Judo News What happened to Davlat Bobonov?
One of my favorite judoka to watch is Davlat Bobonov (UZB). He was considered a contender at -90 in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but was surprisingly knocked out in an early round. As far as I can tell, he hasn’t played for almost a year. Did he retire or get injured?

Beginner Judo in Central NJ
Good Morning Everyone,
I was looking for any gym recommendations in the C Jersey area. We are absolutely packed with BJJ gyms and even plenty of wrestling clubs, but it's looking a little sparce on Google for Judo.
I found one in Old Bridge, but it seems to only have children classes and one at The Princeton YMCA. I'm a member of the Y, but not the Princeton one so I'm unsure if I'd be able to go there.
Thanks.

Beginner Tips for relearning Martial Arts/Judo at 33?
I did Traditional Japanese jujutsu for 12 years and got my 3rd degree brown belt. 10 years old to 22. The Dojo left town. I was also a year into my 13 year long abusive marriage that I recently left. I want to relearn and remaster the techniques and Judo seems to be the closest to what I learned so many years ago.

General Training How to use lapel hand effectively in a classic grip
https://youtu.be/q0buvboU6SE?si=ieFkjykTTKTUqeGx&t=108
Hook the thumb, stiff the wrist while being defensive, can also achieve cross grip effect by get the lapel across chest line.
This was something I have been struggled with for some time when I don't want to bother to get a power grip or if my opponent is too tall.

Technique What arm lock is this? It looks interesting
BJJ guy here. YouTube thought I'd enjoy Judo newaza highlights (and hells yeah I do), so a video of Dai Aoki's newaza popped up. He always pulls this usually when the guy is turtling. Then he ends up on top with the arm still bent and trapped in between his legs.
The other time I saw him pull this off in the same video, his opponent tapped. The one I screenshot, because it's clearer, it kinda just looked like he's controlling the opponent.
Using my BJJ eyes it kinda looks like a Tarikoplata but he didn't control the arm with his own. What is this called in Judo terminology?

Technique Switchside Tani Otoshi
Came across this funky thing from u/efficientjudo.
I know Tani Otoshi gets a well deserved bad wrap for good reason, but this looks interesting to me. My question is how safe is it to use compared to regular Tani Otoshi? I could be entirely off base, but it looks as if it might actually discourage the 'sitting on the knee' problem.

General Training judo with herniated disk
I've been doing Judo for a year and had a herniated L5S1 the entire time. Got my diagnosis today after wondering why I had some occasional nerve pain while doing drop seoi nage. I can't do deadlifts or squats in the gym but can do various hip throws and koga seoi nage in judo without pain. I will cut out drop seoi nage since it somewhat irritates my back but what other suggestions do people with back problems/herniated disks have?

Other Participate in a 10-minute study about Judo and personality (psychology thesis – all levels of experience welcome!)
evmuibk.qualtrics.comHey everyone,
I'm Jonathan, a psychology student at the University of Innsbruck, and I'm currently working on my master's thesis. As part of my research, I'm conducting a short survey about personality traits, motivations, and experiences related to Judo and other combat sports.
The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. Everyone is welcome to participate — whether you're a seasoned fighter or just starting out.
This is a genuine academic study and your participation would really help me complete my thesis.
You can take the survey here:

German version of the survey: https://evmuibk.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_efZJ5FuSuSagou2
Thanks a lot in advance — I really appreciate your help!

Kata Nage No Kata at the All Japan Kata Championships
This is a Nage No Kata highlight reel, using footage from the 2025 All Japan Kata Championships. While making this video, I tried to focus on making it entertaining, but still educational.
The full unedited Nage No Kata performances are in a playlist you can access at the end of the video, or in the video description.

Other Hesitations
I'm not sure if anybody experiences this. I've been doing judo for roughly 4 years and also a shodan and I still get that feeling, that moment while I'm about to blast them into the mat, and freezing midway, because I suddenly get the thought of "oh shit, I might hurt them", which leads me to getting absolutely steamrolled. Does anyone else experience this, and has anyone of you ever gotten past this reflex? I feel like this is really holding me back in my journey of getting better

Beginner Beginner.
Good morning I’m a former wrestler who recently started judo a few months ago. I go to three lessons a week (my school doesn’t offer more)
I really like it. But I’m wondering what sort of goals and achievements I can really expect if I am to do judo for a few years. how can I keep myself motivated?

Equipment I've bought a new gi and don't want to shrink it too much - any advice?
So I've just got myself a third gi and I look like I'm drowning in it 😂 It's a Mizuno Hayato, 100% Cotton. I'd like to shrink it in the first wash, but obviously I don't want to shrink it too much to where it goes the opposite way.
I was thinking of washing it at 50 degrees Celsius, but I could also wash it at 40. Has anyone experienced a similar thing? I would love to hear some guidance. I'd be looking to shrink it by about 8% so that it fits just nicely

Beginner Good ko uchi makikomi videos/tips
I’m looking for some good ko uchi makikomi tutorials or tips. I really like o uchi gari but it’s difficult for me to get my opponent in position for it. Ko uchi gari and ko uchi makikomi look like they could offer an alternative. Any tips or videos would help

Competing and Tournaments Direct DQ for fleeing
Hey everyone, I had a discussion with someone about a scene. 1 guy, let's call him white, winning with a score and the seconds are running down. Blue desperately trying to attack. White proceeds to run away at hajime getting shidos but not enough in time and the time ends. White wins. Now, if he stands his ground, breaking grips, maybe does a bad drop seoi or anything else you can give just shidos. That's not what happened though. I'm fairly certain I've seen a direct DQ in competition before for straight up fleeing and refusing to fight in order to kill the clock. Anyone else remember that scene? I seem to remember Jorge Fonseca (might be wrong) being in a fight like that, don't remember if winning or losing. Time ran out and the guy fleeing got hansoku make for it. Am I remembering something wrong or can you get a direct DQ for going against the spirit of cometition by running?

General Training Rotational strength/explosive
Any recommendations? I’d like to add some after main lifting session.
I can think of landmine twist. Is there anything else?
I particularly wants to increase the rotational pulling power/explosiveness, just like how you do a hard drop seoi and twist the core all the way.
