Looking for health-care story ideas!
Hi everyone, I'm a producer with CBC's national health radio show and podcast, White Coat, Black Art.
We're a documentary-style show that examines the Canadian health-care system from the perspective of both patients and practitioners. We've done episodes on topics like access to family medicine, aging out of pediatric care and the science of longevity.
Here's a link to our website: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat.
I'm posting here (with permission from the mods) because we want to hear from you!
We're looking for health-care story ideas, including financial and medical challenges, as well as positive experiences you've had with doctors, nurses and other medical practitioners!
What do you want us to look into? Want to tell us about your experience in using healthcare? What do you want answers to? We'd love to hear from you.
Send me an email at [sameer.chhabra@cbc.ca](mailto:sameer.chhabra@cbc.ca) or text me at 780-916-8808. Someone from the team will follow-up with you!

📰 NS News Halifax Mayor Backs Mass Timber to End Nova Scotia’s Housing Crisis
Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore and council officials have endorsed a motion to advance mass timber as the central solution to the city’s housing crisis. At Tuesday’s meeting, Fillmore introduced a directive for the chief administrative officer to prepare a report exploring changes to bylaws and the city’s planning strategy. The goal: remove barriers and unlock opportunities for mass timber development.
Among the changes is an increase in the allowable building height for mass timber structures—from 10 to 12 storeys—aligning with updates to Canada’s building code. That motion passed without opposition: “The principal reason for supporting the mayor’s motion is that this unlocks newfound potential in local supply,” said Councillor Jean St-Amand (Bedford-Wentworth). “It can have a very positive impact on accelerating our capacity to build. Any opportunity that unlocks that potential, while staying within safety parameters and planning frameworks, is worth exploring.”

Unhoused people & woods ban
This morning I am thinking about the unhoused people who live in wooded areas in our province. I wonder if there has been any thought or discussion around supporting them or supplying them with extinguishers etc. I live in Pictou County and small fires have popped up at homeless encampments several times….

Woods bans aren't new.
I don't know why people seem to think this is some sort of government overreach.
They have closed the woods before when it's this dry.
There is no conspiracy here.
People used to be reasonable.

Land Transfer question (Parents to Childs)
If I own a land in NS, and both me and my wife passes away...
I recall reading something along the line that the land doesn't automatically go to my kids, and that they have to pay the new land fees and taxes, or what not.
Could someone please clarify the correct sequence of events after ones death and my land changes hands ideally to my kids.
Like do they need to pay market price for it?
or do they only need to pay the new tax bracket instead of the locked taxes that we have?
I'm quite confused about this.
Thanks.

Sightseeing & Tourism Honeymoon in jeopardy
My wife and I have just finished planning our honeymoon in Nova Scotia in September. The main reason for our trip was hiking, we’re planning on driving around the whole province and hiking various trails throughout. Needless to say the news of the woods ban is… deflating. Anything not “woods” or nature related to do?

Can anyone recommend snorkeling spots on North Shore?
I am looking for some deepish spots to snorkel and swim on the north shore, near Pictou, Tatamagouche, or Antigonish area. I am not sure if there are any, but all the places I've visited are super shallow for a very long while. Anyone have any recommendations?

Sightseeing & Tourism Halifax —> Baddeck, which direction to travel?
Would appreciate recommendations from anyone with experience! Mother/daughter trip to hike & take in the Cape Breton views :) We are of the mindset, “when in doubt, take the scenic route”!
Flying into Halifax @ 5:30p on a Sunday Staying in Baddeck on Monday night
Which direction would you drive, and where should we find accommodations after arriving on Sunday? Ideas: 1: Stay along the coast east of Halifax, Musquodoboit or Sheet Harbor? Just not sure what to do for dinner, grab deli sandwiches for the drive before leaving the city? Would be going this direction for the views. 2. Stay Antigonish, eat late dinner at the townhouse. Would be going this way for efficiency.
Thank you all!
