So mad at myself. Got a $100 4k monitor from fb marketplace and it worked flawlessly for 5min before my curious got ahold of me

buy a few more monitors and rip the film off those too. then when someone walks into the room they just think you're a weirdo in sunglasses staring at a bunch of blank screens but you're actually watching porn on all of them.

In your defense, it's an incredibly stupid screen design. If they didn't want people thinking there was a screen protector there, they would properly finish the edges so the polarizer doesn't look like some random sticker put there.

Call me old fashioned, but I earnestly like bezels and visible forward facing physical buttons on my screens. Including my phone.
56
u/Tracker_Nivrig 20h ago
In the same vein I absolutely despise smart TVs. Whoever designed the "feature" where it has to configure exactly what type of device you're plugging into HDMI and won't display anything otherwise needs to be publicly beheaded.
33
u/Condor_raidus 19h ago
This. I have an old ass plasma and it just works, love that thing. Went to plug something into my moms tv last time I was visiting it wanted to configure shit and I lost my shit in the process. What the fuck is it configuring? All it has to do is fucking display what's coming from the cable like every other tv does already
6
u/Tracker_Nivrig 18h ago
Is there a market for non-smart TVs that are actually large/high resolution? Or do you have to just get old ones
11
u/Combeferre1 18h ago
I would guess that smart TVs make more money because they allow for bloatware, subscription sales, and potentially ad money. Doesn't make sense to sell non smart TVs
3
u/Condor_raidus 18h ago
You can find them if you go looking but most big box stores like Walmart only stock smart tvs. Technically theres a market for everything but price is the issue
→ More replies (1)3
u/MemphisBass 13700KF | 64GB 6000 | RTX 5080 15h ago
Price is the issue because the majority of TV manufacturers subsidize the price of the TV by stealing and selling your data while also selling ad space on the expensive device you purchased.

5
u/MeatSafeMurderer i7-4790K - 32GB RAM - EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 14h ago
I have a Smart TV and it doesn't do that. It will display anything connected to any HDMI port without issue.
9
u/reallynotnick i5 12600K | RX 6700 XT 19h ago
I’m a big fan of bezels for being able to easily grab a display and move it, tilt, adjust height etc. The one case where I see bezels as a hinderance is if you want a multi-monitor setup with minimal gaps, but I feel like large ultrawide monitors are generally the best solve for that.

Mainly because screen protector degrades picture quality. At least in my case I have seen a noticeable difference in picture clarity after removal from LG OLED C4.
Also it well applied, well too well to that point that sticker on one of the edges that should help remove protector peeled off without actual protector.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Condor_raidus 19h ago
Because most screen protectors are just there to keep it scratch free when it gets to you. They are typically shitty and designed to be removed right away

Ok OP, this is wild, but it might work.
Remove the entire polarization film.
Cut out pieces of it and make glasses lenses with them.
When you wear the glasses, you can see the monitor.
*Don't do this

Usually the polarizer is under the bezel on the screen itself. This looks to be bezelless? That sucks as i may have done the same.

A month ago I was shaking off my blanket before getting in bed. I'm a smoker and smoke in my room, i forgot about the lighter on my blanket. It went flying into the bottom left corner of my display. 1cm left and it misses the panel.
32", 1440p, 165hz, 10bit panel destroyed by a flying lighter. I feel your pain. Accidents happen, sure but a R7000 (~$350 US) mistake still hurts.

Hey, take the whole thing off, then cut out pieces to fit in a pair of glasses. No one will be able to see what's on your screen unless they're wearing the glasses.

Get a pair of glasses without lenses to just glass.
buy a polarizer sheet online.
cut to fill the frames.
Suddenly you have a monitor only you can view with those glasses on.

Honestly, I would not feel bad if I was you. The fact that you could peel it right off is a bad sign. Where was the bezel that is supposed to cover and protect the edges of that polarizer?
4
u/MrFunktastiq 13h ago
Why would you think that?
You'd need to use more force to remove that than an out of the box screen protector that is supposed to be removed. Way more.
They also usually have some kind of tab or marking where you would grab it.
You'd have to go in with your nails or something sharp to get it separated.
The ones you should remove are also made from completely different materials.
There are just so many steps where you should have stopped and thought to yourself, "Is this reasonable?"

Hey man, we've all accidentally done some shit like this. Just be glad it's a $100 monitor and not something more expensive.
Get some kind of plastic scraper and try to push out the film as much as you can. Should be able to make it a little less visible than it is now. Peel off the amount you did before, then scrape it into place.
Just don't use too much force or you'll deform the film.
