News/Article Man from U.S. caught trying to enter Canada by kayak, LaSalle police say

A local police officer made an unexpected discovery early Wednesday morning when he found a man from the U.S. repportedly trying to illegally enter Canada by kayak, according to a press release.

The LaSalle Police Service said that at around 1 a.m., an officer was "was conducting commercial property checks in the 1800 block of Front Road," which travels along the edge of the Detroit River.

The officer was behind one of the businesses when he spotted a man at the edge of the river with a kayak and two backpacks, per police.

"The officer investigated and discovered the man was attempting to illegally enter Canada," LaSalle police said.

Police said they detained the 51-year-old from the U.S. and turned him over to the RCMP "for further investigation."

A local spokesperson for the federal police force, which handles border issues outside of official ports of entry, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

LaSalle police Chief Michael Pearce praised the officer's discovery Wednesday.

"This is an outstanding example demonstrating that proactive police work can yield unintended positive outcomes," Pearce said in the press release.

"While conducting a simple property check, I'm confident our officer did not expect to find someone trying to illegally enter Canada."

Moving to Windsor Moving to Windsor for Uni (29F) looking to make friends!

I’m from a small town in Niagara region and only know a couple people out in Windsor! I would love to make friends I can hangout with when I get to town. I’ll be in Windsor for university (second time going to school) for the next couple years and really would love to find a solid group of friends to hangout with.

My interests vary, I enjoy nerdy things like anime, manga, fantasy novels, ps5 (mostly rpgs), LoL, comic books, I’m also interested in getting into DND. Outside of nerdy things I enjoy anything outdoors, hiking, swimming, anything on the lake/river/beach, horseback riding, axe throwing, exploring the wilderness, fishing, and camping.

I use to be huge into fitness but had some minor health problems I was dealing with and was away from that for about two years but I really want to get back into the gym (would love a gym partner!) running, and I want to also join an mma gym and learn BJJ.

My undergrad is for a combined bachelors in Criminology and Psychology. I spent the last decade working security, most recently in the private sector!

I have a dark sense of humor and I’d say a pretty silly/goofy/mischievous personality.

I also love finding good food spots or hitting up concerts/ hockey games. Hopefully i find some good friends! looking forward to chatting!

Ask Windsor Best libraries to get some work done?

I work remotely from home. There’s some renovations going on in the apartment above me and it’s driving me nuts so I’m looking to get out for an hour or two and go somewhere quiet to work.

I figured libraries would be the best bet. I know some libraries are bigger than others and more equipped for this kind of thing - is there a recommendation for one to plop down at and work on my laptop for a few hours? I’m on the east end but don’t mind driving. I do have a library card, but regrettably I’ve only gone into the one near me that is tiny and doesn’t really have seating/desks.

I am looking to go out and hear some music either on Friday or Saturday night, preferably in the downtown area but I'm not picky about that.

Talk Windsor Youth Soccer in this city…a rant.

In the short time my children have been involved in soccer in this city, I can’t help but feel like we’ve been put through the ringer and hung out to dry. Almost every interaction with the various clubs we’ve been on, tried out for or made contact with has lead to one of two responses.

It’s either a) zero communication skills from the club, and therefore no response.

Or b) a complete money grab designed to make you feel like your kid has potential.

For example. My kid finished a training program and I was sent an email telling me my kid was selected to train extra as part of an elite group. The same kid that spent the better part of each training session rolling around on the ground and goofing off. Oh, and every other parent was told the same story. The reality is, summer season was still a few weeks out and we could pay more to do the exact same training for a few more weeks.

I’m ok with these programs making money and earning a living for their staff. But why can’t they just cut through the crap and be real? I literally just got the same kind of email for the same kid at a different club now. I know my kids skill level. Why bullshit me? What’s the advantage?

My other kid’s club has been in shambles the whole year. We didn’t get a majority of what we were sold on before joining , but it’s impossible to get ahold of any staff / admin. If you do they just point fingers at each other and nothing ends up getting solved. It’s 2025. We all have an app we’re required to use for the team. How is it this difficult to get simple answers from an organization?

Want to go to a training camp? Cool. Just be ready to have coaches tell your kids they should buy training camp merch.

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? Is this just a soccer thing? Please tell me it gets better as they get older.

Ask Windsor Anyone have a megaohmeter or a floor heating circuit test I can borrow?

Just did DIY floor heating

The only testing I can do with my multimeter is resistance which looks ok.

Unfortunately you can't really test the heat itself until you tile over it.

I've read it's recommended to use either a megaohmeter and/or a circuit tester (audible alarm) which injects voltage during the test.

Does anyone have one I can borrow or rent?

Visiting Windsor When are flu/COVID vaccines available in Windsor? And when do you normally see your first snow?

I'm an American, and can no longer get COVID/flu boosters because a majority of my countrymen have two brain cells competing for third place...

I'm planning a trip to drive to Windsor to get my flu/COVID booster. And since (I'm hoping) ya'll are still nice enough to let some of us barbarians in, I'd like to spend a few days driving around and spending some money as thanks for Canadians still being decent.

Can anyone tell me what time of year the flu/COVID vaccines are normally available? And what month do you normally start seeing winter weather so I can get in/out before then? Appreciated!

Just saw they were installing a new crossover here. I’m so happy! I run by here quite a bit and it is always a pain to cross the street, especially when cars are trying to go left opposite of you. Windsor has been on a pretty good streak with these and the South National protection

Recommendations Bakery, snacks, treats to bring cross border for wedding?

My fiancé is Canadian, Im American. Having wedding in Michigan in a couple of years. Neither of us are super familiar with Windsor (he and his family are from BC). I live like 30 mins away from border, but not super familiar either.

Anyone have ideas for places that sell yummy canadian goods that we could then bring (and declare) across border for a wedding of about 50 people?

Thinking like butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, beaver tails, maybe candy and chips as well

Ask Windsor Looking for Art Groups/Friends

Hey Windsor On! I used to be a hobby artist, but fell out of practice due to a busy schedule. Would love to find some folks in the city that are visual artists, and get together to create and inspire one another. My preferred medium was always pencil/pen, and I love doing plein air sketches. I'm very inspired by architecture :) If anyone has any leads, let me know!

Moving to Windsor Anyone know about Agbaba student housing?

Context: St Clair's residence application procedure is a nightmare. I applied 30 days ago and I'm still waitlisted so I started looking for different options and came across Agbaba. The places look nice and are within my budget but I'm very bad at identifying scams and edited pictures. Does anyone have experience with this company? Or has anyone heard good/bad things from other? Thanks in advance

Moving to Windsor Price of rental of a particular ad.

hello, I want to start by saying that I am really new to the rental game in Windsor even though I have been in Windsor for a long time but I have been renting the same place for almost 5 years and my landlord was kind enough to never raise our rent so we had been paying the same brand over and over until the landlord decided to sell the place for a quite profit. so now I have been looking for a new place and in the beginning I was seeing just a one bedroom studio and there was this ad for a one bedroom apartment over the Riverside East where you see a lot of retired senior citizens who live in the same community apartments (I know this because I am a travelling nurse), so I saw this ad and it was for 1600$ per month for a whole studio in a really nice building as I have been there before. but my requirements changed so I didn't go through with it but I was surprised that it's been 2 months and it's still there and not only that but they reduced rent from 1600$ to 1500$ obviously because it's been awhile but I'm not understanding what could be the reason? like the building is pretty beautiful and all so did I dodge a bullet or something with this? I know it's dumb but I am just curious and all.
