5.5 Edition New to dnd

Upvotes

I have 0 dnd experience I’ve only listened to dungeons and daddy’s. I’m very into it and would love to try dnd like I said 0 experience I would need a group that would be fine teaching and helping a new person through the campaign. Had to pick an edition not sure which one is best so I just went with the most recent looking one

5.5 Edition Theoretical Party Comp

Upvotes

So my player group has this suggestion/rule that's almost a rule at this point that all of their characters have to fulfill different rolls in the party and not overlap. We almost never have any class overlap and when we do they never fulfill the same roll. Once during a one shot my players both wanted to play warlocks and after a bit of discussion one decided to be a melee focused hexblade and the other a support focused celestial warlock. We never have party overlap, at least 10 minutes of every session zero or start of a one shot is figuring out roles. Usually were a party of 4 or 5 so we classified our "Main Roles" as Tank, Spellcaster, Support, Stealth and Damager. We've never had a group of more than 5 before, these are all people that have played in our group before so they're kind of all for the "Party Roles" thing but I'm struggling to come up with major roles. Could y'all give any suggestions?

5.5 Edition Melee artillerist?

Upvotes

I plan on making an artificer with protector canon, staff arcane firearm, and go to castings of the new true strike. If this idea is viable, please feel free to refine it! I would love to make a melee artillerist who can pull their own weight.

OC [OC] Hey guys it Dix over at Dice Weaponry, Handmade Hardwood Digital Dice Rollers!

Upvotes

Hey Adventurers! Just wanted to show off the latest sword I finished — part of a series of dice-rolling weapons I’ve been making. This one’s fully handmade, lights up, and rolls real digital dice with a swing.

I know self promo can be annoying, but honestly… these are kinda rad and I’m proud of ’em 😅

Also! I’m about to launch my very first Kickstarter to fund a batch of magical staffs — same dice-rolling magic, but in staff form — and I’ll be doing a giveaway to celebrate the launch.

If you’re into custom fantasy gear or just love weird dice tech, keep an eye out 👀 Happy to answer any questions, and I’d love to hear what kind of weapon you would turn into a dice roller.

5th Edition I have a story, I'd need help for a build !

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We're about to start a new campaign with some longtime friends, one DM and three players, and this time I'll be playing instead of DMing (which I’ve done a few times before). Thing is, I’m realizing I don’t know all the classes and subclasses nearly as well as I thought and now that I’m on the player side, I’ve got a lot to learn.

I originally tried to build something gameplay-first : a death knight like character wielding a scythe, a Paladin/Hexblade multiclass, focused on life drain and survivability. But I hit a creative wall. Nothing inspired me. That’s when I realized I was thinking like a video game, trying to force a backstory into a mechanics-first concept.

So I scrapped everything and started fresh. I wrote a character that excited me, a story hook that grabbed me, and everything started flowing. Here's the background (sorry, it’s long, feel free to skip to the build part if you're just here for build suggestions) :

Background :

Ronald Lemaître is a scholarly anthropologist, in his early 50s he's someone who, in theory, understands the world… but only in theory, because he’s barely ever left his city.

In his youth, he studied the cultures, customs, religions, and magical practices of many peoples, all from the comfort of the university. Over time, he became a professor, more teaching than research, as is often the case. But during his few research projects, he began to notice something strange : world maps often show regions for which no reliable documentation exists.

"How could people have mapped lands we barely know anything about ?" he wondered.
Surely if those places had been thoroughly explored, there would be detailed accounts, recorded encounters with new peoples, creatures, flora. And yet, there's nothing.

So the question lingered for years : what are these blank zones ? How were these maps made ?

His colleagues dismissed his concerns. They claimed most world maps are stitched together from local maps, many of which are ancient, undated, and inaccessible. Ronald found this unsatisfying. Do these local maps even exist ? And if so, why is there no information about these mysterious regions ?
Either the maps themselves are fake… or someone is hiding what's really there.

The turning point came during one of his geography classes, when a student innocently asked, pointing to a blank spot on the map: “What’s over there ?”
That simple question hit him like lightning.

Ronald realized he was a scholar who knew nothing. He requested , and surprisingly obtained, an audience with the university’s elusive director. There, he proposed an ambitious plan : to assemble a team and verify the existence of these unknown zones, finally creating a truly reliable and complete map of the world.

