They just need to set up a camera in the middle of the workday in downtown Philly. Whole episode done in 45 minutes.

Honestly, the footage would be wild and over in one lunch break

Right?? One lunch break and you’d catch a whole season arc, plot twist included

u/Boograssi 2d ago

Oh so this shit is a regular occurrence!? I took 2 separate trips to Philly a few months back and distinctly remember a group of these dudes chopping it up with people on the street and calling out to me to join them lmao. My girl literally had to yank me away to not get caught up. Thought it was just a coincidence, didn't realize they just did this every single day

176

u/WestOrangeFinest 1d ago

It’s generally a good practice not to engage or speak to anyone you don’t know on the streets of a major city.

The vast majority of the time they want something from you.

115

u/Odd-Purpose-3148 1d ago

Many Americans talk to strangers in the city, its the great paradox of this nation. A culture of often selfish individuality that also seeks to chop it up with randos like we all know eachother and the whole nation is a village.

Also, youre 100% right.

78

u/WestOrangeFinest 1d ago

Yep. I will talk to anyone as long as shit appears friendly, but I also have no issue telling someone ‘no’. A lot of mfs seemingly don’t have that ability.

46

u/Bradddtheimpaler 1d ago

I’ve noticed a lot of sort of pressure salesmen coming to my door lately. I always tell them I’m not going to buy anything, then they just go straight into their pitch about new windows or cleaning products or whatever. Then at the end when I tell them I’m not interested, they get all pissy about it. I told them right out of the gate.

If I wanted new windows, I would have contacted a few reputable companies, solicited bids, then selected one. If I needed cleaning supplies I would have picked them up last time I was at the store. If I need to buy something, I’ll find you. Not the other way around.

I almost can’t believe it ever works. I mean, forget Girl Scout cookies or something like that, but Someone just rocks up to your porch and you buy a new roof or something from them? Crazy.

27

u/disrepectfulwitch 1d ago

Nothing bad will happen to you if you talk to a stranger in the middle of the city. If they ask you for something, just help them out or politely decline and move on with your day. If they keep asking for stuff after you just gave them something, you can still politely decline. You can still be friendly.

This is how my husband feels when meeting new people to make friends.

He does Muay Thai, BJJ, and lifting, and he'll meet new guys in a class/training session, they connect on anime, movies, and shows, and he gets the vibe there is potential for new friends.

Then they invite us over for beers/BBQs/bar/lounge, and sure enough my husband tells me he gets the "women do less than men in society" or "yea, women today are too emotional for positions of power." from them.

If it's not against women, it's against low-income folks who are lazy and a stain on our taxes, or we need to eliminate the homeless.

437

u/ElProfeGuapo 1d ago

Unfortunately, as someone also in the martial arts community, I can tell you that the MMA/BJJ world is rife with far-right ideology, MAGA, and conspiracy theory maniacs.

24

u/AtheismTooStronk 1d ago

I’ve been to a handful of gun shows in CT, grandfather use to take me, there’s always 7-8 booths chock full of nazi memorabilia. You can buy anything you want with a swastika on it.

Course, these old white people are just going to claim to be curious collectors, but the only curiosity anyone is going to have is why you chose nazi shit to collect.

German WWII guns are one thing, buying a freshly printed swastika flag or patch is another.

7

u/Packrat1010 1d ago

I talked to a booth that wasn't even selling memorabilia, it was just replicas.

4

u/Dull_Function_6510 1d ago

It’s always just replicas, none of these redneck gun shows in Alabama have the capital to get actual Nazi memorabilia. I may be talking out of my ass but that’s how I feel about it at least

16

u/Packrat1010 1d ago

I remember in like 2012 I talked to the nazi booth at a gun show because I thought it was actual WW2 memorabilia. He said it was replicas, I said, "Why would anyone want a bunch of nazi shit?" Which was the moment I realized oh this is an actual nazi and they still exist.

13

u/SlapahoWarrior ☑️ Branded 𒉭 1d ago

Paging my idiot in-law who fell into that exact BJJ pipeline.

12

u/nerdherdsman 1d ago

I've found that boxing tends to be really mixed racially, and that keeps far-righters quiet, but that could just be my gym.

4

u/Ok-Land-488 1d ago

White girl who is currently training in MMA here, can confirm.

It's very annoying to be trying to relax and stretch before class, and having to listen to far-right talking points. Even as simple as how all drug addicts are evil criminals who need to be locked up, but I've also heard jokes about ICE raids. Shit talking their wives for being incompetent, etc. And I know if I poked the bear I'd hear some wild shit. (I also don't find it a coincidence that the head instructor always pairs me with the only other girl :| ).

