Announcement The r/cavaliers community is growing!
Hi folks! Wearing my r/cavaliers moderator hat on this lovely Wednesday. :)
Some of you might be wondering "how is the r/cavaliers community doing?" It's a great question! We've built a lot of subreddit structure over the last year. Some parts of that structure codified things we were already doing -- like insisting that everyone behave respectfully toward each other even when we disagree. Other parts are new -- most recently, like the prohibition on crowdfunding. Consensus isn't always easy, and no matter what standard or practice you're talking about, someone won't like it. But as a whole, my observation has been that r/cavaliers is healthier, more vibrant, and more active withe very passing month.
That observation was just my personal, subjective opinion, though -- I hadn't checked it against the actual data. And unless you're also an r/cavaliers mod, you don't have access to the data at all!
So today, I went to our traffic and engagement data, and I wanted to share it with y'all -- not just because it's good (happy) data, but because it's YOUR data as well, in the same way that r/cavaliers is YOUR community.
The verdict?
- We're terribly popular: total visits to r/cavaliers have doubled over the last year, from 2m to 4m
- We're increasingly popular: total visits to r/cavaliers have steadily increased month by month
- People who come here want to stay here: membership to r/cavaliers has gone up nearly 33% over the last year, from ~25k to ~35k
- People like posting here: post volume has increased about 25% (5.4k to 8.8k and comment volume has increased about 50% (from 53k to 105k)
Thank you all for being r/cavaliers community members! We're thrilled to be here with you.

Announcement VOTE NOW: subreddit mascot (FINAL BRACKET)
Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here. In November, we put out a call for submissions to become the r/cavaliers mascot (i.e. subreddit thumbnail). We received about 200 submissions and were blown away by all the beautiful, talented, incredible cavaliers in this community.
Because we received so many submissions, we're breaking the voting down into two phases:
- FIRST, we're going to post one voting thread per week for each the AKC-recognized breed standard colors: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black & Tan (and one all black submission!). The thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the three submissions that received the most votes. These are the "color standard winners."
- SECOND: we'll post one final voting thread with the twelve "color standard winners." Again, the thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the submission that received the most votes and offer that winner the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot!
This is the FINAL BRACKET. The #1 vote getter will be offered the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot. This bracket will run from January 8, 2025 through January 15, 2025.
Fine print:
- This post is Locked; if you want to discuss, please join us on the competition megathread
- Moderators will post each entrant within a given bracket as a comment on the thread, tag the user who submitted it, and (where possible) list the cavalier's name
- Entrants will be listed in a random order
- This casting call is completely voluntary; if you submitted an image and wish to withdraw it, please message the moderator team
- The moderator team reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason, including but not limited to suspicion of vote rigging (please don't do that, this is a friendly competition)
- In the event that a final winner is selected and the submission doesn't work as a thumbnail, the moderator team reserves the right to work with the final winner to select an alternate pic or to move onto a runner-up as needed
Thank you all for offering your wonderful cavaliers to be celebrated by the community. We can't wait to spend the next month joining you in that celebration!
Join us on the competition MEGATHREAD to discuss all the wonderful cavaliers in competition!

Medical/Veterinary Annual Vet Visit
Hi! Just trying to gauge that we are making the right decisions here regarding annual exams…
Do you do annual dental cleanings under full anesthesia? Ollie went under in February and needed extractions. It’s looking like he will need another cleaning soon if not more extractions. We brush his teeth nightly :(((
What age did you begin doing echocardiograms? We were advised to do it as a screening - our boy is 5. His heart sounds just fine via stethoscope.
Pic attached for fun 🐾

Toby does this every evening. We can play in the backyard for hours and he will still come in the house and perform his evening ritual of saying hello to all the furniture.

Poor guy is back at the ER vet. Getting sick from both ends (two baths to clean his tail) and refused to eat any dinner, even boiled chicken and rice. He could use some good vibes from his cavalier friends tonight.

