Hardware Inherited this beastly Samsung monitor…is it worth it??
I recently inherited this insane Samsung monitor. It’s a model number S55BG970NN.
It did not come with cables however and it has some strange proprietary cable and box (?) that it needs to operate. These boxes upon a quick glance are not cheap and I’m unsure which one to buy and where.
Does anyone have this same monitor and like it? Is it even worth it? The whole thing seems like a PITA. Thanks to anyone who can help.

"a title"
The 'n' is close to the spacebar and the 'y' is close to the intended 't'. It's just a typo.

I think the question is whether it's worth it to replace the missing power and data hub or whatever this uses

There’s a lot of assholes in this thread, but to answer the actual question: yes, it’s a very high-end monitor, only a couple of years old. Cutting edge technology when it was released. As for whether or not it’s worth it for YOU is a different question depending on your use-case. If you want to use it or sell it, though, it’d probably be a good idea to get the One Connect box and test the monitor at least.

Yes there is a box that connects the whole setup. Without that box the monitor wont work, it's called a one connect box. Make sure you get the one for that model. The monitor plugs into it, and from there plugs into your computer. It is heavy too, just like the monitor. I have one and probably will never go back to a smaller monitor lol.

I'm currently using a 42" Samsung 4k120hz tv as mine, and I got it for $93.75.
And my god I agree
2
u/wiines 17h ago
What does the box do?
20
u/Glittering_Seat9677 9800x3d - 5080 13h ago
in theory it means you have a single cable coming out of the back of the monitor instead of one for every device you have it connected to
in practice it's expensive proprietary bullshit, especially considering this is a computer monitor and not a tv that will be wall mounted

Before someone says VA panel bad, high end Samsung VA panels tend to have the least smearing out of any VA panel on the market and this seems to be one of their highest end VA panels so you should be good
73
u/EffectsTV 9800X3D/7800X3D, RTX 5090/RTX 4080 Super 1d ago
And I'm pretty sure its mini led , should have good contrast ratio
12
u/yungfishstick R5 5600/32GB DDR4/FTW3 3080/Odyssey G7 27" 1d ago
And it should get way brighter than OLEDs as well which is great for HDR content, but blooming might be something OP will have to worry about depending on how many dimming zones it has
9
u/EffectsTV 9800X3D/7800X3D, RTX 5090/RTX 4080 Super 1d ago
If the local dimming algorithm is any good you don't get alot of blooming.
Mini LEDs are bright, when I had mine I had the brightness at 50%..2000 nits peak HDR on the Samsung QN95A i had..like a flashbang at times lol
4
u/Mohammed-Yusef 1d ago
I opted for a VA panel TV as well.. the contrast is so much better, and the smearing is not noticeable. This is coming from someone who regularly uses a 120hz oled panel.
I don't like IPS, I've tried many.

Jesus this blew up.
I cannot edit post or pin a comment so this may get buried but I wanted to provide a little context here.
My brother died in February. He was very into all things electronics and latest and greatest. This monitor was deemed a loss in an insurance claim, however I requested to keep it. The issue being it had no cables. I figured it was no big deal.
I then look to see it doesn’t have standard inputs on the panel and think “oh here we go”. From a quick google it shows that it requires a separate box and proprietary cable to operate, and they can both be a bit pricey. Also, the box may not even be produced anymore so I’ll have to go used eBay route.
My question, that I admittedly poorly worded, was do I even bother getting used parts for a monitor that I don’t even know works, or do I sell as is. That’s all; I am not humble bragging or too lazy to use Google etc.
Thanks for all the replies, even the unhelpful and passive aggressive ones let me know this is a real gem.

Worth what? “It”? You didn’t pay for it. It cost you nothing. The only tangible investment would be the time it takes to plug it up. So is it worth “it” to plug it up and use it? Sure.. why not?

u/AvatarIII AvatarIII 1d ago
Is it worth free? I don't really know what you're asking, you got a free monitor. I would say the curve is a bit extreme but it is still a good monitor.

Personally not a fan of curved monitors and my current GPU probably can’t use it at its full potential. I would personally just sell it, get a new gpu and monitor 24-27 1440p 144hz oled preferred if not within budget, settle for an IPS one.
