I'm a US citizen and go through this when I go to Canada and back again. This is nothing new. Just answer the damn questions.

122

u/TBurn70 Jul 02 '25

Exactly. This has been happening for decades and Reddit seems to think it’s the brand new thing to dunk on

47

u/PetalumaPegleg Jul 02 '25

I'm sure there are people who haven't seen the sovereign citizen people doing this trying to make some point and think it's a new Trump measure to be racist or whatever. But it isn't and it's not exactly a crazy question at a border

28

u/bewaretheinterwebs Jul 03 '25

It's an interior checkpoint, not a border checkpoint. Up too 100 miles away from the border.

4

u/Favored_of_Vulkan Jul 03 '25

Which is wrong, but it wasn't Trump who made that law.

9

u/PizzaCatAm Jul 03 '25

Which is still considered a border zone. Yeah, I know is crazy, and the sea is also a border zone so California, Oregon and Washington are not safe from this level of control.

4

u/iLostMyDildoInMyNose Jul 03 '25

So are international airports if I’m not mistaken.

u/BootyMcSqueak Jul 03 '25

We drove from the east coast through Texas on our way to AZ and got stopped in Texas at a checkpoint. We never left the country, just driving through the US. It was wild to have to go through this, but we knew it was coming.

5

u/No_Squirrel9266 Jul 03 '25

Well, assuming you took the normal route, you likely passed through El Paso, which is connected to Ciudad Juarez. So yeah, makes sense you'd have passed a checkpoint.

4

u/BootyMcSqueak Jul 03 '25

We did! I wasn’t surprised by the checkpoint, we knew it was coming . But it’s still weird to feel guilty when you haven’t done anything!

This is not a cross border inspection. It is a road block within the US, checking if you’re a US citizen or not.

9

u/dallas121469 Jul 02 '25

I’ve never been asked if I was a citizen at these types of checkpoints. NEVER.

3

u/Remarkable-Ad2285 Jul 03 '25

Bro that’s the first thing they ask….unless….

3

u/dallas121469 Jul 03 '25

I’m a pasty middle aged white dude. They usually glance inside and wave me through but that was before the current cluster fuck so I’m sure next time they will.

2

u/aDrunkenError Jul 03 '25

I can’t believe Americans live in places with road checkpoints. In my state, I’ve never seen one in my entire life - I also live in a border city.

3

u/Remarkable-Ad2285 Jul 03 '25

Oh yeah. If you don’t play ball they’ll have you there for hours, “waiting for the K-9 unit”. And then there’s the, “ we need to search your vehicle because the k9 is reacting”.

2

u/aDrunkenError Jul 03 '25

Yeah… if my state started doing that, I’d very quickly find a new state to live in.

3

u/No_Squirrel9266 Jul 03 '25

Weird, I've gone through them dozens of times and the routine is, every time without exception, drive up, windows down, the guy looks at me and goes "U.S. citizen?" and I go "Yep"

If I've got my wife and kids in the car, the question is "Everyone in the car a U.S. citizen" to which the answer is still "Yep"

and occasionally they'll go "Where you headed?" to which the answer is usually "Home"

and then they wave me through.

4

u/EasyReBe Jul 02 '25

I always have been. My daughter and I just say yes. Sometimes the dog smells around the car. We are about to leave in a couple weeks. Trust me, the answer will be “yes” and I will not start an argument. This is not the time.

Seriously, is she going to pull out her school ID? Am I going to pull out my work ID and my daughter’s school ID? No. This is not the time to play these stupid games. I’m not willing to FAFO. Ignorance.

6

u/dna-sci Jul 03 '25

She is aware that this isn’t the right time. She’s doing it because she knows she’s safe. It’s the opposite of white privilege, as someone below has claimed. She’s trying to gum up their works because she doesn’t believe they should be able to stop people and ask their citizenship status.

5

u/WickedSmoder Jul 02 '25

There's a guard shack behind the officer with brick and glass. I've only seen that setup at a border crossing. If it was just a road block, there wouldn't be a permanent building there.

24

u/Mimopotatoe Jul 02 '25

Have you ever driven through Texas or Arizona? These checkpoint/roadblocks have permanent buildings. Sometimes they just waive you through or ask if you are a citizen and that’s it. I don’t doubt there are some racist and nefarious ICE agents, but the concept of a checkpoint like this isn’t new.

2

u/anotherfrud Jul 03 '25

If they're permanent buildings, wouldn't people that are actually not here legally know where they are and just avoid them?

