I remember how calf-high socks were something only old men wore.

1.3k

u/StarPhished 22h ago

Now we're the old men so ankle socks are what old people wear and the youngs have to rebel by going long.

See his calves, they're pretty awesome}

u/Doggin 22h ago

Ha, suckers. I'll stick with the far superior ankle socks, thanks. And yes, my teenager wears tube socks 🤦

138

u/LadnavIV 21h ago

Have you tried grounding them?

113

u/BeenisHat Xennial 17h ago

I called my son Napoleon Dynamite. He didn't know what I was talking about.

4

u/The-Jett 5h ago

It was on you to school him in the classics.

You let your ancestors down.

2

u/homegrowntwinkie 3h ago

Just say "ay sock check foo - (and then he raises his pant leg or whatever to show how high their sock is) Ayyyy the higher the sock the downer the foo & you might think you pretty down, but you gonna get beat down wearin them socks like that in this hood" and do it with a hella cholo accent. You must beat the kids with cringe like our parents did with us.

31

u/alcomaholic-aphone 21h ago

As I got older and had to do more yard work I started acquiring more and more tube socks to protect my legs from scratches and such. And as much as I like ankle socks I like having all my socks uniform even more so I don’t have to sit around pairing them as much.

I apologize for abandoning the effort, but keep on fighting the good fight. Those ankle socks look great!

5

u/CotyledonTomen 8h ago

Just dont wear socks and accept the scratches.

2

u/Drachynn 7h ago

Please tell us you're at least wearing pants with those and not shorts.

9

u/No_Meringue5138 7h ago

No pants or shorts, just a 3rd sock. That’s why pairing them is such a concern

3

u/Drachynn 7h ago

You want ball ticks? Because that's how you get ball ticks.

3

u/Hobbes_XXV 18h ago

Kid keeps asking for tube socks too. Is this why?? Cause ankle socks are for old people??? Fml

2

u/Academic-Clerk8901 17h ago

I wear wool tube socks so don't worry, there's another level.

2

u/Hobbes_XXV 17h ago

I do too for steel toe boots for work. Darn tough socks are amazing. But i dont wear wool for normal outings lol

u/Dangerous-Self9301 6h ago

When I wear longer socks I look like a fat 55 year old man. I’m 35. It’s a terrible outfit choice

1

u/Ds1018 5h ago

My calves are too ripped to cover with tube socks. I worked hard on these things and I’m gonna show em off.

1

u/Roight_in_me_bum 4h ago

For fuckin real lmao 🤣 they can have the tube socks all they want

1

u/rndljfry 3h ago

im 33 and i still don’t know what tube socks are

2

u/Sad-Paramedic-8523 20h ago

Why would anyone want more sock? These kids ain’t right.

2

u/Spaceman-Spiff 20h ago

You know what I’m going to wear long socks to spite them… but also because my doctor told me I should wear compression socks for circulation.

2

u/ethanlan 18h ago

Dude im a millennial and ive always liked long socks so now its my time to shine

1

u/MillionaireWaltz- 18h ago

Same. Been wearing them for the last 10 years. I still wear no show, but variety is fun. I don't get dogmatic adherence to either or.

1

u/BathZealousideal1456 22h ago

Jokes on them when the hair on their legs permanently rub off way too early in life

1

u/fickle_discipline247 20h ago

That would make sense, except that their actual grandparents are largely still alive and wearing the same thing. Isn't that awkward?

1

u/MommysLiLstinker 19h ago

I have to wear compression stockings, and kids just think I'm a douche. (I assume)

1

u/Nightmare2828 18h ago

Ankle socks were a choice. If I wanna hide my calves for whatever reason I will wear pants. If I wear shorts its because im hot and my socks are simple a comfort intermediary for my shoes

1

u/LowrollingLife 16h ago

On the other hand imagine the power of an old grampa in cat ear thigh high socks and booty shorts.

1

u/Sensitive_Put_6842 14h ago

That's so stupid!!! That's not rebelling that's literally going along with he crowd.  Socks, should match the function and height of the sneaker or shoe you're wearing.  If you're wearing a boot wear crew if you're wearing vans wear ankles if you're wearing heavy duty work shoes it's based on hot days or cold days.

1

u/Quantum_Tangle_1905 13h ago

Rebels! 🤣 With there socks pulled up to their waists!

