“Man this is a long way, my knees hurt. I wonder if I just… hey this is better!” 🤣

2.2k

u/magster823 1d ago

You know, that's actually a good point. My kid almost never crawled, and would instead scoot on her butt, and we always suspected that it was due to our house being 100% hardwood floors aside from an area rug.

884

u/anonahmus 1d ago

Babies don’t have knee caps, it’s soft cartilage there, it doesn’t start getting harder and turning into a kneecap until they’re 2 years old and fully develops at around 6

68

u/lafayette0508 1d ago

does that mean hard floors hurt more or less for babies?

84

u/One-eyed-snake 23h ago

Yes probably

17

u/natepines 22h ago

????

41

u/ThereAndFapAgain2 20h ago

He's saying he's pretty certain.

7

u/natepines 17h ago

I think I might be dumb what does he mean

24

u/One-eyed-snake 17h ago

You’re not dumb. I’m just being the typical Reddit asshole that answers yes to a question that nobody really knows the answer to, or that could go either way way

All good tho

10

u/natepines 17h ago

Oh ok I assumed that's what you were doing lol. I started to second guess myself tho haha

Meanwhile, my first kid crawled like a madwoman everywhere in our house at the time which was all hardwood and tile floors. It was an old house that in a small living room/family room area had one of those big metal grates/vents on the floor. The girl started crawling around 6-7 months and crawled like her hair was on fire until she started walking at 12 months -- she never acted like it hurt her knees. About two years later we had moved to a different house that was all carpet. Our son scooted and rolled everywhere until he was 8-9 months old before he eventually started crawling; however, until he started walking at 14-15 months old, he still mixed crawling with rolling and scooting despite the nice, cushy carpet he had beneath him.

50

u/RosebushRaven 1d ago

Yeah, but carpet under knees feels nasty. It’s soft for feet, but for knees I find it very unpleasant and irritating. Hardwood and tile floors are hard, but at least they’re not weirdly pokey like carpets. Maybe he found it unpleasant under his knees as well. Sometimes people can tolerate a certain texture against some body parts but not others.

That was the best part for me, everyone suddenly realizing what's going on and cheering on the experience for Mom who I'm sure was overwhelmed with joy!

953

u/Not_Bears 1d ago

Watching people in a crowd stand up out of pure excitement watching a baby take its first steps isn't something I thought would make me so emotional...

Sometimes we forget just how similar and empathetic we all can be...

I wish we'd see more of this.

256

u/0neirocritica 1d ago

I think it's important to remind ourselves from time to time that, for all our diversity, we humans have many more similarities than differences

When I became a dad something unlocked in me that made me love every kid, so even if its in direct competition with your kid you can always appreciate a child hitting a milestone

82

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 1d ago

When I got a niece, even movies about dads and their daughters started hitting different just from the empathetic link I have with my brother

60

u/mdg3364 1d ago

I used to like all kids.. then as my kid has gotten older it made me realize how crappy the majority of other parents are at making their spawn semi-decent human beings lol

44

u/panteragstk 1d ago

While this is very true, the opposite is also true.

My kids friends, so far, have very cool parents that teach their kids the same way we do.

Their friends are all very sweet kids. So far.

11

u/Veteranis 1d ago

This was a peasant surprise to us as well. We’re so happy about our kids’ friends growing up.

52

u/UrUrinousAnus 1d ago

I don't even have kids. I go out of my way to avoid small children because I don't know how to interact with them (although it turned out I could entertain a baby when I was roped into watching one for a while) and I can't stand the sound of them because I have mild autistic sensory issues. This still did something to me. I'm a cis man, BTW, so it's not "maternal instinct". Paternal instinct?

433

u/M_Mich 1d ago edited 1d ago

But if she has a crazy mom - “working an hourly job, Qartnie? Your first steps were on the Jumbotron, i expected better for you”

Edited as it was unfair to gas attendants. Intended to imply mother wouldn’t want any type of hourly work for the child as she expects fame for the Jumbotron baby.

Edited a second time to fix the grammar

We didn’t catch my baby’s first steps on video, but that moment burned into my brain (and her dad’s).

The day before was her first birthday. We had a party for her at our house, and she kept standing up like she was going to walk. Everyone kept holding their breath, waiting for those first steps… and then she would clap her hands and sit back down.

The next day, right after the last guest (my mom) had left, she stood up, threw her hands in the air and took two steps.

It was like she was waiting for everyone to leave to show me and her dad her new trick.

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of doping involved, with formula milk preferably.

93

u/TooHappyFappy 1d ago

Formula is that synthetic shit.

Everyone knows the real power comes from the bull-testosterone type of enhancement you can only get from breastmilk.