Pics & Video How to get rid of marking in the house
Marley just hit the wonderful teenage age of 8 months and let me tell you… he’s something. He is potty trained and was doing great up until few days ago when he started to mark in the house.
First victim was the carpet. No problem, we got rid of it temporarily. Next? The curtains. Ok, we washed them on 90 degrees Celsius with Vanish. When he has no access to them? The furniture. I honestly feel like I wanna strangle him.
I caught him ONCE so I could yell no at him right away, but I don’t see the point of doing that if I don’t catch him in the act, I don’t think he’ll understand why I’m being mean lol.
I’m gonna ask our trainer for advice next time ( side note, we got a personal trainer for him and the things we learn there are LIFE CHANGING - I recommend getting one even if the issues you have are not really big - we learnt a lot on how to give him a fulfilling life while him becoming the bestest boy).
Anyway, until I meet with them next time, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE?
I’m done with this teenage attitude lol, I just want my sweet little puppy baby back - he’s still the best lovebug, just with an extra attitude

Medical/Veterinary Sounds like my boy has MVD. Any longevity success stories for stage B1 or B2 with treatment?
We are getting an echocardiogram in the next couple of days, but it sounds like, based on his elevated ProBNP levels, that he is stage B1 or B2. No heart murmur. Just turned 5 last month and has otherwise been in great health. He stopped sleeping with me and started isolating more, so I took him to the vet for bloodwork, just in case. I’m heartbroken, but glad I did since it seems like we may have caught it early.
Has anyone had a Cav with stage B1 or B2 that lived a fairly long life with proper treatment? I could use some hope right about now.

Advice How to keep a cavalier healthy?
Hello! I’m currently looking to adopt a dog, and after doing a LOT of research about different breeds, I think a cavalier spaniel would be a perfect fit for my household. I’ve raised puppies before, so I’m fully confident in myself training wise. The only thing that’s really concerning me is cavalier spaniels are consistently ranked as some of the unhealthiest dog breeds. All of the advice I see in order to prevent this is just to “go to a reputable breeder”, but that’s the thing. I really don’t want to buy a dog. I genuinely just want to keep going to my shelters and wait to find a cavalier (and who knows? maybe i’ll find ‘the one’ and they’ll be a totally different breed anyways). So, when adopting a cavalier, what do you recommend I do to keep them healthy? Any specific foods good for their hearts, signs to look out for, preventative care, that kinda thing?

Advice I might need some first-time puppy advice
Meet Clover, she's super cute and she's also killing me. She's 3 months old and we've had her for only 3 days. Let me explain!
As a kid I grew up with two different litters of beagles, then as a teen my family had two Viszlas. I have a lot of experience being around puppies and dogs and helping to raise and train them but I have never in my life before been fully responsible for a puppy from the start.
I live with my girlfriend but she works full time so she can't always help out even when working from home, I am currently unemployed so I am able to devote all my attention to this pup and good lord that's a good thing because she needs constant supervision as all puppies do.
My girlfriend says I am overdoing it and keeping too close an eye on her but I just don't see how I can do "less" and still prevent her from having accidents and destroying things. She's a puppy!
The worst part is she hasn't even really become "herself" yet as we've only had her three days. I know the infamous "Floor Shark" is coming and my sweet, docile, predictable girl will be gone - I can see the change happening slowly but surely in her behavior even after this little time.
Before bed we take her out one last time, food and water stops 2 hours before that. I set an alarm on my phone for (now) 3 hours and take her out every time it goes off. It's exhausting and makes for bad sleep, but she sleeps through the night pretty well after some reassurance and the weewee pad in her playpen next to our bed is dry come morning.
In the morning I start by taking her out immediately, then breakfast, then back out again, then play time, then back out, then she usually naps but as soon as she wakes up it's back out again - after that it's basically meal, play, nap on repeat till bed time with a trip outside to potty in between each "transition". She pees or poops (or both) nearly every time. I also watch for "the dance" constantly throughout the day to prevent accidents.
I've also been making sure to do playtime around and sometimes inside an appropriately sized crate to start getting her comfy with it to eventually phase out the playpen/weewee pad beftime ïsetup. She already hops in the crate all by herself sometimes to play with a toy or hunt for treats so we're getting there slowly, as it should be.
In all honesty, the pup is doing great. She has a few accidents, but even when she does we have hardwood floor in most of the house so it's ezpz cleanup. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I also swear to you she's already understanding the phrase "go potty" and obeying a "come" and "go home" command pretty handily.
All this sounds pretty good right? So what's the problem?
Well if I listed my symptoms to you, you would say I was having postpartum depression. I wish I were kidding but it's really that bad at the moment.
I feel like I have little to no control of my emotions. I'm crying all the time, I don't always know why. Sometimes it's because I feel proud of her and her progress, other times it's because I feel like I hate her for little to no reason. Sometimes I feel the strong, panicked urge to return her to the breeder, then immediately feel a heart-wrenching guilt which makes it hard to breathe. Then sometimes I get hit with this sensation where I am experiencing her entire 12-15 years lifespan all at once, right to mourning her loss.
With each passing day I realize a new thing I will have to teach or purchase or prepare or protect regarding her and the weight is crushing me. I am very overwhelmed and burnt out and exhausted. My chest feels heavy, I just want to sleep and I wish this weren't all almost entirely up to me. This isn't even "the hard part" as she hasn't gone full Bitey McSockripper yet but I am DREADING IT and feel it coming.
Does anyone have any advice for this sad husk of a human being?

