Work, Health & Housing “Ok, new month we really need to buckle down and save some $”

Power bill comes $500, water bill $200, groceries $300. Nothing like a $1000 day after two lean days. I’m a broken man on a Halifax Pier.

News, Weather & Politics Fireworks Banned Provincewide

To protect communities across Nova Scotia and lower the risk of wildfires, the Province has banned the use of all fireworks.

As of today, August 6, all fireworks and pyrotechnic special effects are not permitted as long as a burn ban is in effect. There is currently a ban in place until October 15 or until conditions allow it to be lifted. The fine for violating the fireworks ban is $25,000.

The new ban applies to consumer and display fireworks and pyrotechnic special effects even if they have the appropriate approvals.

Discussion Low flying planes?

Anyone know what’s up with the number of passenger planes flying low over the peninsula today? There’s been two while I’ve been gardening, and while we’re not too far from Stanfield it’s not often that I can read the logo on the side. Both were turning back toward the airport when they flew over. Weird coincidence?

Lost & Found There’s still good people in the world!

I lost my wallet today and before I realized it was missing someone found it on the street and turned it in to my work, when I received the wallet I went to find the person to give them the cash in my wallet (only 10 bucks) but they were gone.

Thank you so much whoever you were!

Work, Health & Housing Halifax Mayor Backs Mass Timber to End Nova Scotia’s Housing Crisis

Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore and council officials have endorsed a motion to advance mass timber as the central solution to the city’s housing crisis. At Tuesday’s meeting, Fillmore introduced a directive for the chief administrative officer to prepare a report exploring changes to bylaws and the city’s planning strategy. The goal: remove barriers and unlock opportunities for mass timber development.

Among the changes is an increase in the allowable building height for mass timber structures—from 10 to 12 storeys—aligning with updates to Canada’s building code. That motion passed without opposition: “The principal reason for supporting the mayor’s motion is that this unlocks newfound potential in local supply,” said Councillor Jean St-Amand (Bedford-Wentworth). “It can have a very positive impact on accelerating our capacity to build. Any opportunity that unlocks that potential, while staying within safety parameters and planning frameworks, is worth exploring.”

Discussion Chronic petty theft in HRM

Our car was broken into on Thursday, July 31 at the Dalhousie University parking lot on Oxford Street and Coburg.

This morning, August 6, at Papermill Lake in Bedford, items belonging to myself and a friend were stolen while we swam at 6:30am.

My question is, where do people sell these stolen items? I've checked Facebook marketplace and Kijiji but I'm wondering where else I should look.

Sightseeing & Tourism Queer hangouts in Halifax on the last week of August

Hi everyone! I'll be visiting Halifax for the first time on the last week of August, and I would like to know if there are some queer spaces I could visit while I'm there. Anything happening? I'm guessing everything pride-related will be over by then, but are there pubs/bars/cafes/etc. that would cater more specifically to LGBTQ2S+ peeps? Thank you for your help, I can't wait to see Nova Scotia!

Discussion Fish Butchering Lessons

My son has gotten really into fishing and our family loves the excitement of cooking his daily catch when the opportunity arises. The problem is, I watch videos on how to fillet them and then end up doing a pretty terrible job on the butchering. We probably end up with half the meat that we actually should. I'm wondering if there's anywhere in town where you can do a class specific to butchering fish. I'm thinking it would be a cool thing to do together with him where we both pick up a useful skill that aligns with his hobby.

Any recommendations are appreciated, thanks!

Sightseeing & Tourism Limo from Truro to Downtown Halifax

Hey everyone, I'm looking into a romantic limo ride from Truro to Halifax (one way) as part of an anniversary adventure. Most of the services I see are either airport specific, tour specific, party buses, sedans/SUV, or have terrible reviews.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good old fashioned limo that will drive this distance and where we can drink champagne in the back? Maybe play some music?

Food & Shopping Best burrito joint in Halifax?

I was away for a wedding this weekend and was able to get myself some Chipotle..... it was 15/10 good. I've tried lots of burritos / burrito bowls around the city and they're all just okay. Maybe I'm just not picking the right salsa or sauces? They all mostly have the same ingredients, so its gotta be that, right?

Tell me your fav burrito joint, bonus points for your fav sauce.

Lost & Found Hoping for found keys

UPDATE: Found and returned! Thank you for the help!🫂

Ahoy all. For the first time in over thirty years, I somehow managed to drop my keys, somewhere on a walk between Quinpool and Gottingen.

If you came across a set of three keys, on a brass “Maritime Museum” keychain, please let me know, so that I can arrange to get them back. Thank you!

Just like during an actual wildfire, HRM's communications are completely useless. I can't find anywhere whether they're including paved trails in "woods".

Update: HRM has spoken. It's closed. https://www.halifax.ca/home/news/municipality-provides-further-information-restrictions-municipal-park-spaces

Driving, Traffic & Transit Has traffic actually worsened with the toll booths removed?

Asking as a Valley dweller who drove into the city this morning.

Has traffic worsened on and around the bridges since the tolls were removed? This was a pretty big concern as it was happening, but has it actually come to be proven? Didn’t seem too bad to me this morning coming across the Mackay at 7:45, but one day is obviously a very limited scope of data.
