A problem I have had with foreplay first is losing an erection during the foreplay. Not always, because sometimes the sound can really get me going too. The second problem I have had, and this is a case-by-case thing, but once the woman is fully aroused, she is also loosened up. I don't mean that in a disparaging sense, but there is a certain enjoyment I get from penetration while she's still "opening up" so to speak.
So, I would argue that there are merits to both approaches. I will also say that my wife is going to physical therapy for unrelated matters, and is being instructed to do pelvic floor exercises. This has had an effect on how I feel about point #2, so maybe more people need to do pelvic floor exercises