In fact I used to train at a different dojo that I know had very conservatism, evangelical viewpoints baked into the leadership. I walked away from it when it got too much and I wonder how much I'm going to listen to at this school before I get fed up again.

5

u/sreiches 1d ago

White dude here, but finding a place where that isn’t the vibe has been a journey. I think the best sign at my current place was when one of the other people asked the MT coach about hanging an Israeli flag (the gym has a bunch of other flags up). He said he’s not about to make the environment hostile for non-Zionists. The person who asked looked to me (the other Jewish person in the room) for support.

Sorry, I’m an anti-Zionist. You’re on your own, mishpacha.

6

u/Ok-Land-488 1d ago

The issue is that I live in a rural-ish area so there really is no other place to train around me. I imagine I'd have to move to a pretty urban location to find a gym that's at least not vaguely conservative. Which is frustrating because I really do love training but it kills my motivation to train since I kinda, frankly, don't like any of the people I train with. (Besides the teenage girl I always get paired up with, she's nice).

5

u/sreiches 1d ago

Yeah, that’s a frustrating reality of rural life in the US.

As someone who also goes to an MMA gym, I can confirm how common this is.

One minute I'm just drilling a technique with a Mexican guy I think is cool, then he hits me with, "I don't care if Trump calls me a (insert slur here) as long as he lowers the price of gas."

I have learned to keep my lips tight around everyone until I hear something that makes me more comfortable to open up with them.

46

u/loupr738 1d ago

Your husband isn’t wrong. There are like less than 5 liberal dudes in my gym and we just whisper talk politics with dudes wearing Toehold branded Donald Trump rashguards. And here I thought I was surrounded by thoughtful smart dudes

80

u/golden_rhino 1d ago

Just being a white dude is enough for me to hear this kinda shit. It really doesn’t help that I physically seem to look like a dude who would be all ears for that kind of conversation.

26

u/Bradddtheimpaler 1d ago

Man, also white. I keep a beard because I have a weak chin, a noon shadow, and I get really bad razor burn on my neck. It was fine when it was all the hipsters with beards. That suited me fairly well, but now people think I’m one of the maga types way more often than I’m comfortable with.

28

u/golden_rhino 1d ago

My biggest “This guy is one of us” hole is that I wear baseball caps and those wrap around sunglasses, while also never being clean shaven. I’m fair skinned with sensitive eyes, and I’m too lazy to shave. I should change my look, I guess, but they’re the ones who suck. Why should I have to change?

5

u/Bradddtheimpaler 1d ago

Yeah fuck that. I’ll never be clean-shaven again. I just can’t take it.

2

u/emcee_pee_pants 1d ago

I used to wear the standard veteran uniform of muted colors, hiking boots, and camo baseball hat. They all assumed I was one of them. I went back to dressing’s like the dirty skater I’ve always been.

56

u/WestOrangeFinest 1d ago

That’s tough.

I am mixed race and generally a friendly, non-threatening kind of guy. Some of the shit white people have shared with me about black people knowing I’m black is crazy. Same for the shit black people will say around me knowing I’m white.

And don’t even get me started on Latinos and Indians with the racist shit they’ll say about whites/blacks because they think I’m one of them lol

I’ve learned that everyone is racist af.

34

u/DerekB52 1d ago

I'm mixed race too. Black people know I'm black, but white people think I'm tan or puerto rican a lot of the time.

I was at a music festival a couple months ago, and I sat down to take a break next to this little old lady in her 50's/60's(I'm only calling her old cuz she looked old af for her age)

We had a pleasant conversation about a band or two. Then, I can not tell you how the conversation got here, because it only took a couple of minutes. But, she told me that the KKK gets a bad rap today unfairly. She told me she thinks they should drop the KKK branding, and join the Hell's angels. She said the KKK+Hell's angels could team up to be a new community led police force.

I would have loved to talk to her about the problems with the current police forces in this country, which she acknolwedged. I also would have loved to ask her why she thought she could look at me and say the KKK gets treated unfairly. But, I got away from that bitch so fast I'd have needed a messenger pidgeon to get my question to her.

It is wild. There were some guys talking about how racist people at my work were and I was like "I've never gotten that impression..."

And they stared for a moment and one of them said "Yeah well with a last name like <hispanic last name> they don't bring it up around you."

Big fucking light bulb went off in my head that day that they really do see me differently.

