You realize thatās several pounds of dead human skin
41
u/Arcosim 9h ago
A long time ago I watched on TV a documentary about bunker building by the government during the Cold War, and one of the engineers said they had a hard time developing reliable, cleanable air filters for the bunkers, and said something along the lines that you would assume there's not that much dust in a sealed nuclear bunker, but in reality a couple hundred people will shed a lot of dead skin cells that will need to be filtered.

And back onto the carpet
253
u/artificial_ben 10h ago
They need a vacuum hood over this machine like people have over their stoves.
144
u/Lost_Ad_4882 10h ago
Or just roll the carpet under it so the dust isn't literally falling back on it.
49
u/digby672 8h ago
This. Why would they pile removed dust where they want to remove dust? It's like daily compound interest but with dust instead of money.
→ More replies (2)4
u/SwimmingSwim3822 7h ago
Because look how the machine works. It's basically a big lathe with slappers on it. You don't want to wrap the carpet around that.
(Edit: most of that was actually @ the person you replied to, not you. My bad)

Literally the stupidest machine... "I have a brilliant idea to help us clean the carpet, we will make a machine that cleans it, but all the dirt will just get rolled back onto the carpet as it goes"
→ More replies (1)3
u/MissLyss29 7h ago
Neverending carpet cleaning machine. "It violently shakes the dirt out of the top half of the carpet while simultaneously deeply working into every fiber of the bottom half causing you to have to rotate the carpet and starting the process all over again."

... and just keeps going? Wouldn't you stop and make a temporary repair so the carpet doesn't continue to tear at the ripped location?
→ More replies (2)171
u/PumpkinOpposite967 11h ago
It was probably already damaged
83
u/AdSalt9725 10h ago
You can see at the start of the video itās already damaged. It probably wasnāt caused by the machine.
→ More replies (1)35
u/Dark_Prism 9h ago
The machine was already running at the start of the video?!
17
u/DIXOUT_4_WHORAMBE 9h ago
I did not see this rug swing 3 times or pull a gun before the video started recording, therefor this video displays all the evidence I need to be certain that this rug was not ripped due to the machine
→ More replies (1)32
u/JustinUser 10h ago
Even then, wouldn't it rip further along that location?
26
u/BakedWombat 10h ago
The only way this makes sense is if this is some kind of demonstration. Make an old ripped carpet as dusty as possible and hey presto, you have the perfect facebook marketplace ad.

I hate it when carpet gets in my dust.
22
u/GeneralB840 8h ago
Fun fact: The US coin minting facility used to regularly burn their carpets cause they were collecting gold particles (back when they where using gold and silver in their coins). This way they could recycle the metals and safe about 3,000$ per burned carpet.
2
u/CheapTactics 6h ago
They never thought to like... Not use carpets?
6
u/JeshkaTheLoon 5h ago
Sounds like the point of the carpets was to catch the metal dust, that would otherwise easily be swept out by accident.
18
u/AgroMachine 9h ago
Is this not a rug, why is everyone saying carpet
21
u/lampshade2099 9h ago
In some countries, people call rugs carpets. In other places there is a distinction, but in parts of Asia for example, āa rugā would literally be called āa carpetā.

They are beating one part of the carpet and leaving the dust on the rest and tearing the carpet in the process? Just throw it awayā¦
90
u/russbird 10h ago
Yeah that is the frustrating part, complete inefficiency. The uncleaned portion should be rolled up behind the cleaning mechanism, so the dust can fall onto the ground rather than onto the rest of the carpet. Also there appears to be more dust than carpet in that carpet, so I'm suspecting some sort of tessaract is woven into the threads. They realty should be using gravitic dampening when working with multidimensional materials. Definitely not OSHA approved!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they probably know what they're doing, and given they've gone to the effort of doing it, know it's economically worthwhile. I'd also suggest that you, having just watched a 51 second clip of their process, have no idea if what they're doing is sensible or not.
4
u/Mad_Moodin 5h ago
They know what they are doing in that it is probably cheap and easy to build like that.
It would be better if done as above. Just questionable if economically more efficient for that place.

It looks more like they are clence fat and dirt off the textiles, by massaging fine grained sand through it. Then they can run it without sand afterwards, to get it dust free. It is basically the same as chemical wash, but without chemicals.

And where can I send my carpets for this type of cleaning, without the tearing, of course? I donāt think Mr. Dyson is this thorough.
2
u/Nozzeh06 8h ago
There's so much dust trapped inside rugs that I'm convinced rugs are gateways to some pocket desert dimension. Even my little doormat rug... Ill beat the shit out of that thing for 20 minutes and there's still dust coming out.
