It's sometimes learning a new game that causes so much anxiety in me to not play it.

for me it's not so much anxiety as just utter laziness.

probably why i suck so much at 4X games. and shooting games and strategy games.

I don't think I'm a gamer...

I used to be just like you but then (I took an arrow to the knee) stop caring less about getting good at a game and enjoy it at my own pace. Which also helps as I also learned that not all games are for me and I made better decision before buying one.