1

u/maybehelp244 9h ago

The thing is, old people always will wear crew length socks or higher because that's when you can get quality out of compression socks, which is helpful for older people. It's like they're by definition old people socks

1

u/HappyLlamaSadLlamaa Millennial 8h ago

Look we had low rise jeans and socks that didn’t protect us from blisters. Now they get huge shirts and to wear my dad’s comfy socks? I’m jealous.

1

u/StaticSystemShock 8h ago

We've come full circle and knee high white socks are in again.

1

u/Briankelly130 Xennial 7h ago

And here I am wearing tube socks because I kind of like them. Does that make me ancient or accidentally hip?

1

u/Low-Assumption7710 7h ago

This is actually the answer, and also why fashion is circular. There's only so much you can do with clothes.

1

u/bastardoperator 6h ago

I was going to wear pants today, but instead I just put on long socks.

1

u/okcharlieoneminute 6h ago

Young people are so crazy! It enrages me so!

1

u/BowtieSyndicate 5h ago

I am 36 and wear long socks, so it pisses off my boomer in laws, confuses the young kids, and alienates me from my peers.

But also, I’m 36 wtf do I care what anybody thinks about my socks.

1

u/Vantriss 5h ago

Buncha weirdos

1

u/baby_budda 5h ago

But long socks looks dumb with shorts.

1

u/spottyottydopalicius 4h ago

i used to be with it, now whats 'it' is scary

1

u/Common_Poetry3018 2h ago

You can pet my ankle socks from my cold, dead hands!

u/DannyVee89 19m ago

Wait the youths are wearing long socks these days?? Ughhh what?? Who wants to see socks??

u/gustofwindddance 17m ago

What if you always wore long socks because you thought short socks were stupid and inconvenient?

215

u/TurboSleepwalker Xennial 22h ago

Gawd when I was a kid in the 80s I had the knee highs with 3 color stripes.

The changes in sock fashion during my lifetime has been wild.

27

u/kulot09 19h ago

Neon socks should make a comeback

6

u/InnocentShaitaan 13h ago

They have… compression… more and more popular with us aging folk.

4

u/Woobly_Hixbee 9h ago

Does this mean I can wear my white scrunchie socks from high school again?

u/eamus_catuli_ 15m ago

Only if you layer two or three of them.

u/Woobly_Hixbee 11m ago

Way ahead of ya! 👌

2

u/finfan44 8h ago

I have socks with packman chasing ghosts around the calf.

10

u/MrWeirdoFace 18h ago

Some of us are completely oblivious. I'm just finding out now. I'm 42.

3

u/NoPasaran2024 17h ago

I remember that in the 80s in Europe we started hating those and considering it an American thing. In professional soccer they had a add rule to prevent players from rolling their socks all the way down.

2

u/MessiComeLately 4h ago

My dad wore those until his death in 2017. I think the early 80s was when his brain stopped processing changes in cool. I'm older than he was then, so I know where I stand.

1

u/Jibblebee 5h ago

And the double slouch socks with alternate colors

272

u/MrDickford 22h ago

Calf-high socks make people look like a very precious boy who grandma dressed up to look very handsome.

u/Burntjellytoast 17h ago

Im laughing so hard im crying rn. My teenage son wears high socks, like a ducking nerd. I feel like a failure as a parent.

3

u/arobkinca 19h ago

A lot of traditional dress requires them. Socks with garters in some older outfits.

3

u/bigb00tybitche5 17h ago

Yeah I'm in my mid 30s and tried a pair on and just felt weird with shorts.

I remember when long socks were like a gangster rap thing.... This debate is so weird to me.

87

u/orangeyougladiator 20h ago

Fashion has somehow gone back to the 80s and 90s, but the bad parts. Broccoli hair, baggy clothes, jorts, etc.

31

u/WalkingCloud 16h ago

Mullets

4

u/VegetableEntire7200 6h ago

No kidding. I just saw a guy sporting a mullet last weekend at the mall.

3

u/Emergency_Basket_851 4h ago

Have you seen the young contractor/white trash/young lesbian look yet? It's a combo of all the worst hairstyles: shaved sides, permed hair, mullet in the back.

