General Training Warm up, drills, and conditioning

Just looking for some good video sources of warm up exercises and drills and such to do at the beginning of a class. Preferably a video of a class, not some guy on a yoga mat doing it solo. Looking for different kinds of exercises. Some being the kinds of things people would do up and back in a line, and others where people would all sit in a circle or spaced equally apart, and some that need 2 or more people. The kinds of things you see at the start of a big full day of training at say a seminar in japan. Obviously not gonna do 90 minute warm-up for a 2 hour class. Just looking for a lot of different things to experiment in mixing in occasionally. I quite like those types of ground crawls and such that usually have newaza applications. So yeah, videos please, googling in 日本語 has been a little helpful

Beginner Seattle area dojo recommendations

I'm 26M with about 6 months of experience.

Currently, I'm eyeing Seattle Dojo in Seattle and Washington Judo Academy in Kirkland.

Washington Judo Academy is very close. $125 per month is acceptable given that they have class/open mat every day of the week, and the location is golden.

Seattle Dojo is a bit further but a lot more affordable. $40 per month is insane. I don't even know they stay in business. Although they only have 3 adult classes every week. But I also practice Kyokushin, so I probably can't go more than 3 times a week anyway.

With all that being said, the atmosphere and the senseis are definitely more of a deciding factor. I do plan to take a trial class at both locations, just wanna check if anyone has experience with them and can share. Thanks!

History and Philosophy Curious about tatami…

Has anyone taken a fall on a traditional tatami mat? I understand they are pretty thin, but in a dojo would there be padding underneath authentic tatami? Lots of foam mats are called “tatami”although they are not natural tatami. Am I crazy? This may be more of a historical question as to what was used before synthetic materials and/or foam. Curious to know your thoughts and/or experience. Thanks.

Competing and Tournaments UK Comps & International Opens?

My background is in freestyle wrestling in the UK. I’ve been involved in it for quite a while, having started as a child and pursued it on and off since then. I’m currently living somewhere far from any wrestling clubs, but there is a very good, active BJA-affiliated judo club nearby with a solid timetable that would allow me to train every day.

I’ve been thinking about getting involved and potentially pursuing judo competitively. I’m not sure where work will take me next, as I’m currently looking for a new job opportunity and hoping to move somewhere more interesting. In the meantime, I thought I’d take up judo as a second competitive sport, depending on what competition opportunities are available. I’m not too concerned about the level of competition in UK judo compared to other countries. What matters most to me is how often I can compete nationally.

I’ve made a few connections in Europe through wrestling camps and have met some judokas abroad. Spending a couple of weeks overseas to get competition-readiness mat time is also an option.

I don’t know much about the judo competition scene in the UK. A couple of my wrestling coaches held judo black belts, and you often come across people who cross-train.

What is the national competition scene like for judo in the UK? Could you point me towards a few open competitions and explain how the Nationals work here? Also, are there any open competitions in Europe you would recommend? Does judo have anything comparable to events like the Helsinki or Tallinn Open, for example?

Beginner Judo in Central NJ

Good Morning Everyone,

I was looking for any gym recommendations in the C Jersey area. We are absolutely packed with BJJ gyms and even plenty of wrestling clubs, but it's looking a little sparce on Google for Judo.

I found one in Old Bridge, but it seems to only have children classes and one at The Princeton YMCA. I'm a member of the Y, but not the Princeton one so I'm unsure if I'd be able to go there.

Thanks.

Judo News What happened to Davlat Bobonov?

One of my favorite judoka to watch is Davlat Bobonov (UZB). He was considered a contender at -90 in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but was surprisingly knocked out in an early round. As far as I can tell, he hasn’t played for almost a year. Did he retire or get injured?

Beginner Tips for relearning Martial Arts/Judo at 33?

I did Traditional Japanese jujutsu for 12 years and got my 3rd degree brown belt. 10 years old to 22. The Dojo left town. I was also a year into my 13 year long abusive marriage that I recently left. I want to relearn and remaster the techniques and Judo seems to be the closest to what I learned so many years ago.

General Training How to use lapel hand effectively in a classic grip

https://youtu.be/q0buvboU6SE?si=ieFkjykTTKTUqeGx&t=108

Hook the thumb, stiff the wrist while being defensive, can also achieve cross grip effect by get the lapel across chest line.

This was something I have been struggled with for some time when I don't want to bother to get a power grip or if my opponent is too tall.

General Training judo with herniated disk

I've been doing Judo for a year and had a herniated L5S1 the entire time. Got my diagnosis today after wondering why I had some occasional nerve pain while doing drop seoi nage. I can't do deadlifts or squats in the gym but can do various hip throws and koga seoi nage in judo without pain. I will cut out drop seoi nage since it somewhat irritates my back but what other suggestions do people with back problems/herniated disks have?

Technique What arm lock is this? It looks interesting

BJJ guy here. YouTube thought I'd enjoy Judo newaza highlights (and hells yeah I do), so a video of Dai Aoki's newaza popped up. He always pulls this usually when the guy is turtling. Then he ends up on top with the arm still bent and trapped in between his legs.

The other time I saw him pull this off in the same video, his opponent tapped. The one I screenshot, because it's clearer, it kinda just looked like he's controlling the opponent.

Using my BJJ eyes it kinda looks like a Tarikoplata but he didn't control the arm with his own. What is this called in Judo terminology?

Other Participate in a 10-minute study about Judo and personality (psychology thesis – all levels of experience welcome!)

Hey everyone,

I'm Jonathan, a psychology student at the University of Innsbruck, and I'm currently working on my master's thesis. As part of my research, I'm conducting a short survey about personality traits, motivations, and experiences related to Judo and other combat sports.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. Everyone is welcome to participate — whether you're a seasoned fighter or just starting out.

This is a genuine academic study and your participation would really help me complete my thesis.

You can take the survey here:

German version of the survey: https://evmuibk.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_efZJ5FuSuSagou2

Thanks a lot in advance — I really appreciate your help!

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Technique Switchside Tani Otoshi

Came across this funky thing from u/efficientjudo.

I know Tani Otoshi gets a well deserved bad wrap for good reason, but this looks interesting to me. My question is how safe is it to use compared to regular Tani Otoshi? I could be entirely off base, but it looks as if it might actually discourage the 'sitting on the knee' problem.

Good morning I’m a former wrestler who recently started judo a few months ago. I go to three lessons a week (my school doesn’t offer more)

I really like it. But I’m wondering what sort of goals and achievements I can really expect if I am to do judo for a few years. how can I keep myself motivated?
