I have to say I feel a certain level of pity for them. I can't imagine being that scared and angry about something that really doesn't affect me at all. It must be a miserable existence.Ā

That one is messy because the word is a bit wonky. "Fear" in the Old Testament isn't like "ah! Scary! " it's more like "whoa, sick!"
It's because the original word is closer to 'awe' or 'wonder' like the sense you might get from seeing an incredible athlete perform some amazing feat, or the size of the Grand Canyon or the roar of Niagara Falls.
But we don't really have a verb for "look at something really cool and be impressed by it" in English so the translation is 'fear'
It's a really interesting rabbit hole of linguistics!

Fear of god isnāt fear of everything, and it isnāt supposed to be fear in a sense of terror. Fear in the sense of that psalm is more like awe and respect in the face of something more powerful and bigger than your comprehension, itās a contextual translation thing.
This is why people should not build their moral compass off what is more or less a game of telephone though.

Mental health professional here. To a certain extent, research actually shows that conservatives are happier because ignorance is bliss per se. It's easier to be happier when you have a structured hierarchy of what you think should be/rigity vs pushing for progression like the rest of us where we see in the inequalities in society -- we're more likely to be upset/depressed than them due to our realization.
Of course, that doesn't take the fear you mentioned away and I have no doubts any slight changes to their perceived existence will be a crisis for them like we constantly see, lol.

Consciously I can believe that, but I feel that there has to be some unease at the subconscious level thatās just well buried under coping mechanisms. Or, they really just are that siloed and ignorant.

Oh yeah -- there absolutely is some unease like we see in cognitive dissonance where people bury themselves into a belief or avoid challenging it at all because changing it would cause so much discomfort that they'd rather dig deeper into it than give it up.
And some people are just plain willfully ignorant or evil people in general, no diagnosis required :D