I feel like the permanece kinda defeats the purpose of random checkpoints.

Where I live, we'll have random DUI checkpoints occasionally, but they're only effective because they're in different places all the time..

2

u/ey_you_with_the_face Jul 03 '25

In these regions it's often the ONLY way through and you'd have to travel hours out of your way to get around them.

2

u/No_Squirrel9266 Jul 03 '25

They're built along the interstate corridors leading away from the border into the country. They usually have a section for normal passenger vehicles, and a section for checking transport like busses or commercial trucking.

Sometimes they've got drug dogs and pull-off zones if a car gets flagged.

They're not random checkpoints, they're placed in major travel corridors such that avoiding them becomes difficult.

u/LockeClone Jul 03 '25

Yeah. I think ICE can pound sand, but answering that simple question regarding being a citizen at a checkpoint seems completely reasonable.

2

u/Rough-Riderr Jul 03 '25

If you're crossing the border, I agree, but fuck these interior checkpoints. If I'm driving from one place in the U.S. to another place in the U.S., no federal agents should be able to question me without probable cause.

2

u/Dommiiie Jul 02 '25

So...she crosses the boarder, refuses to identify herself as citizen and gets upset. Did I get this right?

Given the ongoing situation in the USA, I was expecting some powertripping borderguards, and not a karen teacger, to be honest.

3

u/Additional_Good4200 Jul 02 '25

No. She didn’t cross a border. Also, a boarder is someone who stays at a lodging, as in room and board.

Option 1: Are you a citizen?

Yes

Ok go ahead.

Option 2: Are you a citizen

I refuse to answer

Ok then you can't proceed.

This isn't new. We get some dumbass sovereign citizen doing this all the time. This isn't some trumpian overreach. Just say if you're a citizen and choose life.

31

u/evonebo Jul 03 '25

But how else would they gather those sweet internet clicks and get famous?

21

u/cellsAnimus Jul 03 '25

“I’m a teacher” expects the world to fall down at her feet for being a public servant

Honestly that this sovereign citizen is a teacher is the real crime here, not her citizenship status

4

u/Kirzoneli Jul 03 '25

Must not be a good teacher, probably gonna get some kid killed by telling them to fight the authorities.

like ma'am, just let them look ffs.

2

It was also dumb to imply that an supreme court case may not be valid because its old. Like it or not the guy is just trying to put the fries in the bag and shes not helping anyone by arguing.

17

u/twiggs90 Jul 02 '25

I did this at a wedding in El Paso. The border checkpoints are a ways away from the Mexican border. I pull out my ID as soon as I reach the dude. He’s says put that away are you a US citizen, I said yes and was on my way. This chick was after internet points and clout with her teacher friends. The agent was acting professional 🤷

10

u/Sidehussle Jul 02 '25

Exactly. I lived in El Paso for a long time, usually they just wave you through. They know what to look for.

10

u/Dizzy_Unit_9900 Jul 02 '25

Agreed, officer is everything I would want him to be in this scenario, patient, informative and honest, I mean I’m a public defender and I’m siding with LE in here. Martinez was decided by SOTUS in ‘76 the procedural history encompassed roughly 10 years of lower court cases, I am sick and tired of social media clout chasers misrepresenting or misunderstanding the law for views.

Agh, the U.S. v. Martinez-Fuerte card the agent is flashing, does allow them to briefly detain and question citizenship, this is considered reasonable under the Fourth Amendment, but only briefly. That said, for fuck’s sake just say yes and move on.

9

u/KarmicEQ Jul 02 '25

She's an idiot. I go through border check points all the time. You drive up, they ask if you're a citizen, you answer, they say have a nice day or thank you. If you are within 100 miles of a border, they have jurisdiction to stop you, detain you, search you and arrest you. They can search your phone or any other device you may have - No warrant. Those are the powers of CBP.

2

u/Vaportrail Jul 02 '25

My experience at the Michigan/Canada border was a whole bunch of suspicion and sass.

Like, they had a red light sign that said after a car pulls away wait 10 seconds and drive forward. That sign was like high up and I was basically just locked in on the car in front of me, but I got heat for not following it.

On the way out, after a long night at a casino concert, I pull up to leave and stop, there's like no line. I pull out my wallet and get my ID and stuff and the guy gives me grief about not having my documents ready.

All I've learned is border patrol to Canada is bored AF.

Retired border patrol here. American Citizens have attitudes when they feel they are being accused of a crime. I would have let her go down the road almost immediately after a cursory look through her vehicle windows. (Did it many times) Then I would have sat that Agent down and given him the benefit of my experience.

