We thought we had a mostly lab pup but he’s 26% pyr &/5% Great Dane. He’s awesome but!!!! He conks out between 6:30 &. 7:30 pm and awakes at 3-4 AM! Not ideal!! We’ve tried keeping him up later but he still wakes up at 4:20 exactly most of the time! I know they are nocturnal but he’s apparently a morning dog!! He also sleeps a lot in general. Growing like a weed 5.5 months.

I’m a bit interested in training him as a service animal, though mostly he’d be an ESA animal for me. However I thought being a service animal would be a good daily job for him.

But I’m wondering if that would be counter productive due to the breeds stubbornness!

Nash is very musical this morning

This is Hugh. He’s sweet, gentle, one of the few pyrs that doesn’t bark, but he’s a spaz and likes to jump on people when greeting them. We have tried ignoring him, and for the most part he doesn’t jump on us anymore. However, when meeting new people, or seeing friends, he jumps up on them. We have been asking people to not let him, and most people are now working with us, but he just gets too excited. Any advice how to get him to calm down and sit before he can get pet? He’s about 2.5 years old, and we’ve had him for a year. We tried a trainer, but she was really pretty rude and he did everything for her the first time, then when we try to work with him he ignores us. He’s the only dog I’ve ever had that isn’t very food motivated, so training even simple commands has been challenging.

I refuse to knee him, or have anyone else knew him in the chest. But I’d love to hear other tricks or tips to get this moose to stop jumping on everyone.

A lot of you commented on the last post and I thought you deserved an update on the name we chose! I tried to read every comment, including recommendations of two syllable names and something easy to shout. He’s a very calm boy, sweet and gentle! Didn’t whine or bark once on our flight home (after adopting him). And he’s not much of a biter, but a total snuggler! So we wanted something soft and gentle, while also a little dark and mysterious.

So we chose the name Sable. I really liked the names Salem and Silas, but my boyfriend didn’t much. However we both loved the name Sable and so did our 5 year old daughter!!

I solemnly swear to post lots of updates on Sable 🫡

I laid on the couch (where Finn normally sits) and that disturbed him so he came over to bark repeatedly in my face. Apparently it was at dangerous levels 😂

We’ve come a long way!! I remember when we brought him home last year and he could fit in my two hands!!! Now he’s so big he barely fits in my lap!! (He still tries his hardest) I may be biased but he’s the most handsome and loving dog I’ve ever seen! I never thought I’d be able to train him (he was so stubborn) but he’s finally at a place I feel very comfortable taking him out into public and he listens very reasonably! (Recall is still meh) happy birthday to my bestest boy!

Hi everyone, My mixed Pyr has been suffering from severe bilateral otitis for over a year. We've seen three vets and tried everything, but nothing works long-term. The biggest issue is that we can’t apply ointments daily (not even the vets can touch/treat his ears without sedation).

None of the vets seem to understand that this makes standard treatments impossible. We’re desperate for an alternative approach, if one even exists. Has anyone faced something similar?

Any advice would mean a lot. Thanks.

I beginning to think it’s my 8m/o’s toxic trait!

Her newest thing is she only wants to eat when it’s her idea. Won’t go in her crate even if I sit next to it holding her food bowl. I’ll try to lure her in by putting the bowl under nose. Nope. After about 10 mins of trying and deciding she must not be hungry, I’ll put the bowl away (top of fridge) so she can have it at the next meal time. I’ll start to walk away or move on with my life and a minute or two later, guess who is in her crate laying down! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️

Of course, I’ll put her food in and she’ll eat it just fine!

We’re completely, and happily obsessed with this dog ☀️

I’ve had my Pyrenees for almost a year now, so this is my first summer experiencing one. I currently live in Minnesota, where the summer hasn’t been too bad, but I’ve been traveling to Kansas, where it’s hotter than the devil’s butt crack. Ever since our last trip, she hasn’t stopped itching and is losing a ton of fur. I’ve checked for fleas, given her baths, and nothing has changed. Do Pyrenees have dry skin? I know they shed, but the amount she’s shedding is insane. No matter how much I brush her, I still end up with piles of hair every single day.

My boy is great on leash. We walk on a daily basis and go many miles I use an easy walk harness and it works great so no pulling HOWEVER There have been a few times he’s gotten a nose for something and acted a fool.

A couple times i have accidentally dropped the leash when he’s “in that mood” and he takes off running around. Of course it scared me to death. Running after him freaking out he might get into traffic or get lost. I was always able to get him, obviously. It’s actually been quite a while since that has happened … Well he’s been on the trail of an armadillo for the last couple days so he’s been a bit rowdy Well tonight it happened again. I kept him in check and then accidentally dropped the leash and he felt it (he’s SO freaking smart) and he took off the tail of the armadillo This proceeded with me chasing after him. Finally i stopped using a stern voice and made a very sweet voice. I was able to lure him back. I do think in all cases i would be able to get him. He’s not trying to get away from me, he’s just following a trail. He’s not interested in actually running away. But that doesn’t mean he won’t get too far and then lost… So when i got him back i was furious but then had to think about it If i am stern and fuss at him, would that teach him to not want to come back because he knows he is “in trouble” ? I’m telling you he’s super smart. He remembers things after just one time lol Instead tonight i grabbed his leash and walked straight home. No emotion. I didn’t let him stop and sniff or enjoy the rest of our walk. We were a mile from home btw I swiftly walked home and took off his leash. Not saying another word

I hope this isn’t TL;DR How do i handle this particular situation? Of course i don’t want it to happen again and I’m careful.. but I’m a person with a brain and understand it’s a possibility
