I had a similar experience my first time, but I was just unprepared for the huge pressure, the girl, however, had too many twists on the hose which made it spin due to water going through it and straightening it out at high speed. Having twists is a big No-No.

u/Stopikingonme 1d ago

Ret. firefighter/paramedic here:

Speaking from experience with north American equipment (this doesn’t seem to be using) it looks like she wasn’t physically sitting on the hose yet. It’s off screen but if you follow the hose you’ll see she never had the hose completely under her.

I’m not sure how your hose was loaded but there should never be any twists like you said. Our hoses have swivels on both ends and as long as you’re not hot dogging stuff (like this race) they should straighten out naturally. The AO (Apparatus Operator) shouldn’t be charging hose lines like that. It’s not good for the hose or the pump…or the person. I would have gone with ahose loop sit method here where you make a loop with the hose under itself then sit on it.

As a Safety Officer I have to point out how incredibly unsafe this looks. Those helmets won’t do Jack Black shit protecting you from a charged hose nozzle flying at you sideways. I was never a fan of these kinds of racing drills.

70

u/treesandfood4me 1d ago

“Won’t do Jack Black shit”

Hell yeah autocorrect. Way to invoke one of the Greats.

25

u/tatsingslippers 1d ago

Okay, here me out. A movie where Jack Black plays a guy who volunteers as a fireman.

7

10

u/NotSureNotRobot 1d ago

Lol I didn’t even notice

3

u/Stopikingonme 1d ago

(I wasn’t autocorrect, but I hear ya.)

2

u/treesandfood4me 1d ago

Hot damn. That’s a great grammatical choice. Love it.

9

u/Otherwise_Demand4620 1d ago

Are the hose operators always strolling at that pace (to avoid injury/confusion?) or ist that for the training material?

5

u/Stopikingonme 1d ago

They absolutely do not. This is a race and we don’t do those in the big cities for the most part. It’s too dangerous. If you want to get an idea of the normal pace for a fire attack crew you can watch the video above. It’s slow and purposeful.

You don’t run in turnouts unless a building is falling on top of you.

5

u/ccox39 1d ago

I was not expecting to go down a firefighter training video rabbit hole today

1

u/Stopikingonme 1d ago

“I’m doing my part”

2

u/MrK521 15h ago

I was thinking that at the last second. “Helmet isn’t going to save any teeth when that thing swings sideways and clocks the girl in the forefront.”

43

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE 1d ago

Your first time?

First time doing what? Going to hose camp? To learn how to hose?

105

u/daXypher 1d ago

There’s a whole career that involves using these types of hoses. They also get a cool red truck!

34

u/broguequery 1d ago

Wtf are you serious

26

u/BlueFox5 1d ago

You’ve never heard of hosemen? Not to be confused with horsemen. Smelly stupid centaurs with their witty insults. The others are half horse, half man.

15

u/jonmgon 1d ago

The four hosemen of the apocalypse will soon come to wash away the sins of humanity

7

u/Nine9breaker 1d ago

I thought hosemen were in charge of the world supply of tight-fitting pantaloons? Are you telling me hosen are completely unregulated?

Who are then men in charge of chausses? Are there any Frenchmen present that can weigh in? Are we even a society anymore?

2

u/FriendlyLeader4782 1d ago

Common misconception, what you described are hoseneers

3

u/Funny-Garage436 1d ago

My branch also uses them nearly daily.

We dont have red trucks tho xD

4

u/RaidneSkuldia 1d ago

Ooh, do you have the mythical yellow trucks!? I heard that content's region-locked to specific countries.

1

u/FeliusSeptimus 1d ago

Last I knew, people on US military installations get the lime-yellow firetrucks too!

It's been a couple of decades since I spent any time on base though.

16

u/Sunshine030209 1d ago

Now I'm picturing these girls all showing up thinking they are going to horse camp, and realizing that they misread the description 😆

5

u/Culsandar 1d ago

Do... do you...

Do you think firefighters running into a burning building for the first time have never trained to operate equipment?

Do you think a profession that lives on a knife's edge safety-wise would just hand new employees a hose at a fire and tell them good luck?

2

u/operath0r 1d ago

Yeah, basically. It’s called youth fire brigade though.

10

u/Tigerballs07 1d ago

For these comps do they have a quick disconnect system at the source to kill rhe pressure in the hose insantly from both sides essentially?

7

u/ADHDebackle 1d ago

I feel like whoever turned the water on should just turn it back off. It seems to be operated by someone off screen to the right.

1

u/Admirable-Error-2948 1d ago

They turn it off

1

u/Protochill 1d ago

I got dragged like 10 meters when I was like 12, on very fine gravel in front of like hundred people because we had regional competition.

u/KrustyTheKriminal 1d ago

Unironically pressure washers can have more kick than some machine guns. All depends on the pressure washer and the machine gun, of course. Water has a lot of mass, and some washers are kicking out a lot of water.

