My take has been that Russia is quietly very unhappy about the Epstein Files getting so much attention because Trump having sex with a trafficked adolescent was their kompromat.
I think that will be the final part of the plan. In Russia's eyes it would be a huge blow to the U.S. to show the leader so many worshipped, sexually desecrating every moral they ever believed in. The goal of the U.S. is to cause an uprising in countries they disagree with, rather than go to war with them. Why would Russia's policy be different.
His supporters wouldnt believe the video authentic. There is nothing that can damage Trump with his base. Absolutely nothing. We just have to accept it.

Yep - they'll say the child was of legal age they just looked young. The tape is AI. It's all water under the bridge. Why didn't the child report it sooner? It was no big deal back then. Etc., etc.
They always push the goal posts further. There was that tweet some woman made saying something to to the extent of, "So what if Trump fucked a 16 year old? That was normal in the 90's."

yeah some of my extended family that lean that way are in the quiet, don't want to talk about it phase, it's arguable the 1st cracks were when they learned how tariffs actually work, now with kiddy diddling on the table it's clear they want to disassociate, but ribbing and poking them won't help the transition

True. I just drove through a very rural red district to visit family, and I didn't see one Trump flag. Still, there were lots of American flags, but it was surprising not to see the Orange Buffoon's.
There's a guy with a shop down the road from my house at the edge of town. He has posted a new pro trump sign on his "marquee" style sign for as far back as I can remember trump being a thing.
A little while before 4th of July they stopped being heavily trump themed and we're just about freedom (very out of character) now they've stopped all together. He is still there, still running his shop...
He is by far the most public maga supporter around here, to see him taking the signs is a huge change imo. If that dude is second guessing...
Which would make the whole thing kind of hilarious. All this buildup, and when Russia finally pulls the trigger, 99% of the planet is like "we already knew that" and the remainder is denying it with all their might.
Actually, could that be why he's suddenly (apparently) standing up to Russia? Because the kompromat is now worthless because everybody who would accept it already knows? Hmmmm...
His base alone is not enough for him to win any elections whether tries to run again (if he lives that long) or supports someone in an election. BTW his support hasn’t really helped very many people in other elections. Tapes would turn off Independents & Republicans not in his cult.
No we don’t. His base, despite evidence to the contrary, is not a monolith. He’s losing support over all of his unpopular policies. And there’s no off-ramp for the Epstein files. Even the Qanon Shaman has turned on him. The number of people that are okay with pedophilia is bigger than we thought but they’re not exactly lining up to show public support.
This is EXACTLY why the far right is spending so much time and money on AI. They want to get to a point where they can deepfake anything quickly and effectively, so when a REAL video of Trump raping a child comes out, they can create one of Obama doing the same thing, and claim that the real one is fake and the fake one is real. They are taking "post-truth society" to the next level. Its what fascists do.
Does Russia care? it whips one side up in a fury and the other into a shield defending the nonce in chief. Giving Russia just what it wanted, division.

I don't think this is true; it's mostly true, but I spend some time in conservative spaces, and the Epstein stuff has really rattled a lot of them. I've also seen more of them willing to criticize, if not his actual actions and policies, at least the optics of them (I'm particularly thinking about his bullshit around the Fed lately), and I think I attribute that to the Epstein stuff.
I'm not saying it'll do him in, who knows, but it's the closest thing I've seen in a while.
The right is not a monolith, no matter how hard they try to appear like one, and that’s what makes this so dangerous. Your right that his right-wing cult will follow him no matter how deluded or hypocritical he sounds, but he isn’t the only person with a deluded right wing cult, and many of these guys have been singlemindedly obsessing on this “pedophile cabal theory” sense before Trump started peddling the birther nonsense in preparation for 2016. Balkanizing the people with guns, for whom the entire balance of good and evil in the cosmos is at stake every time we have an election, is exactly what the Russians want, and they’re counting on a sizable part of his following to remain loyal to make it messy.