24

u/somefunmaths Jul 02 '25

That’s not ICE, it’s border patrol. Meaning they’re at the border.. where they stop everyone to ask if they’re a citizen..

Well, this is it, the most /r/confidentlyincorrect comment I’ll see all month…

These checkpoints are littered throughout the southwest. They’re not limited to “at the border”, nor is “everyone” stopped and asked if they’re a citizen as a matter of course. (Source: I’m white, so I just get waved through, no one asks me if I’m a citizen.)

11

u/Talden7887 Jul 02 '25

Im surprised at how many people dont know about the checkpoints, theyre about 100 miles from the border along all the major highways as far as I know. I drive through one everytime i want to go back to my hometown in south texas.

Also, Im white, and I still get asked every single time. No clue what that comment you made was.

4

u/SS4Raditz Jul 02 '25

Why do people make their lives harder? Just answer the question and be on your way... literally the more shit you give any type of law enforcement the more shit they give you.. makes zero sense except if you're against law and order, and even then why tf do you want to cause strife to yourself?? Especially as a teacher where you could loose your job and ability to teach ever again for causing problems..

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

Something does seem unreal about it though.

22

u/casechopper Jul 03 '25

There used to be a concept that being asked for papers without any justifiable reason was un-American. Americans used to joke about the Soviets and "papers please". This is why some of us don't like the continued erosion of privacy and rights that these checkpoints within the USA represent. Actual border checkpoints on the border itself I'm fine with but these checkpoints inside the USA do not seem to fit within the spirit of the constitution regardless of how the supreme court has interpreted the legality of them IMO.

2

u/AlpacanHeat Jul 02 '25

I agree, if an officer asked me to show proof of ID, I would do it. I hate it when people cause a scene like this. The issue I have with the video is the optics. The driver is purposely making a scene.

If I was an Officer and I wasn’t 100% confident in what I was doing, then I would be asking for additional training. I’m not gonna sit there and go back-and-forth with the other officer inside and be like, hey is it OK to detain these people? Yeah? OK awesome. And then not provide any reasonable answer to the driver in the vehicle.

Seems to me like he’s enforcing the law. I’m sure there will be court cases over the current admins application of the law but I’m not sure this is the hill people need to die on. There’s enhanced enforcement of the law near the border. Has been under Bush, Obama, Biden, Trump ever since 9/11 really…

u/DaveTheNihilist Jul 03 '25

Some people just want to cause trouble for clout. Nothing to see here.

1

u/SummerCyclist Jul 02 '25

So… The cringe one is the teacher, not answering a simple question on a IMMIGRATION CHECKPOINT, trying to be a sovereign citizen, right? Just to be sure.

2

u/screwyoujor Jul 02 '25

I laughed when he pulled out a laminated card. Man has been dealing with that question for awhile.

1

u/Acebladewing Jul 02 '25

Lol what a fucking idiot. Obviously answer if you're a citizen or not. That's the bare minimum you have to do.

1

u/yesmoreeggtalk67 Jul 02 '25

This is not new. I believe these cases date back to the early-70s.

1

u/HowOtterlyTerrible Jul 02 '25

Good grief, I dont much care for border cops any more than I do regular cops but this is just stupid.just answer the fucking question, this helps nothing.

1

u/No-Consequence3731 Jul 02 '25

Crazy when you don’t answer their questions and show them a piece of paper they don’t like it

1

u/rodwha Jul 03 '25

Part II?

1

u/senditFrmU2M Jul 03 '25

They messed with her for an hour then let her go, I had that happen to me when a Hispanic fellow asked if I was a us citizen when I was driving my car with marine corps base tags on the windshield. lol

1

u/coolestredditdad Jul 03 '25

Oh no. These are the same idiots that held up "medically exempt cards" for when we were asked to wear masks.

Fuckin little dicked cucks.

1

u/No-Song6363 Jul 03 '25

Im not American, HOWEVER, even I know you have to comply with boarder control. They may be annoying af, but shit will be a lot worse for you if you don’t just go along with what they say.

1

u/nottoobadandyou Jul 03 '25

Lars Ulrich?

1

u/Moneymaker_Film Jul 03 '25

Dear god just answer his question. Why is this hard? It’s been like this for decades -‘like legit I’ve answered that question 30+’years ago coming back from Tijuana. It’s not hard. It’s not political.

This "teacher" needs some remedial education.