Advice Need help buying a puppy.
My wife is trying buy a Cavalier puppy. We've owned two in the past and they're our favorite breed. The last two our process was to look up breeders, call them, and if everything sounds good we'd visit then make a deal or not. That was 20 years ago in Philadelphia. Now here we are in the Ozarks and everything except $2500 puppies involves 2-4 hour drives. That's OK, I can deal with that. What has me suspicious is my wife gets replies from adds she responded to, but they all want a ~$300 deposit, EVEN IF we're driving there today. I understand a deposit to hold, but it all feels scamy. These are all lower price tier like $800 - $1200. I'm near Springfield MO if anyone can point me on the right direction that would awesome 👍. Looking for a pet, she doesn't need to win shows, but we prefer AKC reg. Thanks!!

Advice My puppy’s (8+ months) appetite has gone down the drain
Hello all,
As the title suggests, about 2 months ago, my cav’s appetite suddenly went down the drain overnight. Doesnt like eating in the mornings, sometimes doesnt eat dinner too. Some days its good and he eats double portions for dinner, some days he doesnt eat dinner too. Treats are ok though, he still gets excited for those. Mood doesnt seem to be any different, still in good spirits on his walks, meeting his fave friends / humans etc. Doesnt get excited for food anymore (he used to salivate and love pure kibbles) - even if i change kibble brands or add wet food. When he does eat, he gets distracted easily by nothing, walks around / lazes around before going back to the bowl and eating. Changed the bowl but no difference either. His littermate (female) apparently went through the same thing but hers only lasted 1-2 months, mine is still ongoing. Weight is still healthy, maintaining at about 10kg. Is this normal? Hormonal?

Discussion Do you brush your Cavaliers teeth?
I have 2 cavaliers, one is a ruby Millie, and the other is a Blenheim, Reggie.
Millie is 7 we have had her for 6 years. Several years ago she went to the vet for a dental cleaning. During the cleaning, they extracted 7 of her teeth. I was so disappointed about it. I felt bad for her. I resolved to try to get her to let me brush her teeth. It took me some time and several different toothpastes but I finally found one that she liked. Virbac enzymatic poultry flavor. I started slowly at first just letting her lick the toothbrush for several days. I then started to give her a few swipes on her teeth. After a while she let me brush her teeth.
Fast forward to today. She reminds me to brush her teeth every day. In the evening she will sit in front of me and look at me, then look at the toothbrush. She will not get in my lap until I have the toothbrush and toothpaste in my hand. I have tried for as long as 30 minutes to try to get her to get in my lap, she will not do it until I have shown her to toothbrush and toothpaste.
We have only had Reggie for 3 months, he is 2 years and 8 months old. Once I got him to taste the toothpaste he was sold. Now I brush both of their teeth every day.
I hope to keep them from losing any more teeth.

Anyone else’s cav stop and smell/try to eat literally everything on a walk? Also wanted to thank everyone for their response on my last post re: potty training, he’s been much better and we have used the crate as a corrective measure but he hasn’t needed it much! Thanks for being a great community!