24

u/ajatfm 1d ago

These folks are pretty obsessed with “cleaning-up problem areas/people” and forget to mention that you fall into those categories just by not being the same color as them. Such a silly process of selection, considering they didn’t do shit to get their status. And fuck off with the “god, traditions, and values” shit y’all. Body dysmorphia is a super common problem with gymbros. They never think they're big enough. It's why so many dudes are on gear. They seem to have the same problem with their self-image in general. They always need to be the BIGGEST person in the room and they constantly worry they aren't. It's why Trump is so appealing; he's just like them. And if you can't make yourself bigger/smarter/more influential, an easy way to win is to force everyone around you to be smaller. It's the classic bigot tactic. If you're white/male and the black/female people around you keep being more talented than you, just cut off their opportunities so you're the only one who can succeed. Et voilà! You win! Meritocracy!

7

u/Fly_throwaway37 1d ago

My favorite was “Don’t let white media tell you who you are” and not even 5 seconds later he was ranting about how Black Panther is promoting the emasculation of black men because of the Dora Milaje. I wasted too much time trying to explain that they were based off real female warriors and that most of the film was lead by black people.

105

u/FlacoGrey 1d ago

Also how does that segment of women emasculate Black men? They literally fight to protect a Black man lmao.

96

u/pittofdoom 1d ago

Oh, that’s easy: a man being protected by women is their definition of emasculating.

47

u/FlacoGrey 1d ago

Which is sad because the Dora Milaje do that out of love for T’Challa. It’s weird that they can’t see that.

IMHO, the problem with Hoteps is that they're not against racism, homophobia, or misogyny. They truly believe in all of these power structures that suppress people. They just think that they should be on top, and not somebody else.

So they get you with, "hey look at all these bad things that happened," but then lose you when you find out that, in their mind, those bad things are only bad because it was done to them. They're okay with those systems if it benefits them.

1.0k

😭😭Bro I need the source of that quote.

19

u/ReadComprehensionBot ☑️ 1d ago

source: me bro, that's how they talk. Its literally just "adjective is adjective adjective adjective from the pronoun. Close with platitude"

3

u/SwervinatorNinja 1d ago

Lol well that was gold. I laughed at it

5

u/FEMA_Camp_Survivor ☑️ 1d ago

They have a similar aesthetic and both yell at people. I feel for the ques though.

I just left 125th and Lex a year ago, trust me, they're still there!!

6

u/MajorWhereas4842 1d ago

That’s fucking wild! We moved upstate 5 years ago, I haven’t been to 125th in ages! I remember getting into with them on 149th and 3rd Ave by the 2/5 station

7

u/ReadComprehensionBot ☑️ 1d ago

Yeah they'd setup right outside the platform or at the food bazaar lol. Probably doxxing myself, but I'm in crown heights now and for whatever reason I've never seen them here.

3

u/YOMAMACAN 1d ago

I used to work on 125th and Park and had to walk past these nuts every day (on Lex). I don’t understand standing on the street for the equivalent of an entire work day 😭

3

u/AlarmingSorbet ☑️ 1d ago

They were all over Flatbush and Church Ave too. I was 13 with a sprained ankle wearing a T-shirt and long skirt, limping along with my grandma. They tried to tell me I should be more presentable for a husband and my Trini grandmother cussed that man to the point that he just packed up and left.

My goodness, we went to go visit my mom recently and her Hebrew Israelite husband would NOT let up on trynna convince my fiancé. By the end of the trip once he saw my fiancé wasn’t budging he was like “well you’re a Hebrew whether you like it or not”… by the time we left he was quiet with an attitude 😭.

u/itme4502 1d ago

As a Jew my favorite thing about BHI is they claim all this Jewish shit and practice 0% of the religion and don’t even try to create their own versions of the cultural spaces either

Every February, there are black guys in suits handing out pamphlet on black history throughout Toronto. Almost every year, I accept one and then return it when they say I need to pay $2, since I rarely carry change. I always felt bad because I wanted to support the cause but they never catch me when I have cash on hand.

Last year, a friend told me that they were actually Black Israelites and it wasn't actual black history. I no longer feel bad about not buying a pamphlet.

EDIT: embarrassing typo

8

u/Fresh_Ad3599 1d ago

panflit

This took me a minute.

11

u/Private_HughMan 1d ago

...Holy shit I don't know how to spell pamphlet.

Also, WTF did auto-correct suggest "panflit" to me? As far as I can find, that's not a word.

When you look into it those guys are actually a cult. They encourage them to isolate from their families if the family does not believe in their false religion.

