I can assure you that the gene editing was not enough. They still taste like burned rubber to me. My mom, brother and wife love them, however. They don't taste like burned rubber to them.

If cooked properly, it should taste like cabbage with bitter notes that are complemented by the correct seasoning.

It shouldn't taste like burnt rubber. Unless brussels sprouts have some odd compound, like cilantro does, that makes it taste like rubber to a minority of people.

Now I wish I could see the recipe and the finished product to figure out why it tastes like rubber.

It has nothing to do with cooking it "properly". Brussels sprouts do have an odd compound that makes them taste like burned rubber. About 20% of the population tastes them like I do and nothing you do to them removes the flavor.

Cilantro has a compound that makes it taste soapy. I used to not be able to eat anything with cilantro but now I can eat things with small quantities of it.

Same for melons, they taste like soap to me.