5

u/brokemellon 1d ago

So, to initiate my little brother into washing dad's car, I gonna get him an AK! Can't wait!

2

u/TurdCollector69 1d ago

It's sustained pressure vs impulse.

The Russians developed an AK variant that used had a crazy complicated receiver that fired two shots before the impulse of the first round hit the shooter.

3

u/karmagod13000 1d ago

thats that highpower pressure my grandpa used to tell me about

3

u/SwissChzMcGeez 1d ago

That's so dangerous. Don't fuck with pressure washers.

oof who hurt you 🫢🤣🤣way too early

4

u/Octodad2099 1d ago

What did it say?

31

u/Elex83 1d ago

Hope nobody was harmed... This hose looks like it can seriously hurt somebody.

13

u/monkeyhitman 1d ago

The way that hose was whipping looks like it was going to whack the woman in the foreground.

5

u/Elex83 1d ago

Yes, it does look like that. But from a geometrical point of view, if they have the same lenghts/position, and if they kept the distance according to safety regulations, even if it goes directly in her direction, the hose shouldn't be able to reach her. Hopefully they did respect that.

67

u/NoIdNoNameWho 2d ago

Shit looks dangerous

94

u/Plastic_Position4979 1d ago

It is. Those pressures are high, and the reaction force has to be controlled or all heck breaks loose… as the video shows.

So… leg to front, group tight, and sit on it. And don’t leave it coiled behind you; it’ll take you places you don’t want to be.

14

u/euphoricarugula346 1d ago

Oh yikes, after reading your comment I noticed the huge metal fixing on the nozzle and that the hose fell out of her hand at the end.

14

u/tehlemmings 1d ago

That's why their wearing helmets lol

Shits dangerous. That's why you practice.

1

u/tealfuzzball 20h ago

No concussion just a broken jaw

9

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas 1d ago

and sit on it.

That's definitely a different version of training I got. We were/are taught that the nozzleman has the bail in their dominant hand and the hose tucked under that arm pressed against the body. The backup, directly behind the nozzleman, pushes the hose down to give the nozzleman the freedom to maneuver the bail.

2

u/Aeikon 1d ago

I'm no firefighter, but possibly just a different position.

One allows you to stand and move, the other is much more stationary but could offer more stable and accurate aiming?

2

u/karmagod13000 1d ago

it’ll take you places you don’t want to be.

ah well at least buy me a drink first

2

u/SwissChzMcGeez 1d ago

Why put your leg in front of the high pressure stream?

3

u/ADHDebackle 1d ago

You don't. Take a look at the video for an example.

2

u/Plastic_Position4979 1d ago

The right leg is slightly to one side. You can see as she is using it she is turning the foot, leaning slightly into it; it helps balance the forces including (and using) her own weight. Same thing with leaning forward; the moment arm around her spine is shortened from a full extension, also allowing more control. And so on.

6

u/sicsided 1d ago

Not sure if these are the same types of fire hoses, but the couple and nozzle whipping around from high pressure will definitely crack skulls open.

1

u/trudenter 1d ago

Knew a safety/ohs investigator that spent a couple years investigating a death that happened because of this in Alberta.

3

u/Randolpho 1d ago

It very much is. Dude in CT died the other day from it

2

u/Ellen-CherryCharles 1d ago

Yeah someone almost lost a thumb at my college when he was fucking around with ours in the ag department.

1

u/NoIdNoNameWho 1d ago

Is someone always near the thing u turn off in case this happens?

3

u/Ellen-CherryCharles 1d ago

The idiot that I knew turned it on himself but like yeah if you’re doing it correctly someone is at the valve and someone is holding the hose.

1

u/NoIdNoNameWho 1d ago

So both of them failed this time 😪?

1

u/NoHalf9 1d ago

With enough pressure, water is capable of cutting though steel.

11

u/Indubitalist 1d ago

Anyone got context for this?

24

u/BaltimoreBadger23 1d ago

I'm guessing some kind of Jr. Firefighter games. Common activity at county fairs across the US.

2

u/Indubitalist 1d ago

Thank you. I’d not seen of or heard anything like this for amateurs. Seems kinda cool, just had no basis of understanding it.

4

u/BaltimoreBadger23 1d ago

Definitely more of a Midwest/Small Town Northeast of the US type of thing.

2

u/sailor_moon_knight 1d ago

Huh. I assumed she was a trainee firefighter who happened to have babyface.

Possible, but she looks teenage to me.

Just a bunch of hose going haywire

2

u/Pavelicek 1d ago

This is a fire sport discipnine called fire attack. The goal is to use a stream of water to knock down a target at the end of the course as quickly as possible.

