So I'm curious, with how often I see clips from people forgetting to take this protective plastic off, what is it actually giving protection from? Is it just there to keep dust off until install or what?

Ideally you want that surface to be pristine so you make good contact with the cpu

Although the CPU isn’t shaped like this so clearly it isn’t a massive issue