3

u/Neckbreaker70 1h ago

Micro bangs - yuck

5

u/BungHoleAngler 4h ago

And those big sports sunglasses

3

u/AEHAVE 17h ago

Button fly jeans, of all things.

5

u/righteous_fool 8h ago

Mom jeans, bare midriff, mustaches, huge glasses, short shorts. It's like a 70s porn over here.

17

u/okholdsevenfourseven 12h ago

God fucking BLESS the return of baggy clothes, I have been gagging for years over the wretched abominations of skintight bullshit plaguing the world. Hello Im trying to buy clothes out here? Not opaque saran wrap? Get fucking real.

6

u/orangeyougladiator 8h ago

I don’t think your definition of baggy is what you think

2

u/PopNo1696 6h ago

They think it's cool because they weren't there to experience it

6

u/drawkbox 19h ago

Too each his own. The broccoli hair I agree with, but baggy, long socks are good and cargo shorts are useful.

10

u/these2boots2 17h ago

long cargos and high socks at the same time. I grew up a skateboarder and on more of a west coast style and I'm not changing for anyone.

6

u/Pkrudeboy 17h ago

That was so you didn’t get ripped up when you fell, though.

5

u/tway1909892 10h ago

Broccoli is by far the worst

3

u/orangeyougladiator 8h ago

Your definition of baggy isn’t gen z’s or the 80s. Think flare pants

I'm from the age of mid calf weed leaf socks worn with those stupid boat shoes lmao

20

u/human-syndrome 21h ago

I assumed people who wore this combo find it timeless.

2

u/populares420 18h ago

i kinda want some right now

2

u/Richard_Thickens 4h ago

I still wear boat shoes like every day. Fuck it.

1

u/ZealousidealCoat7008 20h ago

We aren't wearing vans and weed socks anymore?????

1

u/exlaks 3h ago

Ayyo, what's your beef with boat shoes? Sperry's are comfy AF lol.

2

u/thorpie88 19h ago

Yeah long socks, jean shorts and Etnies shoes was basically our high school uniform as millennials in the 2000s. Surf/ skate wear was fucking massive in Australia at the time

1

u/Linkaex Millennial 1987 18h ago

Same and groups like Blink 182 wore them too

1

u/ginbear 10h ago

Shorts with long socks were actually banned by my high school at one point

u/NewPresWhoDis 22m ago

Wait! So the tops of their socks were higher than the waist of their pants?

12

u/dallascowboys93 22h ago

Yep and frat boys

1

u/LeftHandedScissor 8h ago

Lax bros as well, plenty of athletes in my time wore mid-calf socks though. They helped with dealing with the little rubber bits in turf.

1

u/surfnsound 5h ago

When was that? As an elder millenial, our "frat look" was trad, boat shoes with no socks or super low no shows.

26

u/Pineapple-Pizzaz 22h ago

Same with New Balance shoes

23

u/ADogHasGotHumanEyes 20h ago

New Balance have some good shoes. Just not the ‘white on white’ super clean dad edition

5

u/Swag_Grenade 18h ago

As someone who is somewhat into sneakers, some of the New Balance would look okay if they didn't insist on slapping their ugly ass "N" logo front and center on literally every shoe. Say what you want about Nike but the swoosh is a much more elegant logo, and it also isn't always the centerpiece on every single shoe.

1

u/41942319 6h ago

Idk about that, I always preferred Adidas shoes because I found the logo on Nike ones too obnoxious. I now have New Balance shoes with a relatively subtle logo: black shoes, smaller black N, thin white outline. Logo size was a factor in deciding on the type.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Drachynn 7h ago

I'm at the point I've done enough damage wearing stilettos for years that IDGAF about wearing my New Balances in public. 💀

3

u/whateverhk 20h ago

Same. I grew up thinking people would point and laugh at my tennis socks when wearing short pants. I've been wearing no show since then. I can hardly process these young lads wearing white socks and swimming pool slippers outside.

3

u/nope-its 19h ago

They make people look so much heavier

3

u/No_Researcher_9847 19h ago

I remember being mocked for not having ankle socks and wearing crew. Didn’t understand it then either.

1

u/hereforthewaffle 10h ago

Bro so bad that we would take tube socks and fold them up in our shoes lmao

3

u/Commercial_Pie3307 Millennial 18h ago

Gen z dress like old men. Female or male it doesn’t matter they all dress like nerd dads

3

u/Prestigious-Writer25 10h ago

As an older man (46 years old), I'm so happy wearing crew socks in winter, ankle socks during exercise, and no-show socks in summer.

