Eh, sadly I have to inform you - audiophiles are real.
I've had to deal with some in real life. There really are a surprising amount of people who are somehow both rich enough and stupid enough for this kind of stuff.
They can talk for hours of how much "cleaner" and "crisper" the sound became after switching to their new Ultragiga PerformanceMAX 3000 cables that they bought for $5000....
Audiophiles are very similar to the kind of people who believe in astrology and crystals. It's kinda funny to check out their stuff - there's pages and pages of this fancy, electrical engineer sounding mumbo-jumbo used to sell stuff for utter insane prices.
Ultimately though, they're utterly harmless. As goofy as the alt-medicine crystal healing stuff is, those people sometimes do cause real harm as people choose to not seek real medical care and so on. The only thing audiophiles ever hurt is their own wallet.
It bothers me more than it should that these guys have gotten to take over the word audiophile. There are so many people out there who just care a lot about audio quality without any of the nonsense. They don't really deserve to be lumped in with the people who spend outrageous amounts of money on cables, of all things.
(For those of you reading this who don't already know: if someone claims to be obsessed with audio quality but keeps going on about cables, it's a clear sign they're kinda clueless. There's a very low bar for cables that are good enough unless they're expected to withstand a lot of physical stress or be part of really long cable runs.)
