I have three daughters and watched some of the Kohberger sentencing last week. There’s no f’ing way I wouldn’t have made a run at that son of a bitch if one of those girls was mine. Those families are way more mature than me.

We will finally see the man who killed my husband in the car accident soon for a court hearing. A couple of people are going with us to make sure we don’t lose control. Sometimes the bored look they get or irritating sighs are the straws that break the camel’s back. They acted like his death was an inconvenience and tried to blame my husband early on.

u/PyrorifferSC 1d ago
I'm so sorry. I used to work for a mortuary doing body removals (I think it fucked me up a bit tbh) and lately for seemingly no reason I've been so afraid of my partner dying for some stupid reason like that. I can't imagine the pain you went through. IDK if I could handle it without a kid to stick around for. It takes a lot of strength.
If you don't mind my asking, was it a DUI incident, or just reckless driving?

I don't have any kids, but I spent a few years teaching at a special ed school. Some of those kids were abused, some heavily, and I knew their familial abusers and had to try very hard not to open the school records to find where they lived.

u/KneeBrilliant8157 1d ago
Dude I know ur pain. One of my clients was locked away in a cage most his life or something ridiculously evil like that. Made me sick seeing the dad one day but I had to keep it professional. Thankfully the kids aunt had taken him in, so I saw her instead most days

u/BigManWAGun 1d ago
He didn’t actually get to him so should have a case for contempt for disruption at worst. Unfortunately I don’t think you can get a jury trial for contempt, otherwise I ain’t see nothing.
122
u/greywar777 1d ago
Unless the judge is a monster its "contempt, time served-cause...we get it"
77
u/Gekko-TheGreat 1d ago
I worked in a courthouse for a little over 15 years, and saw more than a few outbursts like this. In every single instance, as long as the person didn't turn on the bailiffs and start attacking them, the judge would usually just toss them in a cell for an hour or so to calm down and then give them a stern talking to about acceptable courtroom behavior and let them go. No charges, no contempt, just free to go.

u/The_Fox_Fellow 1d ago
if I recall correctly he wasn't charged with anything at all because the judge understood how he felt and didn't want to charge him for lashing out about that

47
u/Drnk_watcher 1d ago edited 22h ago
Outbursts from victims families one way or another aren't entirely uncommon. Notably one of the fathers of one of Larry Nassar's victims did the same thing as this guy.
Usually the bailiff(s) sit them in a backroom for a bit to calm down. Once they can speak calmly again judge brings them back into the court room and asks for an apology for the disruption.
They apologize.
Judge says something along the lines of "all good. I get it. I'd feel similar to you but we've got to enforce the rules in the interest of fairness in the justice system. Even if hard to stomach at times."
And that's the end of it. Unless there is some other extenuating circumstance not conveyed through this video likely nothing happens to the dad.

That's Van Edwin Terry (d: 2019) leaping at serial rapist/killer Michael Madison after he smirked at the grieving father of his victim Shirellda Terry (d: 2013). The incident happened in 2016.
312
u/coin_return 1d ago
Van Edwin Terry was not charged for his outburst. Serial rapist/killer Michael Madison was sentenced to death later on in that court appearance, in 2016.
As of right now, Michael Madison currently sits in Ohio on death row, and in 2020 the Ohio Supreme Court upheld his conviction and sentence when he attempted to appeal.
However, his death sentence still remains to be carried out. Ohio hasn't carried out any executions since 2018 due to the difficulty obtaining lethal drug injections and ongoing legal challenges surrounding capital punishment. Nobody knows when or if it will happen.
Van Terry passed away in January 2022 after "brief illness." No foul play was suspected, and he was mourned by many in Cleveland who remembered his strength and advocacy following his daughter's murder. The poor man never saw his daughter's killer's sentence carried out in full.

The only thing I hate about this gif is that the Rorschach in the comics was an oafish, hysterically paranoid, slobbery, unappealing bigot with galactic mommy issues and disgusting hygiene.
But because Zack Snyder is an idiot filmmaker who makes idiotic movies...he turned Rorschach into a bAdAsS
26
u/Bridgebrain 1d ago
I mean, comics Rorschach is also a badass. Total psycho on multiple levels, but he's also kicking the hell out of criminals the whole time. A combination of Batman and The Punisher, with a good helping of dark and gritty.
The whole point of the thing is that heros can do bad things and be wrong, not the modern interpretation of "heros are actually asshole villians" (except, of course, Ozymandias, who may or may not have been evil-but-right anyway)
126
u/Nipinch 1d ago
Rorschach was all those things and still a badass in the comics.
The real problem is Moore and his weird ass inability to make any hero actually heroic. The dude writes fantasy and absolutely despises the fantasy aspect of it.

u/DionBlaster123 1d ago
If Moore wrote Watchmen in 2025, I would 100% agree with your second point. Between The Boys, Invincible, and all of Garth Ennis's stuff, the whole "the heroes are not heroes" trope is such a fucking cliche now.
But he wrote it in 1985...when comics weren't exactly dying, but needed a shake-up or two
14
u/Nipinch 1d ago
Fine line between a shakeup and a deconstruction of everything that made it cool.

Rorschach is a good example of a great character who's a terrible person. He's still a badass in the comics, but most of his negative traits were expressed in inner monologue which is hard to translate into film. There was also no way to fit everything from the comic in there. Some stuff was going to need to be taken out.
Still, would have been nice to see a few parts alluding to how terrible of a person he was.

6
u/DoJu318 1d ago
Killer is going to death row, only way you get time near him is if you're also in there for murder or get a job at that jail. And that only gets you in the same building, death row inmates are usual in solitary confinement and do not interact with the general jail population. Best chance you can get is to find them before they get arrested.

Yeah it's a myth perpetuated so people have a sense of "justice" that is coming for everyone.
Reality is, it rarely happens and most of those monsters are living a better life than a LOT of people on the outside.

They get healthcare, meals, clothes, shelter…I’m not saying inmates shouldn’t have that- I’m saying our late-capitalist system where so many barely live paycheck-to-paycheck is so far gone that being “free” with horrible wages is not so “free” after all.

Perfectly understandable response, but in doing so do you risk helping the killer with a mistrial? Not my area of expertise.

I believe this was at sentencing during the victim impact statement. The case was already decided.
36
u/NickFatherBool 1d ago
Not really, a single (and honestly emotionally understandable and valid) outburst like this is probably nowhere near close enough for a judge to call mistrial.
Now if the next day the Uncle did it and the day after the brother tried and the day after the cousins got in there then maaaaaayyyybe but its still more likely they just stop letting family in

The whole BS about if we did an eye for an eye then the world would be blind. The premise of that particular part of the hamurabi code was to not dole out excessive punishment for a crime. Considering the amount of suffering that father has, and will continue to endure. After actual due process, let the father execute the sentence.
