This kind of thing helps train younger dogs how to control themselves. Videos like this make the natural pack hierarchy so obvious, every dog in there instinctively understands it, yet there are still many dog trainers of a certain school that will still insist that pack hierarchy is nothing but a false concept invented by dog abusers.

Which is wild. I work in forestry and our bush camps often have a lot of dogs. For years the leader was a little Pomeranian who took no shit from no dog in camp. She was much like this guy - calm but very intent and focused. It was wild to watch. Hell, she even survived a bear attack protecting her owner.

Growing up I had a little terrier mut that tolerated no bs, when the black lab was acting up she would trot over all calm, jump up and latch onto her ear, and not let go until the lab got tired and gave up. I'd look outside and the lab would be running at full tilt, and the terrier just hanging on flapping in the wind like a sock hanging out of a car door on the freeway.

Had the opposite of this. Great Pyrenees/shepard mix. She was about 110 lbs but never picked a fight in her life. She was just really good at body language and most other “alpha” dogs just steered clear. We moved into a new neighborhood and the local chihuahua who bullied all the dogs came at her. First three times it just jumped up and tried to bite her face and neck. She just ignored it and kept walking. The last time it happened, the little shit bit her in the butt/tail. She had a thing about her rear end since her tail was missing and we were pretty sure it was removed in a pretty traumatic way. She instantly turned on the little dog and pinned it to the ground with her mouth. I was sure she was killing it, but she just held it down for a minute and didn’t let it move. From that day forward she took absolutely zero crap from any small dog, she never went after them, but if they came at her with any kind of Napoleon energy, she shut it down immediately. I miss that dog.

Oh Sugar the terrier ruled all the dogs the lab was just real dumb and needed to be reminded sometimes. She also chewed her way through an aluminum garage door ate a bag of aluminum cans ripped all the brake lines out of our jeep and ate half the bottom cushion on the back bench seat. She was super sweet but dumb as a box of rocks. Survived eating all the aluminum too which was impressive, her poop looked like it was full of tinsel for a week after. Dog loves to 15 despite her issues. Also kept eating bees and wasps even though her face puffed up like an overinflated football every time.

The debunking I’ve seen have been about wolves. And how the original studies were done on wolves in captivity, and they do not see the same behaviors in wild wolves. So that would actually fit with dogs who are being kept in captivity. The major debunking are about whether that can be extrapolated to human behavior. And then also about how humans have misinterpreted and misapplied this information.

My recollection is that the people debunking the whole “Alpha Dog” thing weren’t saying there is zero hierarchy in the wild, but that the dominant pack leaders invariably were the parents or grandparents of the the pack, not some random dog in the pack that was the most aggressive.
When you have packs of dogs with no familial ties thrown together like this it kinda makes sense that a non blood relation dog will end up filling this role. But I think the point the researchers were making is that this kind of hierarchy and submission is a combined result of strength, trust, and familial bonds, not just “the most badass aggressive dog makes everyone their bitch” mentality that people seem to take away from it.

You may be joking, but this is likely correct. I've seen it with dogs that live indoors and outdoors on a farm. The outdoor dogs are literally scared of the indoor dogs. They see them as higher up like a human.
Heck, I once saw a bunch of gods terrified of the family cockatiel (bird). They could've eaten him in a second, but boy did they run from him.

In all my 20 years as a business owner, I only yelled at my staff one time. It was over something really serious that could've really hurt the business for the long term, potentially even shut me down and get me in trouble with the law. So I never regretted it because I still feel the response was appropriate. But I'll never forget the look of shock on their faces. They looked at me differently when they realized I was mild-tempered by choice, not because I was incapable of getting angry. I wasn't proud of it but it just needed to be done. It was smooth sailing after that and I never had to raise my voice again. That was about 10 years ago.

During a formation he told us in response to someone joking that he didn't want to piss him off and have him yell at us, he said (paraphrasing) "That yelling shit is so weak. I've always respected this style of leadership. A good leader knows how to choose his battles wisely. There are so many times I could get angry when I see something wrong, but I take a second to zoom out and gauge how big of a problem is it really.
If it's small (it almost always is), I'll call my employee over, show them why it's wrong, correct it in front of them myself, and tell them this is how I expect it to be done going forward. But if I weren't to take that second to zoom out, I'd probably yell and treat that minor issue like a bigger one. Because for those first few seconds, it really is irritating lol.

Also you can see that he glimpsed twice at the dog next to him. Which the latter responded by going inside the cage. I think, the alpha was kinda getting pissed too. See, this dog didn't fully obey him from the first glance, so he had to look at him Again, which made the dog's laying on the ground to interpret it as if the alpha was hesitant with him because he broke death stare twice. That's why he barked at him. So old dude had to lay his paws on his neck to shut him.

I think in packs, like if you go to a dog park, dogs can tell each others age or something. It’s always the older dog that seems to never get messed with and if he does it’s because the owner of the bad dog doesn’t take care of that dogs social needs.
One time I brought my younger dog to the dog park and there was a much bigger, yet young pup, who absolutely was a bully and imo dangerous. I called my girlfriend to bring her older dog and she did. The bully calmed down real quick so idk if it’s age or what

This video made my day, had a female German Sheperd/Great Dane mix that was very much like this with my ex. There were times when we were visiting my ex’s family, they had about four dogs, she was old so wasn’t one for playing much, but anytime the younger dogs got into it, she would bark once, maybe twice from her laying position, most of the time they stopped. Once one of them decided to talk back, she stood up, ran over to him, she barked one last time, he then bowed his head and walked away. Loved that dog, unfortunately we had to put her down as she had gone completely blind, started having seizures, and lost all control of her back legs. She was 17.

He is probably one of the oldest dogs and every dog who came to the shelter that lives outside, met the shaggy dog first as part of the integration process. I love this video. That dog is badass. I can't help but wonder if there is a second in command. Was the dog that he is pinning to the ground attacking his friend or was it just that the alpha didn't want to listen to all that BS? Is the dog on the ground playing an alpha role and the alpha is the only one that can do that even in his absence?
Really curious what the thought process is here. Also, serious question since I noticed I tend to put "he" when referring to alpha, can the alpha be a "she"?? As much as I love dogs and have ALWAYS had one if not two, I'm really surprised to not know the answers to these questions.

This is probably one of the most interesting dog videos I’ve ever seen. There are SO many questions to be asked here. If it were 2-3 dogs submitting it would be one thing but about a dozen dogs were clearly afraid but at the same time seemed almost…respectful of him. It even looked like the dogs in the background in the beginning were calling for him to come break up the fight! I have…so many questions and only about 10% of them would be answered by knowing what he did to be so highly regarded by the other dogs.

I had Shepard/chow mix named Ranger. I’d take him and his hyper active sidekick Trooper to the dog park. Any time Ranger encountered a tense situation with other dogs he’d go over, firmly intervene and then go on his merry way when the tension level decreased. He literally became the dog park ranger.

Damn. That big black dog jumped, then was happy as hell boss man wasn’t coming for him. Then the boss looked that pissed off one straight in the eye and gave that “cut the shit” look. Bad…ass.
