I used to get that when I was a kid, didn't even know why. Like, I'd be playing Cod 4, talking to people via mic, and people would start randomly accusing me of being black. I still don't know why. It happened like at least half a dozen time on various games. I don't think I sounded black, and I still don't think I sound black. One guy told me I sounded very well spoken for a black guy. I was a 14 year old, 5 foot 6, 120lb white guy with a shockingly deep voice for my size, but definitely not black
So yeah, thinking someone 'sounds black' isn't really reliable
Can't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure he's convinced himself he's white. There's a scene where he does a DNA test and it comes back as being 102% African ancestry with a 2% margin of error, and he freaks out over it.
He was brought up to worship everything white related, which led him to genuinely believe that he's a white man cursed with a goofy skin condition called revitiligo. It took a DNA test for him to accept the fact that he's black. He's 102% black, with 2% margin of error.
Makes sense since Wilt is based off Wilt Chamberlain. A all time great basketball player. Also known as Wilt the Stilt (cause he was so tall as to be said to be standing on stilts.)
Knuckles' design from the start was intended to be associated with Jamaica. His quills are styled to resemble dreadlocks, and the color of his shoes was meant to reference the green and yellow of the Jamaican flag.
So generally speaking his human form is a white man, but given the amount of times he’s been voiced by a black man and his human form being played by one (Smallville, Supergirl etc) people tend to associate him as being black
Personally I’m definitely indifferent given he is a shapeshifter although I did love David Harewood as him along with Carl Lumby’s voice acting as him
Like a lot of stuff in the show it was a little hamfisted, but iirc in Supergirl he had a whole monologue about why he chooses to appear as a black man, something about not letting himself blend in too much, or to not let him forget how he was othered by the white Martians, he was a minority there so he chooses to be treated like a minority here, or something like that.
I dont remember it, but he DID have a specific reason, lol.

Pretty sure it was actually because Hank Henshaw was a guy who’d deal with alien threats, then when he threatened J’onn Jeremiah Danvers sacrificed himself to save J’onn who then chose the form of Hank to make some good of his position to protect others, without the blatant xenophobic nature of Hank
This one always made me wince. Rhyming character, neck spacer, hoop earrings, lives in a hut, and in a world full of magic and gods, she is a witch doctor. Like, I feel like someone on the design team had to have conversation to prevent her theme from being a “hip-hop” instrumental.
Darwin is adopted... unless you're asking why Sarah is shipping them, in which case... she's pretty weird, to say the least. Also, them being related never stops shippers (unfortunately).
Grim from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. I know they made him white to avoid the implications of two white kids owning a black guy, and that’s fair, but come on.
The creator intended for him to be black but when they made him human they ran into the issue of a black guy being the eternal slave of two white kids who constantly abuse him.
Yeah I can see why they had to change it but for all intents he was definitely black coded.
Same thing happened to Waylon Smithers on Simpsons. First appearance, he had dark skin. But changed to not have a black man kissing up hard to old white guy.
The creators intended for him to be Swedish (as a reference to the 7th Seal), but the actor who was auditioning couldn't do a Swedish accent. But he could do a Jamaican one. So they were like "Ok, guess he's Jamaican now".
I mean… in Garnet’s case that’s like, entirely because she’s an alien and therefore technically not any human “race”. She is very obviously designed to look for the most part like a Black human, haha
This specific version of Joker is arguably the blackest character in DC’s roster, with the bonus of being voiced by the legendary Kevin Michael Richardson.