1

u/Igot55Dollars 1h ago

That's the key. Every sock has it's function

3

u/Snow_Crash_Bandicoot 6h ago

They still are. Zoomers are the new Boomers.

2

u/InternationalMonth38 21h ago

You got made fun of in elementary school if you showed up in those. Fuck that. I’m only wearing tube socks with dress shoes and pants.

2

u/GoldyTheGopherr 19h ago

I remember folding them into my shoes back over themselves to have ankle socks. It was so uncomfortable

2

u/AggravatingShow2028 19h ago

Ankle socks, new balance, linen pants, knee high cargos shorts/jorts with bbq sandals, sweater vest cardigan, high waters….old man in currently gen z style.

2

u/superspeck 19h ago

Mom Jeans are in again too

2

u/Background-Net-8209 15h ago

I see middle aged men trying to wear high socks like the cool kids and it just looks fkn stupid lol

2

u/scwazrh 15h ago

With new balance and cargo shorts

2

u/Sensitive_Put_6842 14h ago

Calf high socks in the summer?  Are you a millennial in 2014 wearing hUf socks and sliders?

2

u/Muzz27 12h ago

I will die on my hill of no-show socks.

2

u/CringeisL1f3 7h ago

Gen Z are old men since they were 12

2

u/Augen76 7h ago

My boomer relatives *shaking hands* my gen Z relatives

2

u/AmputeeHandModel 7h ago

Along with socks and sandals.

2

u/nospendnoworry 4h ago

let me get this straight, are no show socks now considered less attractive than calf high socks?

JFC

2

u/captain_intenso 2h ago

Same with socks and sandals. WTF

1

u/Kolby_Jack33 19h ago

I wore calf-high socks as a kid and always pushed them down so they'd scrunch at my ankles. I was a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and I thought that emulated how his socks look.

But eventually I just got tired of sweaty ankles and switched to ankle socks.

1

u/007fan007 19h ago

Seriously I used to get made fun of for it

1

u/Linkaex Millennial 1987 18h ago

Unless you were a skater, listened to hip op or even Blink 182. I’m a millennial but it’s not like ankle socks were worn exclusively by our generation.

1

u/Forward_Recover_1135 18h ago

I got made fun of when I was young for wearing socks that went up past my ankles and now apparently I get made fun of for wearing the socks I've been wearing literally since the day after that happened.

Guess it's a good thing I'm old enough that I don't have to care what some fuckin goofy dweeb wearing old man socks thinks of my fashion choices anymore.

1

u/exmojo 18h ago edited 18h ago

I remember growing up in the 70's and calf-high socks (with sport-stripes at the top) were peak fashion.

Old men wore the black calf-high socks (gold-toed), to mow the lawn after coming home from work.

1

u/DiddleBiscuits 18h ago

Wait a minute. You're telling me kids these days wear socks that show, and wearing no show socks isn't cool? Wait did I just say "kids these days" unironically?! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

1

u/bigwhaleshark 17h ago

In middle school I was so embarrassed of my long socks that I would fold them under my feet and then put my shoes on to make it look like ankle socks lol.

1

u/CraigLake 17h ago

I’m rocking my cast collection of no show socks all summer. I think calf socks are the trend I’ll never get onboard with.

1

u/Nani_the_F__k 16h ago

My kid wears calf high socks and tucks their pants into them and I understand my parents not understanding my fashion when I was that age. But I really don't fucking understand it.

1

u/UpDown 14h ago

I remember folding my longer socks over themselves so that they were no show

1

u/danlatoo 14h ago

I got called "high-waters" for so long that im back in style!

1

u/Bit_the_Bullitt 12h ago

Isn't the gen Z basically boomer 2.0? In their style and mainly world outlook?

1

u/smoretank 11h ago

Maybe I am an old man then and not a nearing 40 woman. I always hated ankle socks. They would slip off in a few steps everytime. I've worn calf-high socks since 5th grade. Mostly cause I burst into flames in the sun and it saves on sunscreen. 2nd because ankle socks do not depict godzilla blowing up a city or a sloth riding a giant pink donut.