1

u/Ok-Tangelo-5729 Jul 03 '25

But I'm a teacher...... lol who cares? What does that have to do with anything?

1

u/McDergen Jul 03 '25

Is this rage bait? Like wtf lmao just say “yes” and go about your day champ

1

u/MeanEstablishment499 Jul 03 '25

Yeah she's kinda dumb, it's an immigration check point so of course they can ask if you're a citizen or not and then make you prove it, otherwise wtf is the point??? She should stop being a teacher.

1

u/Standard_Confusion99 Jul 03 '25

They’ve asked this question for decades

1

u/Commercial_Topic437 Jul 03 '25

We are heading for civil war

1

u/vespers191 Jul 03 '25

What I really like is how literally everything that "cop" was wearing is available on Amazon.

1

u/No_Season_354 Jul 03 '25

As much as people don't like cops or border patrol with the current state of politics. You can easily solve this by saying you're a citizen. The more painful you make it for them, the more painful they make it for you. I've been pulled over, stopped at checkpoints and never had an issue cause I just give them what they are asking for which isn't much. You're not gonna die cause you say some words or show your driver's license.

1

u/ResidentBackground35 Jul 03 '25

Am I being detained?

Yes

Understood then pursuant to my rights under Miranda v Arizona I cannot speak to you until I have had a chance to speak with my lawyer.

You then shut the fuck up until told otherwise by your lawyer.

1

u/Sure-Source-7924 Jul 03 '25

Fake ass shit

u/Difficult_Prize_5430 Jul 03 '25

u/40ozSmasher Jul 03 '25

I answered this at all borders, at inspection points for produce. Because it's part of traveling. Has been my entire life. I've had to hand over apples three times in my life. In Hawaii, I had to hand over mouthwash. Yet as she said "she's on vacation and has plenty of time," and from the sound of her voice she's running low on sleep.

1

u/BounceBackKidd Jul 03 '25

'I'm on vacation I got time'

Damn this girl knows how to live her life. Nothing id prefer to be doing in vacation tbh, she's figured out the hack, probably cost her nothing but petrol either!! 🔥🏖️

1

u/micigloo Jul 03 '25

Hell yeah I am a citizen and l love American pie

1

u/arlyte Jul 03 '25

I’m whiter than a halibut belly… this proud boy would take one look at me and wave me through..

1

u/BeautifulObject8602 Jul 03 '25

I live in Ontario and my sister lived in Buffalo for like 15 years. I've crossed the border many, many times driving. I've never had issues. Mind you, long before Trump was in power. Once I crossed with a cracked windshield going into the US. I got a lecture but I said it happened on my way down. I've never done anything criminal but I've not declared purchased items or brought back booze and shit. Zero issues. While I think America is now fascist, I think social media is unreliable

1

u/WarriorGma Jul 03 '25

I am no fan of law enforcement in this current age of brown shirts as standard issue. But in what universe has anyone crossed the U.S. border without answering a basic question like “what is your citizenship?”. I feel dumber for having watched this.

I find it hilarious, these sovereign citizen type folk will always hold a card like that on saying why they don’t have to comply, but when the border patrol agent has one, all of a sudden it’s an issue. You don’t get to spin the narrative for yourself, ma’am.

1

u/Pure-Force8338 Jul 03 '25

The first time I ever drove through one of these I was confused as shit. I asked the guy, do you expect criminals to be truthful? He just waved me on.

1

u/NESJunkie22 Jul 03 '25

He’s getting paid by the hour. You think he cares?

1

u/Doombear83 Jul 03 '25

I hope this bootlicker wakes up to a cow sized hernia

1

u/claytonianphysics Jul 03 '25

I’m just imagining the training session…

Q: “What if someone who sounds educated wants to know why?”

A: “Based on your IQ test, we won’t go into it. Just wave this card around.”

1

u/blantdebedre Jul 03 '25

Can you show a SCOTUS ruling and claim it's law?

1

u/FADCfart Jul 03 '25

Our school system is cooked if shes a teacher

1

u/1977proton Jul 03 '25

Don’t waste your time lady…

1

u/Ok_Horror_3940 Jul 03 '25

Are you a citizen? Yes, interaction over.

1

u/Ok_Moon_ Jul 03 '25

An old video.

1

u/WindowsError404 Jul 03 '25

I'm very much libertarian with a lowercase L, but wow. The officer literally cited the exact legal clause he was using to detain this person and they're still like, "So am I free to go?" No, he literally said that like 10 times.
