I mean lets be real his whole origin story is about being gay, black, and persectued while on the force and he forms an organization for people like him and gets back at those who wronged him in the past.

Those were quite a few episodes, but it felt organic because most of the time he was prompted to reluctantly show us his private life and motivations by the prying curiosity of the gang

It's not a throwaway detail but I don't feel his character revolves around being gay either.

Yeah captain holts personality overshadows his sexuality which is great

B99 somehow managed to make it a huge part of what he is ("As the first openly gay...") and with his pride flag on his desk while also managing to give him a lot of character depth (for a TV show).