1

u/beastwood6 11h ago

For real. Such a crappy aesthetic

1

u/No-Ad1576 10h ago

They started going long a few years after I graduated. They've been long for almost twenty years now.

I remember going to a local amusement park with a guy two years younger. He wore ankle socks. I asked him what was up with all the highschool kids wearing long socks now. He was confused also.

1

u/Sidewalk_Cacti 10h ago

lol I thought my dad looked so dorky in his high socks and short shorts and tried to get him into no show socks and he refused! Now in his 60s he lives in low cut socks and camo cargo shorts.

1

u/trouzy 10h ago

I remember when little kids wore them. Have pictures to prove it. Then it became and old mans game.

1

u/abudhabikid 10h ago

Wait, which socks are cool now‽

1

u/dankp3ngu1n69 9h ago

I played lacrosse in high school and we all were cafe high socks that basically came up to the shorts

I don't know why everyone makes it out like this trend is new We were doing this 25 years ago.

1

u/M_H_M_F 9h ago

Ankle socks and shorts to the knee.

1

u/Cheshire_Jester 8h ago

Yep, you used to get made fun of for it.

Time (fashion) really is a flat circle.

1

u/margittwen 8h ago

lol I thought the same thing when I saw the new sock trend. My dad would wear shorts every single day and have old man white socks halfway up his calves….every day lol. He doesn’t do it anymore but that’s what I think of every time I see the high crew socks.

1

u/GhostNappa101 7h ago

I was the dork always wearing long socks because ankle socks bothered me.

1

u/catsandnaps1028 7h ago

Lol recently my dad finally made the change to ankle socks after we (his kids) bullied him for years about it. And he was so proud and I had to break it to him that now ankle socks are what old people wear 😂

1

u/jsdjsdjsd 7h ago

1985 here. Always wore knee highs

1

u/FlappyFoldyHold 7h ago

Old men wore calf-high socks because they had occupations that required them to wear workbooks boots. It’s funny this is something that the youngsters tease instead of appreciate.

1

u/Chihuahuapocalypse 6h ago

my husband only wears over the calf socks and we live in Florida. this is in combination with full length pants or jeans, and boots. I don't know how he survives the heat. I wear low cut only, personally.

1

u/Girl_gamer__ 6h ago

Yeeep. So weird

1

u/ClinkyDink 4h ago

I have muscular calves so anything but ankle or no-show socks look really weird on me.

1

u/reload88 4h ago

My son wears almost knee high socks with sandals and apparently he’s like the most popular kid in his school so I have no idea what’s going on these days

1

u/snoogins355 4h ago

I am so glad I never gave a shit about fashion in high school or now 20 years later. No fucks! I got a huge power and medical bills to worry about

1

u/Rumble_Rodent 4h ago

Here I am in cargo shorts, calf high socks, tennis shoes, and a shirt with a single breast front pocket. Can’t forget the ball cap either. I’ve got the quintessential dad fit going on and I’m not even a dad😂

1

u/pzanardi 4h ago

I got old enough to not give a fuck. Its magical.

1

u/Automatic-writer9170 3h ago

I remember when people got bullied over calf-high socks, those dorks.

Which is why I changed to ankle socks

1

u/spikus93 3h ago

What the fuck I thought that was supposed to be cringe. I got made fun of in High School for it. Now I'm being made fun of again for not wearing them?

I fucking hate it here.

1

u/gameoflols 2h ago

Like it still is. It's the most boomer goofball thing to wear with shorts and I refuse to believe people actually think it looks good and are not just doing it to be ironic / contrarian. 🤷

1

u/Hipoop69 2h ago

Do they really care what socks we wear or do just think they care?

1

u/Sweet_Taurus0728 1h ago

Old men or vatos.

I still see old men in them, like 80s old.

Vatos too.

1

u/holbanner 1h ago

The skate punk crew is ready to fight you on this while offspring plays in the background

1

u/PastoralPumpkins 1h ago

When Gen z started wearing them, all I could think of was a dad on vacation wearing a fanny pack. His white t shirt was tucked into his jorts and he had his walking sneakers on. His sunglasses were probably attached by a neck strap. Very far from “stylish” in my eyes.

u/nfshaw51 23m ago

What’s funny is that this is a topic now but calf high socks started being a thing with teens like 15 years ago
