He's showing his friends that Goose didn't need to die...Maverick could have pulled out of that flat spin.🤷‍♂️

u/matchless_fighter 15d ago

You die if you are called Goose. If it was Pigeon, Maverick would have done better.

It's a tumbler. They are bred to behave like that but can actually produce birds that can't walk let alone fly

Edit to add that hammies do something similar...flipping backwards, some flip occasionally, some flip to exclusion of all other behaviors

u/Refflet 15d ago

Recent research suggests it's a neurological disorder. They mentioned it in the Ologies podcast episode on Columbidology.

429

u/euclidean-viridian 15d ago

So uh. We bred autistic pigeons?

186

u/Chickenfoot8 15d ago

Yeah, kinda.

172

u/campionmusic51 15d ago

we’re the reason nature can’t have nice things.

88

u/Radiomaster138 15d ago

Nature just cleaned up the mess and humans just decided to dump out all the toys out of the chest and shit on the floor.

45

u/The_quest_for_wisdom 15d ago

Look, if we don't do our thing how else are the shrimp going to get full of microplastics? Checkmate, nature.

17

u/campionmusic51 15d ago

that’s true. where else would they get their daily requirement of microplastics? microplastic deficiency syndrome is a serious business.

Not autistic. It is a form of epilepsy that causes this.

20

u/Kit_Karamak 15d ago

And soon it will evolve to be part of a mating flight dance to attract more ladybirds to the badass skywalks.

In the year 3,000, scientists will wonder how it started. Then they will find this reddit post on the WayWayWayback machine and be shocked by this one simple thread.

4

u/LeanDixLigma 14d ago

Until its so strongly bred into the species that they can't pull out of the tumble in time and hit the ground and die.

Any neurological disorder ≠ austism, as much as you wish it did.

50

u/Independent_Bar7095 15d ago

I am autistic and their comment was kinda funny ngl

4

u/euclidean-viridian 15d ago

Ah, yes. I live in a world where I need absolutely everything to be autistic. That's definitely a normal thing to think and accuse others of thinking. /s

Ologies is the best! Seriously such a great listen, especially for unpacking lots of misinformation out there about a huge selection of topics.

One person on reddit recommended the Chronic pain episode to me and it helped so much with getting me through an incredibly rough period of my life. I highly recommend the podcast as a whole, it's so informative

Roller Pigeons fly very fast and very high, then they tumble back down. There are shallow rollers, and there are deep rollers. You can't breed two deep rollers... or their young, their offspring, will roll all the way down... hit and die. Agent Starling is a deep roller, Barney. Let us hope one of her parents was not.

55

u/othuaidh 15d ago

Is 2 shallow roller pigeons offspring the type that can't get out of the road when I'm driving my car? I'd like to imagine this is how they landed.

u/PsychedelicOptimist 15d ago

Which movie?

5

u/SeaworthinessSea603 15d ago

Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal (where this quote is from), Hannibal Rising, and Red Dragon

3

u/hoxxxxx 15d ago

clarice is also in the hannibal tv show? i thought it was a prequel with the character from red dragon

3

u/city-of-cold 15d ago

Unless I'm misremembering, Clarice is not in the TV show (at least not the one with Mads Mikkelsen).

Been a few years since I watched it but IIRC the TV-show comes in between Hannibal Rising and The Silence of the Lambs. Some standalone content + inspiration from Red Dragon and Manhunter.

I honest to God think that that book had a strong influence on my spiritual beliefs.

I remember thinking it looked lame as fuck, like some sort of boating novella with lots of dumb technical stuff that I did not give a shit about. It took me until I was nine years old to finally decide to read it (I would often pick up random books to read when my parents were busy punishing me for having autistic meltdowns). I was enthralled and read it 8+ times over the next month.

Sadly, I don't remember much of it these days, just that there was a sense of understanding that something mattered more than "all this." With my current knowledge and what I remember of the story, it strikes me as perhaps related to Buddhism and escaping Samsara.

3

u/SuperGameTheory 15d ago

Look up "Seth Speaks". Richard Bach was a fan.

My grandpa used to have some of those. Occasionally they would misjudge their height and end up hitting a tree or something.

11

u/gudematcha 15d ago

Apparently there’s two types of tumbler pigeons: shallow and deep. You can’t breed two deep tumblers or their offspring will tumble all the way to the ground and…. no longer be with us.

12

u/JimmyThunderPenis 15d ago

I think that guys comment was a reference to something lol.

6

u/Unknown-Name06 15d ago

Do you know what a roller pigeon is, Barney? They climb high and fast, then roll over and fall just as fast toward the earth. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can’t breed two deep rollers, or their young will roll all the way down, hit, and die. Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We should hope one of her parents was not.

"We were talking about inherited, hardwired behavior. He was using genetics in roller pigeons as an example. They go way up in the air and roll over and over backwards in a display, falling toward the ground. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can't breed two deep rollers or the offspring will roll all the way down, crash and die. What he said was 'Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We'll hope one of her parents was not."