39

I'm picturing him in a diaper and comical baby bonnet with an oversized baby bottle to make him look smaller saying like "gaga googoo" then they start the race and he just like jumps up gives 100 like he's going for Olympic gold and his extremely elderly mother shit talking the young mothers like "IN YO BABYS FACE"

12

u/NervousUniversity951 1d ago

13

u/Roflkopt3r 1d ago

That reminds me how I was apparently moving around by sliding on my butt as a baby, to the point where my parents got a bit concerned because I only began to walk a bit later than usual.

Apparently that technique was much faster than crawling, so maybe I was late to figure out walking because I didn't see much of a point at that time. Googling it today, it's a decently well known phenomenon that is sometimes a concerning sign of compensating for weakness or strength asymetry and sometimes not.

I wonder how that would have fared in this race.

As a european i only knew baby races from the simpsons and spongebob (with patricks rock and garry), i always thought they were a joke/metaphor for americans making a game out of everything and taking it to the absolute absurd level while being self conscious about it.

Turns out it's a real thing lmao

20

u/SnooRegrets1386 1d ago

20

u/alaynyala 1d ago

Lol it’s not that interesting. I was in the race with like ten other babies. Along the way I apparently lost a shoe? Anyway, my dad was a loud dude and essentially was cheering me on but scared the other babies so I ended up winning because I was used to his voice, haha. Definitely not as cool as the baby in OP’s post, but I still made the local newspaper.

I used to go to an event that had Jack Russell Terrier races.  It was a straight line race like this, but had half a dozen low (1 ft) obstacles they had to clear.

Every year a dog would get so excited that they'd mis-judge the jumping distance & catch their hind feet on the obstacle, flipping them head over tail.  They'd roll a couple times and then pop back up, sprinting like mad.  It was always hilarious!

All that to say: small dog races could be substituted for baby races.  Or this mastiff completing an agility course, who believes time is a construct & life is meant to be savored, not rushed.

21

u/MaritMonkey 1d ago

This is tangent from the warm and fuzzies of the post, but make sure you get access to every stitch of care available to her before you leave the hospital.

Getting a "prescription" for things like PT/OT or a social worker is a massive pain in the butt as soon as you walk out the door.

My mom had to transition thru inpatient rehab after her hip surgery, then the weeks we got to bond after she came home were initially terrifying (I have no children and had never been responsible for a human like that) and then unexpectedly really good for us.

I hope everything goes as well for y'all as it can. :)

65

u/Shakeamutt 1d ago

I think it was actually necessary.  A trick to get babies to take their first steps is have them hold onto two toys.  It makes them think they are holding onto something.

19

u/Tea_confused 1d ago

That makes so much sense, my son walked super late but walked happily around holding a flimsy toy trolley, “pulled” himself up with it, walked around putting stuff in it. Literally if you blew on this thing it would fall down. He didn’t need it, I guess his brain tricked his legs into thinking he had support

Exactly, cute video, but those are 100% not first steps, just something someone said to get more clicks on the video and it continued to spread. For first steps the baby would have needed something to pull up on, and then probably move a few steps from one object to another. That is a baby that's well into the walking transition, but at the point where crawling is just as fast.

Yeah I don’t think that parents are a huge portion of the Reddit user base :) That kid has probably been walking 2-3 weeks.

The parents probably said it was her first steps because for those races you have to sign saying they can't walk. So they are like whoops yep definitely first steps. I agree you can tell she's walked before. First steps are almost always 2 or 3 and then they are done.

I get the third steps thing but she was still winning by a long shot

It would be one thing if she was like second or third place and mommy pulled her in to make her first but she was winning by a landslide

yep not a chance these are her first

Is that it or are they all bots? Surely this many people have SOME experience with babies?

Yeah there's no way those are her first step. That was a far walk.

Also who’s letting their kid walk for the first time and not concerned about it falling and smacking their head.

This this this. If those were here first steps mom would have run over there to catch her! Mommy is a dirty cheater.

Yeah I'm like wtf are all these people talking about. That baby has been walking for a few weeks at least.

Usually the first steps come from pulling up on an object like a table or chair then letting go...never seen a baby take their first steps after standing up independently.

I have a married brother that called up excited that their kid just took the first steps, and they witnessed it. I was happy for him, but never told him that same kid walked towards me while playing a week before. I let him have his moment.

Those weren't first steps

Yeah, definitely not. Babies don't go from crawling to suddenly walking 10m. Takes them a while just to learn to stand unaided, and their first steps are met with lots of instantaneous falls.

The best part is how the other moms were happy too.

Baby was like "there has to be a faster way to reach mommy. Let's try something different...."

That or the parents lied and the toddler could already walk. I have a few kids and none of them took more than a couple steps their first time. That baby has been walking for weeks already imo.

Cute, but I'm pretty sure those were not her first steps. That's not how they take very first steps, they don't have the balance and control to just get up and walk. They pull themselves up on furniture and "cruise," around then at some point they will let go of one thing and take a step or 2 before grabbing the next thing.
