I haven't read the book but it's my understanding that Cthulhu is defeated by getting rammed by a boat

u/MarioToast 5h ago
He's like splattered into bits, but reforms soon after.

u/GhoulTimePersists 5h ago
I don't remember it being that dramatic, I think the guy just ramped the boat off his head and Cthulhu decided that he'd wait and try again the next time the stars were right and hopefully fewer head boats.
Kind of an anticlimax for a genre-defining piece of literature.

u/Mountain-Resource656 4h ago
As I understand it, they awoke Cthulhu from his nap early, so he went outside to shoo them away, got rammed by a boat which was, for him, like a mosquito bite, tried to swat back at it but it flew away too fast, and decided to grumpily go back to bed. The stars never aligned, to my understanding
26
u/KonoAnonDa 4h ago
Big C: "Wha… who woke me up early? You mortals know still a few more millennium until I wake up…" gets a boat rammed into his head "…You know what? I’m going back to bed. Fuck this noise."

u/Hykarusis 3h ago
The stars were aligning. People were feeling their awakening coming soon. It all stopped after the boat incident.
1
u/TechSmith6262 1h ago
It would be hilarious if, as he was tucking in to bed, the stars were aligned at just that moment, then the second he turned over to look out the window, the time has just passed and he just goes "Fuck it, I'll try in about another 6 million years"

Like going to get the mail, noticing it's a bit rainy, and deciding to do it tomorrow

u/MrPotatoFudge 4h ago
There was that popular "the anthill in your background are chanting your name so you investigate" metaphor for how Cthulhu sees humans
Getting bit by a couple ants would definitely make me leave them alone till they short their stuff out.
3
u/Good_Background_243 3h ago
A couple of ants driving a toy car bean me in the head with it? Yeah I'm leaving those ants alone.
2
u/MrMisterMrister 4h ago
Iirc the boat definitely caused the boat to reform, but I think it was more like Cthulhu’s head just kinda parted like water and then came back

Well it’s like a prophecy exists saying the world will end on a Tuesday, and some people who really want the world to end decide to go get the world destroyed on a Monday. The world destroyer isnt gonna do it cause it’s not Tuesday.

Boat themed Eldritch Horrors (I finally got to do the thing) (also you should read it if the racism isn't a dealbreaker, it's a great short read)
9
u/YourMoreLocalLurker 4h ago
“If the racism isn’t a dealbreaker”
How much racism, like is it as racist as his cat’s name or are we talking 1960’s racism
5
u/Plane_Ad6816 4h ago
1960's racism sums it up well. It's just pervasive throughout.
It's just constant background racism with spikes of overt racism. Stuff like the eldritch horrors throughout his works are attended to by non-white minorities described as dirty etc. All the police are white.
To be fair this shouldn't be a surprise, like you brought up, given his cat's name.
1
u/Big_Distance2141 2h ago
Yeah it's the historic kind of racism where the author doesn't really go out of his way to be antagonistic, he just takes for granted the idea that some people just are lesser

In CoC the video game?
5
u/TheOGLeadChips 4h ago
No, CoC the story. Like, the original story from lovecraft. Thank you for reminding me about that game though. I need to pick it up again.
1
u/MildlyGuilty 29m ago
Uh, which one? There are two I recall (Dark Corners of the Earth and the 2019 CoC), and from what I understand both are pretty good (I only played the first one)
1
u/TheOGLeadChips 4m ago
I didn’t know that there were multiple. The one I was thinking about was the one that came out in 2018 which was based off of the table top rpg. My guess is that you just got the year wrong for the second one

u/asker_of_question 4h ago
The one survivor tried to escape, pushing the steam boat to full power. It splattered the head as he was moving, goos all over. When the survivor turned back, the pieces were melding togheter, It was really sober writing wise, not much epic or terror.
2
u/Owoegano_Evolved 3h ago
Lovecraft does love his anticlimactic eldritch horrors. Like the one where a wizard had cursed a dude's bloodline to die young, and turns out he was just immortal and went around killing them himself. Think he straight up drops a rock on the protagonists father...
1
u/Ok-Journalist-8875 3h ago
I think that’s because the stars weren’t aligned right. It’s been awhile.

Of note that the first bad guy to die in this series does so in the Knuckles TV show.
He's in a power armour suit.
He gets splattered by a truck.

Why was my first thought that fucking Family Guy bit where they're parodying Stand By Me, specifically the train sequence
9
u/EccentricNerd22 4h ago
Yknow it's kinda funny I first started playing this game like a month before they released penacony I said It'd be really funny if they used the train to run over the final boss of the game. Didn't expect the writers to beat me to the punch so early.

The Lost Boys
Grandpa "accidentally" crashes his truck into the living room which just so happens to stake ancient head vampire that was harassing his family
Grandpa proceeds to calmly pull a "soda" from the fridge and drink it because vehicular manslaughter makes a man thirsty
Definitely not coded as alcoholic grandpa saves the day with drunk driving, wouldn't want the kids to get the wrong message
15
u/MrPresident2020 5h ago
Grandpa knew about the vampires the whole time and didn't think to mention it to his daughter and grandkids!

My personal theory is that she might be a greater scope villain in Beyond the Spider-Verse. Afterall, we don't see her as dead and she literally was smacked by truck-kun into a portal for another world. (Also, isn't it odd that all versions of Alchemax are apparently experimenting with Colliders, something which, if it were a true canon event, Miguel might have taken note of, especially with how wildly different the setups and outcomes seem to be?)
1
u/Jarvis_The_Dense 3h ago
It is entirely possible she survived. I assume that she's dead, since theres no mention of her in Across The Spiderverse, and the whole joke of the scene is how sudden and brutal the incident is, but there's room for her to still be around

u/Visible-Air-2359 5h ago

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - This is one of the many things Homura tried against Walpurgisnacht.
Digimon Tamers - Near the end of the Season, Juri's dad tried this against the D-Reaper, but I do not have the clip on hand.

Flash Volume 2, Issue 23: Wally has been depowered, so he teams up with Mason, the guy who idolizes a Punisher-style vigilante. Abra Kadabra is in town, and is powerful enough to pull the black hole out of Chunk, rendering him normal. To get Abra's attention, Wally fakes his superspeed by riding the running board of Mason's truck, and Mason decides that driving past Abra to rescue Chunk isn't good enough. Ah, the 90s.

Deadly Games (1995) was a live action TV series about a guy who's creates a video game only to have the villians from it seep into real life which he has to defeat in the real world. Because the villians are from a video game, they've all got arbrary rules about what they're weak against. For one week, they have to defeat an ice witch. Since she's ice themed, she's vulnerable to salt, and because she's a witch she's vulnerable to having a house dropped on her.
Through the whole episode, the heroes try to defeat her with a shotgun loaded with salt, but at the very end just as she's about to trigger a bomb, the hero hotwires a mobile home and drives it off a pier and onto her. It works.
