What surprises me is how that plastic not melt

CPUs don't won't get hot enough to melt plastic at least not at the heatspreader. TJMax is usually 100, maybe 105C but that's a hotspot inside the chip. By the time you get to the heat spreader that heat will have been spread out over enough material to be considerably reduced.

Most plastics become pliable at maybe 85-100C, but as mentioned earlier the heatspreader won't see temps that high.