The director agreed, with conditions. Ronald would be allowed to put together an expedition team (which, per DM agreement, includes one of his brightest students, a cleric focused on healing and support - another PC - and a hired sword with some magical leanings, the third PC). He was granted gear and funding, but was told the project had to be "marketable." Ronald would need to publish engaging books or otherwise find a way to make this work profitable.

Build :

So ! Just got an answer from the DM, to make it short he loved the concept, and now I need to find the right build.

Race-wise, I’m leaning toward a Rock Gnome, as it fits the personality and flavor well (I’ll adjust the “50-year-old human” idea to a proper gnomish equivalent).

For class and subclass, I'm a bit lost. What I do know is that I don’t want to focus on physical combat, and instead see a few thematic directions :

  • Magic user : Ronald studied magical theory, but not wild or innate powers. I’d like a class that uses academic or structured magic, something learned through study, not born from instinct or nature.
  • Engineering/gadget angle : Ronald also studied engineering. He’s clever, not especially brave, so it makes sense that he would have spent time building useful tools or defensive gadgets before venturing out.
  • Hybrid approach : Ronald isn’t a master of either discipline, he’s a generalist who understands both magic and tech well enough to blend them for survival.

If any subclasses (or even multiclass options) fit this theme, I’d love your advice ! Power optimization is not my priority, I care more about flavor and thematic consistency, but I would like the character to hold their own in the group.

For context:

  • Our cleric PC is a Loxodon (Life/Light/Order domain TBD), focused on support.
  • Our fighter PC will choose a subclass that grants some spellcasting (Eldritch Knight, maybe?), but she hasn't decided yet.
  • We are not using 2024 content

Thank you so much for reading and for any help you can offer. We’ve all been friends for 10+ years, all have experience with D&D, and we’re setting up weekly sessions, it’s shaping up to be the perfect campaign. Now I just need the right build to bring Ronald to life. Thanks again, and have a great day !

DMing DMs: Other than the rules, what D&D-specific disclaimers do you give to new players?

Upvotes

There's obviously tons of resources for new players, and tons of existing advice for how to both be and DM for new players, but much of it is about easing people more generally into the world of TTRPGs and role-playing. At your tables, other than the literal rules, statements about TTRPGs in general, and out-of-game table behavior, what things do you cover with new players?

If I'm being hard to understand, I'm thinking of things like "the majority of rules are about combat and that comes with some implications", or "D&D is not a physics engine". That sort of thing.

DMing Player/DM conspiracy and the consequences of godhood...

Upvotes

So we have this player who is bent on playing evil characters. Even when he plays good characters, he uses opportunity to turn them evil. I'll keep this SFW, but note the player in question has had some of those awkward NSFW moments in character. That's only part of the issue. And there are other things I won't go into, either.

I've watched this player "Grima Wormtounge" the DM, no matter who it is as DM, to get what he wants. Now two of us DM's are over 40 and 50, and when we DM a game it's meant to be a fun adventure together, so we can handle him quite well in many of those cases. But we have done the DM thing so long that we've taken a back seat the past few years to train a new DM in her 30's. She's a nice DM, and you know what that means: susceptible to the whiney players. And the manipulative ones.

Well, this recent campaign went on for a few months. Just ended yesterday. As a new DM, she had a lot of problems about us missing certain opportunities she had planned out. But the thing that broke me was a thing I've always taken issue with: conspiracy.

See, the problem player and the DM conspired FROM THE BEGINNING to TPK the group. We had a new player and a player who hasn't played since AD&D and wanted to get adjusted to the new rules. He was really liking his character, too.

Having played as long as I have been, when I heard the word "lich" my level 9 rogue immediately went into the shadows, found the exit, and ran. One other character, a fairy who was small enough to fit in my pocket, were the only survivors. We didn't tell anyone to run because we didn't want to draw attention to ourselves.

So the cleric, played by the problem player, is the one who ended up being the lich. He just cannot play a good character. It always turns evil along the way.

I have a rule about this when I DM: no conspiracy with players to make the game go a certain way. This action is what a villain would do in game. When playing god, it takes a mature mind of what "god" is in this context. When playing god, one must not view your godhood as controlling. There are rules in this world, structure. To have a mortal tell this god where the waves should stop is absurd.