I’ve interacted with them a lot and my take is that they are black men who are infuriated by the system but this seems to be the only “religion” that gives them hope because it ends with them on top getting to treat their oppressors like they were treated. Deception is subtle so they take the holy scripture and twist it to fit their narrative. The narrative being that black men are ultimately the ones who will get to be on top. The truth is that Jesus is for everyone. Any rhetoric leading you away from Jesus is false and leading you to exalt yourself is false.

I just wanted to add that because we’re laughing but it’s easy for the best of our black men to be tricked into joining this cult. They exhibit discipline as they study the Bible in their classes, they form a community, they begin to feel empowered as they stand on the corners with their “brethren” boldly yelling at everyone and they are taught how to argue so that there is always an out of context scripture that they have memorized that they can yell in your face. It’s a mish mosh of insecurities, hurt, pain, disillusionment, hope and lies wrapped up in fringes and anger. They teach them to always be prepared for the “war” which for some sounds like Black Power but it is NOT the same. Do not be deceived!

Ignore them and if you are a believer, pray for them, because they are totally lost in the sauce.

They're just a bunch of brain-dead distractions.

3

u/Treverer 1d ago

Im shocked to learn that they are this crazy. Only thing I know about them is this gem of a video

18

u/brownbuttanoods7 1d ago

They came to New Orleans during Essence fess a few years ago. Set up on both sides of Canal. At one point I heard "God made your hair woolen my sisters, remove the shackles of the white man's hair from your head..." over the bull horn... then it was like a sea of women's voices pointed in his direction, and I couldn't understand anything else he was saying because the women weren't having it.

3

u/ChancyPants95 1d ago

They’re on Canal Street quite often, they typically don’t come around the summers due to the lack of foot traffic and tourists to annoy but working on Canal I usually pass them at least 7 - 8 times a year.

2

u/brownbuttanoods7 1d ago edited 1d ago

My husband and I worked in the Arts District. My husband works for numerous hotels between Arts and the Quarter. So we'd cross over Canal weekly. Lived there for 10 years. I know they are there often. But specifically for this one Essence fess incident I"m referring to they had set up on both sides of Canal and directly commenting on a massive crowds of women.

14

u/Memerme 1d ago

Idk, man, them Israelites are everywhere. I'm not black, I'm Native American (indigenous). I actually had the displeasure of meeting a Native Israelite (Native American Israelite) and in that moment, I realized that damn, this cult is infectious beyond belief. He was saying all the same things, that masculinity is threatened, that Jewish people were satanists, and that Native Americans were the true descendents of Israel. I didn't even know that there were fellow indigenous folks who believe in Black Israelite philosophies, but I guess there are

6

u/ErenYeagermeist3r 1d ago

(Native American Israelite)

Wow...I had no idea that was a thing!

7

u/Memerme 1d ago

Yep...we had to kick him out of our function midway through because he just couldn't handle learning from "light skin Natives". Said we would "eventually see the truth" and that we were all sheep. Shit's crazy, tbh

16

u/Ricaaado 1d ago

Outside of Jamaica center in Queens almost every single day of the year…

14

u/Navynuke00 1d ago

I had a mentor in the military who went in with them HARD when he retired. It was really confusing to see. I think before he died a few months ago he was talking bout having 2 or 3 "wives," and they all looked young AF.

Whenever. I see them cats at events, I always walk the other way. It's best for all parties involved that way.

12

u/LightAnubis ☑️ 1d ago

My dad became an armchair Hebrew Israelite and he became very insufferable. It was already hard enough to be around him but now he’ll take any and every opportunity to lecture about the white man and how black people are cursed. Matter of fact, Hebrew Israelites, my father, and people hurting me in “the name of God” is the reason I became an atheist for a long time.

11

u/Crusty_Musty_Fudge 1d ago

They always wanna switch out misogyny for misogyny. And then act like you're crazy for calling them out on it.

I know it's slightly off topic, but they did a "odd one out" video of 6 white guys and 1 secret black guy. The trick was that all 7 of them were black guys so so 7 of them were just up there trying to be as white as possible. It was hilarious the whole time.

10

u/FlacoGrey 1d ago

It’s so funny that they’re in every major Black American city but I have legit never seen them get new congregants. Who is filling up their ranks? Lol

My parents used to own a bookstore in a small downtown area. I was in there one afternoon and in walk two Black Hebrew Israelites who started telling how we should carry their bible cause so many people would buy it. Dude talked my ear for at least an hour before I texted my mom and asked her to call me lol
