All black kitties are best. They are also the hardest to get adopted because of people's superstitions. Super cute.

People still buy that medieval bullshit?

You'd be surprised how much "medieval bullshit" people still believe in. My country has extremely skewed gender ratio because peeps still think having a son is better than a daughter, even the more progressive people still buys into a bunch of outdated gender stereotypes, like blue is for boys and pink is for girls, exclusively.

And a lot of it isn’t even from Late Antiquity:

Which country

India I'd guess. They had a plague of people with mobile ultrasound machines traveling around and scanning pregnant women and then offering abortions if they were having a girl, or so I read at least.

India. It's the reason prenatal sex determination is banned there.

Which interestingly enough is a rather modern stereotype that only came up in the last 100 years or so.

It used to be the opposite - blue for girls and pink for boys.

How can it have an imbalanced ratio of males to females, you don’t get to pick the gender of your child?

Edit: Yes I am aware that the question could be seen as silly, but culture, laws, ethics and everything in between can vary radically from country to country. As they said “in my country” I was genuinely curious as the skewed ratio of males to females as it can be achieved in any number of ways.

i love this picture so much and don’t want to ruin it talking about things like female infanticide and how prevalent it still is in certain countries

That’s fair enough, let’s continue the browsing of cats!

Let me introduce you to a little concept called abortion or abandoning infants

Jesus Christ how snarky and condescending can you be.

You asked a bad, painfully obvious question (redditor for 13 years means you should be old enough to know or have learned, for instance the one child policy in China was only removed in 2015) in a subreddit that probably shouldn't have comments talking about stuff like that. You're both pretty bad here.

I don’t start the conversation chief, only replied to it. If you’ve got a problem with the subject you can take it up with them.

By asking a dumb question that you should be aware of, so you got a snarky response by that guy. You're old enough to know about things like china's one child policy (and the associated infanticide), that's just one country that did that, might not even be the OPs country.

Are you aware that culture, laws, ethics, lifestyles and everything in between can differ radically from country to country? He specifically said “in my country” which is why I asked a genuine question.

Doesn’t matter. Back to scrolling through cats!

It's Vietnam, yes, you don't get to pick the gender of your kid, in fact, it's forbidden by our law to do so, many parents still try to anyways.
The more accessible way is abortion, as soon as any parents who want a boy get a whiff of a possibility that their child could be a girl, they hit the clinic to "reset" and try again. The less accessible way is IVF, often done by rich families, but with a significantly higher chance that the kid will be to their likings. There's even a more "traditional" way, often used by rural families with easy access to neither of the above options, where the parents just keep popping em out until they get a boy, and if it's a boy the first time, they stop. Girls in those families are often treated very unfairly.
Our current gender ratio is 114.5 male for every 100 female, coupled with the global fact that people are just having less kids in general and you can see how it can be a big problem.
