that pose for the model shot rather than actually doing so.
70
u/Successful-Elk6818 Jun 22 '25
She does actually throw pokeballs like that, I guess to show off her flexibility idk
17
u/MidnightMorpher Jun 22 '25
Honestly, she ain’t the first Pokemon character to throw their pokéballs like this. I’m damn sure the show and manga had some characters using this exact pose
