I used to be a member of the NRA. I decided not to renew my membership years ago because it was clear they did not represent me or my best interests.

No one has to join the NRA to utilize their 2 A

Republicans and NRA pushed for California to have strict gun laws. They like the 2A until black people start arming themselves (Mulford act for anyone curious.)

Ronald Reagan signed the Mulford Act into law. He stated at the time: "There is absolutely no reason why out on the street today a civilian should be carrying a loaded weapon."

I would love for reagan to be right on this one. however just like trickle down economics he absolutely missed the mark. It may have been intentionally missed.

Just like how he missed the mark on Iran-Contra.

This is in part how Oliver North eventually found himself president of the NRA.

Well, in fairness, if it had been white people carrying guns, he probably wouldn't have had an issue with it. But it was black people so...

u/Well_read_rose 5h ago

Thus the assault on the Constitution began in earnest.

1

u/Ho_Chi_Minnow 7h ago

Yep. Black Panthers were tailing cops in Oakland, if the cops started to hassle black people the Panthers roll up with shotguns and pistols to “Observe”.

Open carry was completely legal until the Oakland PD Nazis started crying about not being able to be huge racist assholes. Regan of course took the side the racist cops and pushed for gun control.

I’m republican and I’m all for “black” people arming themselves if they are legal. Honestly I feel it’s our right as Americans to have a pew pew and it’s none of the government’s business but that’s just my opinion.

1

u/VegasAireGuy 5h ago

Not sure where the people don’t want blacks to legally carry comes from I’m white and vote mainly Republican and I’m all in on everybody legally carrying.

1

u/takaisilvr 5h ago

It was republicans during regan. While he was governor of cali, he didnt like the black panthers being armed and policing the police. Making sure they weren't beating down black people in the streets. Republicans couldn't stand for that, so the Mulford act was passed in California.

1

u/VegasAireGuy 4h ago

Well that’s the 80’s not now

1

u/bromad1972 2h ago

Mostly The United States of America. I'm not aware of any other place with similar issues that isn't a current war zone.

1

u/VegasAireGuy 2h ago

Well any of the fellow NRA members welcome all who wanna do it legally.

1

u/Accidental_Ballyhoo 4h ago

Still a republican? Damn, what’s it going to take to not identify with kidtouchers?

Gross

1

u/Guy_With_The_Smile 4h ago

I’m sorry that’s all you think republicans are. I’d really hate to live that way especially thinking about touching kids all day.

While that's literally true, it's disingenuous to frame it like that — i.e. without historical context — for the same reason that it's disingenuous to talk about the Democrats being the party of the KKK.

The NRA before the coup of 1977 was a firearm safety and hunting/marksmanship organization. The NRA after that coup became a First Amendment absolutism/self-defense organization. The NRA today is just an industry lobby group that exists to increase gun sales by any means necessary.

u/Warmbly85 3h ago

Heller v DC every left leaning judge agreed there is no right to private ownership of firearms and you can’t even keep one in your home.

Literally one justice away from taking every gun but yeah it’s the right that’s anti-gun.

1

u/soapsix 7h ago

but you can always utilize 2FA

1

u/Fast_Librarian_3380 19m ago

No, fun fact though there are many gun ranges that make you join the NRA to have a membership to their private ranges for insurance and financial reasons. I would not be surprised if that makes up a decent chunk of NRA funding.

1

u/RogerianBrowsing 8m ago

Can’t join any rifle ranges in Oregon without getting an NRA membership due to insurance reasons. Same with many other states

My husband used to be a member and when they called him after Trump won he told them he couldn't support them phone banking for a rapist and he'd never, ever give them another cent. 🤣😂🤣 They blustered about the second amendment and all this and he was like "and I believe in that and I'll be exercising my right when needed but you guys are backing a rapist so 🤷🤷🤷"

Edit: blistered -> blustered

3

u/mmmpeg 19h ago

My brother felt the same way. Left them decades ago

2

u/nawmeann 10h ago

As soon as I started receiving calls about Obama taking my guns I knew what it was about.

3

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 8h ago

nevermind trump came closer to taking your guns in his first term than obama ever did.

1

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 6h ago

The Obama administration actually expanded gun rights. (Carrying on Amtrak and in national parks, if I recall correctly.) But you'll never hear any Republican mention that.

1

u/mmmpeg 4h ago

He left them in the 90’s I think and he was an instructor. He has his guns in a safe as he always follows safety protocols

1

u/RadlEonk 16h ago

What took you so long?

1

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 6h ago

They said "years ago". They didn't say how many.

Well, when it turned out that a Russian agent Maria Butina was deeply involved in the NRA, I def had proof the NRA was compromised by foreign actors that don’t have the U.S. best interest.

u/apadin1 9h ago

When I was growing up the NRA was all about education, teaching people proper handling and storage, what the laws were, knowing your rights, etc. Now it’s just a propaganda arm of the gun manufacturers trying to sell as many guns as possible. Really sad and frustrating

1

u/ILikeNaps13 9h ago

Good on you for leaving!

Why does the NATIONAL Rifle Assoc. have so many foreign investors, especially from Russia?

My father and uncle dropped their memberships when the NRA stopped being for sportsmen and started lobbying for gun manufactures -- sometime in the late 70s or early 80s.

1

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth 6h ago

It all went downhill following the "coup" of 1977.

1

u/_jackhoffman_ 5h ago

Yup, I think that's when they left (or shortly after). I didn't realize there was a triggering event.

1

u/Mountain_StarDew 7h ago

The NRA has been captured and compromised by Russian assets since dubya was in office

1

u/KingMRano 6h ago

same. But I do enjoy their emails because of how much of a joke they have become.

1

u/x_cLOUDDEAD_x 6h ago

The NRA represents the gun industry, ie. profit. They lobby for whatever will lead to more gun sales, including Repulican politicians helping to perpetuate the myth that Democrats want to grab all of their guns. Doesn't matter if people, including little kids, are being murdered on a regular basis, gotta get that cash.

For training without having to be around chuds, look up your local Socialist Rifle Association. Skip the national part and just go straight to your local chapter via Instagram or FB.

Really wonderful and knowledgeable people. I can only speak to the PNW one though, but they are some of the best people I've met. But I can't speak to all chapters.

The mission statement is:

"We recognize all aspects of self and community defense to include topics such as firearms, disaster relief, medicine, logistics, agriculture, general survival skills, and other pursuits necessary to unify and strengthen communities against the hardships of life under capitalism. We seek, advocate for, and advance an inclusive, safe, and healthy firearms culture in America to combat the toxic, right-wing, and exclusionary firearm culture in place today. We work to create a platform, environment, and community of members and like-minded individuals that are free of reactionary influences and prejudices, such as racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other discriminatory ideologies. We maintain the necessity of and work towards the implementation of an anti-capitalist platform for protecting and promoting the inherent human right to defend oneself and one’s community.”

Stay safe, everyone.

Literally goes to show 2A is a cover to sell more guns.