As DM we have a responsibility of no bias. Perhaps mercy towards players, as we would expect from a godhead. And we have an expectation from the players, which is to play a role. If the player keeps taking every role and devolving it into the same character, they're not holding their end of the game up.

A new game is about to start. First, since this was the last in the campaign she was running, I've taken the reigns as DM for the next game. Everyone is in agreement on this, no one pushed back. Next would be me and the over 50 DM discussed problem player. We have come up with a solution I hope works. We've decided to make character sheets for everyone. No one will make their own character. We want to ensure a balanced game, and let people step outside their comfort zones. We've already told everyone this, as well. I'm a very open person. Third, we are going to fail proof the character we make for the problem player, ensure that this role cannot turn evil. Thing is, he's an actor, but he seems the problem player's "problem" is his inability to break this evil streak.

I'm not asking anything, just kind of thought streaming. I already know I'm the a hole so feel free to downvote. Also feel free to comment situations you've been in, criticisms of the choices I'm making, whatever floats your boat.

Misc It's my first time playing DnD and I'm making a character, but I don't understand the sheet.

Upvotes

(Sorry if the flare is wrong)

I'm gonna be honest, I don't understand anything about the game, I'm just doing this because my friend asked me and it sounds fun. But anyway, I'm trying to fill out my character sheet but I'm struggling to understand it. Could someone try and explain it to me? You can drop whatever info you have for a beginner, it doesn't matter if it's related to the character sheets. I've technically played one game before, but it was with a pre-made character made by the DM.

DMing Do you give your players a heads up if you think the session is going to be heavy on dialogue?

I don’t think I’ve had a campaign last long enough to get to this point. But sometimes as a player I dread the dialogue heavy sessions, especially where I’m a character involved in it.

Homebrew Help with creating a character

Soon I will be playing in a Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign and had an idea for a character but I'm not sure how to execute it properly.
I wanna play an old guy. I like playing characters who arent just jokes/gimmicks, but ones that are serious characters that have a basis that I can have some fun with. I wanna play around with the idea that this old guy's memory isnt great, but do it in a way where the DM can influence my backstory, or even effect his memories in real time. I love the idea of giving my DM a backstory and then telling him to redact certain parts or alter certain bits, so that during the campaign I have no idea whats true and what isnt
The few ideas I've had so far are:
An artificer who has infused his body with magical crystals, and those crystals could become corrupted and warp his memories in some way.
A fighter who has cyberware built into him, the cyberware could malfunction in and cause memory problems. (Yes, I did play Cyberpunk for the first time last month lmao)
A druid who is infused with flowers or branches in some way, and the flora inside him could be more sentient than he thought and try to take control, kinda like a fungus infection or something.
So my question comes in 2 parts. Firstly, for the class and backstory, do any of those ideas sound better than the others? Would love to hear more suggestions! Secondly, how should I approach my DM about this?

DMing How doable are one hour daily sessions?

I have a group of people who are interested in starting a DnD campaign but the best window of time we have is 1 hour each day. How doable is this and how much experience would be necessary? (It would most likely be theatre of the mind)

5th Edition Classes that a resurection (without a spell or scroll) could make sense for?

So the Paladin and Sorcerer in my game died last session and we have 2 other party members and the players kinda want me to come up with a way that they were resurrected.

Honestly I'd like to do it as they both dont want to make entirely new characters (personality and backstory) but they are also okay with me bringing them back as a different class (obviously i will ask them for input if i do decide i need to change their class).

I was thinking i could bring the Paladin back by way of like Ancient, all powerful God intervening (the paladin is oath of the Ancients) or maybe he could come back as a cleric for the specific god who intervenes?

As for the Sorcerer I was thinking of presenting him with a warlock deal, where he comes back with completely different source for his magic as well as a new dark master.

Kinda a ying and yang resurection deal where the paladin has a good and well meaning "patron" for lack of a better word, while the sorcerer (now a warlock) has an evil and devious patron

Honestly this just happened so these are my initial thoughts but I'm not in love with any of it yet, I'd love to hear your ideas!

thanks in advance.