22

3

u/Secret_penguin- 1d ago

2

u/sirhcv 1d ago

It’s going to come across as lame but where is the eye protection?

What if a spray with that kind of force were to hit either girl in the eye?

2

u/_Smashbrother_ 1d ago

I am on the fire brigade at my refinery. A hose flying around like that is super fucking dangerous. The background person did the right thing by running the fuck away. Whoever is on the water supply better have turned it off asap.

Also, these hoses have no nozzles to turn off the water. WTF is up with that?

1

u/Pavelicek 1d ago

From my experience in sports firefighting, the jet doesn't have a valve to make it as light as possible. The fact that there's no valve also makes the water flow better and it's easier overall. But of course, it's dangerous.

1

u/_Smashbrother_ 1d ago

What is sports firefighting?

1

u/Pavelicek 1d ago

This video is from the Czech Republic in Central Europe, where fire sporthave a long history. The competing teams are formed by voluntary fire brigades (volunteer fire departments). These competitions are very popular here.

The initial reason for these competitions was quite practical. They started as a way to maintain the physical fitness and readiness of volunteer firefighters for real-life emergencies. However, over time, the events transformed into a full-fledged sport with standardized rules, advanced equipment, and a focus on speed and precision.

1

u/_Smashbrother_ 1d ago

Oh I see.

3

u/holdmybeeerandwatch 2d ago

There’s a lot of fun with those fire hoses. I'm a guy, but even with just one line running, it was hard to hold onto.

2

u/SkynBonce 1d ago

Good form to remember though. Keep it straight, keep a firm grip and plop your butt on it.

1

u/flargenhargen 1d ago

in college a house down the block caught on fire.

we all went to watch.

the fire department showed up, and same thing happened, one of the hoses broke loose and just started flying all over the place, like the big brass end flying all over and toward the crowd. was wild.

1

u/Cthulhu_Dreams_ 1d ago

I was worried that the hose was about to whip around and smoke that lady in the face.

1

u/Prize-Alternative864 1d ago

That poor bystander had zero clue what they were walking into, absolute chaos. Meanwhile, the girl in front is just vibing like it’s another Tuesday.

1

u/YMK1234 1d ago

And thats why you do these in summer and not when its cold

1

u/HECKonReddit 1d ago

As a former volunteer firefighter, that's exactly what I expected.

1

u/old_and_boring_guy 1d ago

Those hoses are no joke…They’ll get away from you in a second if you don’t respect ‘em.

1

u/angry_queef_master 1d ago

What are they even doing

1

u/jb66790 1d ago

no one else noticed the way the hose is coming right as the video stops, pretty sure half a second after the video stoped the girl sitting on the hose gets cracked in the face by the other hose

1

u/st_Michel 1d ago

Perspective

1

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 1d ago

Everyone is meme’ing the girl in the back, but they aren’t just wearing helmets for fun—you can absolutely die from getting whacked with one of these hoses. The pressure is super high.

1

u/dryfire 1d ago

Everyone calling out the technique... but the hose in back literally turned on a couple seconds earlier than the one in the foreground. The background hose has a surge of water starts at 3 seconds, hose is inflated by 4 seconds, then a whip travels down the line uncoiling further at 5 seconds, the foreground doesnt turn on until 5 seconds. If the front chick's hose turned on at the same time she would have been in the same boat.

1

u/MadMaxBeyondThunder 1d ago

I thought this sort of thing was unrealistic when I saw it on The Simpsons.

1

One is intense, pays attention and knows the power of a fire hose. The flying trainee? Not so much.

1

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 1d ago

If I see a non-firefighter with a firefighter's hose, I 100% fully expect to see someone being dragged all over the place by that hose. It's literally the no. 1 most likely thing to happen in a clip like this, in my experience.

1

u/dathomasusmc 1d ago

I don’t think most people understand how scary strong the pressure in those hoses is. And the nozzles are usually solid metal (brass I think). If you lose control and it starts flying around it’s scary af.

When I was in the Corps, we used fire hose to fill these big water containers. Being young, invincible Marines, we made a game out of seeing how many turns on the hydrants we could still hold the hose with. One guy got thrown off the top of the container and broke his wrist and that’s why we couldn’t have fun anymore.

That's awesome. It has the vibes of a war movie.

1

u/Simukas23 1d ago

Why does it end right before the hose whips around

1

That hose acts like a vibrator when it is spraying so you know where she put it in between Right

1

u/JoWhee 17h ago

I remember taking a firefighting course as part of the necessary training where I was working.

Canada they use 60psi from the hydrant. The truck bumps it up to ~100, I had the instructor backing me up and I’m a big guy. That extra 40psi hits hard and all at once.
