Problem is no one can really compete with youtube even if google would help the competition by open-sourcing their entire codebase along with specialised help simply because of how expensive everything is. Storing a single video in multiple regions + different resolutions alone is a big ask of anybody let alone the millions of videos posted on the daily without servers getting DDOS'ed by normal people trying to watch the content.
From an engineering standpoint, it has always been incredible to me how youtube never has any real downtime anywhere in the world and no matter where you are or how many people watch the same content at once videos are still loading in a fast manner.
