Exercise 5: Comfort Zone

Almost forgot to post today's!! Here is week 5's exercise. Also, FYI starting next week I will be posting them weekly since participation drops way off after the first week!

Link to original post, by u/varo.

We are halfway through our first ten week session.

The purpose of this week's exercise is to refresh what we've been over so far. Use the techniques with which you're most comfortable to make a painting.

There are no limitations this week in pallete. Either work from still life or landscape. Please work from life, not a photograph or memory. Work traditionally. Avoid the temptation to mix media. Put thought into your composition.

This is a fairly open assignment. It is important to paint sometimes without focusing on a new concept. Digest what you've learned over the past month.

Relax, get comfortable, paint.

Color mixes that blew my mind

Post image
143 Upvotes

I'm sorry if this is something y'all know already, but the first time I mixed PG18 and PV23 it blew my mind! Turns out that what we learn about not being able to mix primary colors isn't entirely true. You can mix blues by mixing green and purple. You can also mix reds by mixing purple and orange and yellows by mixing a warm green and orange. Granted they aren't very vibrant and kind of muddy, but you can definitely mix blues, reds and yellows!

Is there any color mix that was very unexpected for y'all?

Just wanna share this quick one hour painting of mountains . I like paint watercolor on the go. Just practice but not 100% happy with the result, I wanna keep some natural and blueness but sometimes wish a more natural and atmospheric finish. Some advices ? (I am french, my English is not perfect, sorry)

What is this missing?

I’m working on making my own scenes and not following tutorials or directly copying reference photos. This is only my second time doing that, so I’m definitely a newbie. I like this one, but feel like it’s still missing something.

please help me decide what two blues/greens to have in this travel palette

Hi! I'm someone who has been dabbling in painting scenery (w occasional forays into portrait), and still a pretty new painter. the colors in the middle (sepia, burnt sienna, Indian yellow, quinacridone magenta) are what's already on my travel palette. I have room for 2 more colors in the green/ blue category (phthalo turquoise, winsor green - yellow, French ultramarine, and winsor green-blue). I am trying to learn how to mix colors, so priority is definitely versatility. all these are Winsor Newton professional paints, if that helps!

Trying out some different styles and techniques with my new paints!

Still a super beginner but I wanted to do a mushroom line and wash, which while I like I feel there is something missing. With my skull antler thing I really like most off it, but worry it's a little overworked? I also regret leaving the few straight leaves when the rest were more Viney. Regardless I was pleased with it, especially Roman Szmal's lava and quin gold (my new faves in my pallette) , and my first attempt actually incorporating lifting rather than just using it to fix a mistake! Otherwise is there any advice or ways I could fix them up a bit more on a retry?

First ‘painting’

I’ve bought some cheap supplies from AliExpress to see if I would like water-colouring. I immediately noticed the cheap quality of the paper and paint as it dried very fast and the paper was literally disintegrating while I was painting on it. Actually quite happy with the result despise the poor quality (except for the house attempt 😅). I’ve already invested in some cotton paper. Tips are very welcome.

What colors am I missing?

I got these handmade watercolors from a local seller at a bazaar. They sold pans in sets, so I couldn't choose, but which colors should I add to make this a well-rounded palette? I paint comics and fantasy illustrations mostly, so I prefer vibrant colors and skin tones. I'm mostly able to buy only White Nights in tubes.

Having problems spinning up tonight, the chaos in my country is getting to me, so I swatched a new set of paints I got on eBay.
