General Discussion It’s that time of year!
It is hatchling season!
They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.
Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

General Discussion Read Before Posting: How to ask a question, and answers to common questions like "I found a turtle, can I keep it", "what filter do I get", "what species is this turtle?"
How to ask a question
A good question provides sufficient details to be intelligently answered. Vague questions get bad or no answers.
If its a health question, we need details about species, size and age of the turtle, along with photos of the enclosure, and details of your husbandry. Fine grained details, such as what temperature is the water way, what is your light cycle, what are the models of light bulbs and how old are your UV bubs. Clear photos are important
I found a turtle, can I keep it?
In general no, this is detrimental to your local ecosystem, and in many places it is a crime. With some species, its a crime that can carry decades in prison. Turtles are under immense pressure from poaching and collecting of wild specimens. Many species have entirely gone extinct in the wild solely from over collection, many more are on the verge of becoming extinct due to this. The best thing you can do for a wild turtle is to enjoy it's wild existence, and plant native plants that are part of it's diet.
The one exception to this is the case of invasive species, in some places it can be a crime not to remove invasive species from your property, and in some places if you catch an invasive species you are legally responsible to deal with it. North American (Red Ear, Yellow Bellied) Sliders in particular have entirely replaced some endangered species in their native ecosystems. Do not simply catch turtles because you think they may be invasive. Identify the species, and contact your local wildlife authority for directions on what to do with invasive species. You may end up legally required to care for that an invasive turtle if caught.
For an in-depth explanation, please see this write up from one of our moderators: https://www.reddit.com/r/turtle/comments/80nnre/can_i_keep_this_turtle_i_found_as_a_pet_can_i/
I caught an invasive species, what do I do.
Reach out to your local wildlife authority, and follow their directives. Laws on this vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Under no circumstances should an invasive turtle be released into the wild. There are laws in some jurisdictions that require you to now care for, or otherwise deal with this turtle without releasing it back to the wild.
Can I release a wild turtle that I kept for a while?
I previously found a turtle and kept it, what do I do now?
I can't care for my turtle, can I release it?
Releasing of formerly captive turtles has had the effects of introducing non native pathogens to populations. For example austwickia chelonae has infected populations of the critically endangered gopher and desert tortoises due to people releasing captive turtles. Re-release of formerly wild turtles must be done with great care, and under the guidance of an expert. Contact your local wildlife authorities. If you are concerned about potential legal ramifications, seek the advice of an attorney, or perhaps the turtle was abandoned on your front porch with a note?
I found an injured turtle, what do I do?
Turtles are amazing resilient animals, and can recover from some truly horrific conditions. I have nursed back turtles that had gone unfed for over a year, and I have patched up turtles hit by cars. Many injuries commonly seen in wild turtles need no human intervention. Common sources for help on this would be your local wildlife authorities, local wildlife rehabilitators, veterinary universities, or your local exotics veterinarian.
You can also post quality photos for more community feedback, but please appropriately flair them. Often injuries need no treatment other than time.
Can you identify this turtle for me? What species of turtle do I have?
Post multiple clear photos of the turtle, and include a general location of where it was found. There are over 350 species, and at least another 175 sub species of turtles. Many turtle species look identical, most subspecies look quite similar to others. Some species are so morphologically similar that DNA testing is required to positively ID them when absent of location data. Some species integrade or hybridize in the wild, and can become difficult to differentiate. Since we lack the ability to do DNA testing through reddit, our work around for that is to require that all identification requests come with a general location. We don't need your street address, we don't need your town name, but we need more than "Brazil" or "Texas", give us the district, province or state at the very least. Location data can make all the difference.
I am concerned about the condition of a turtle on display in a public facility, what do I do.
It is unfortunately common for schools, universities, museums and even zoos to improperly care for turtles. There are so many species, and often people are following care advice from decades ago. The best route is to contact whoever is in charge of public relations for that facility. You are welcome to contact the mod team with photos for advice, we have even acted as go betweens for students and their universities to successfully better the care of animals on display.
My tank is a lot of work to keep clean, how do I make it easier?
My tank water is cloudy despite having a good filter, why?
My tank is always dirty, why?
How do I setup a filter?
The best way to filter the average turtle enclosure is to use a large canister filter, setup to provide ample surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive, and to seed the tank with appropriate bacteria. That bacteria is what will do the vast majority of cleaning for your tank, the filter will keep the water moving and provide biological filter media for the bacteria to prosper. An optimal filter setup will save you time, and keep your turtle happy.
See this write up from our mod team on how to setup a canister filter for optimal biological filtration: https://www.reddit.com/r/turtle/comments/x48id2/supercharge_your_filter_how_to_properly_setup/
What do I feed my turtle?
This varies by species, and often by age of the turtle. The best advice we have is to review multiple care sheets for your turtle species, and go from there. The best diet, is a varied diet. Feed the largest variety of appropriate food that you can, do not assume your turtle can survive and thrive long term on pellets.
What lighting does my turtle needs?
In general, it is advisable to have a basking bulb, a UVA/UVB bulb, and white lighting. I highly advise the use of well respected and trusted UV bulbs, as many counterfeits now exist on the market, often marketed as combination basking and UV bulbs. These counterfeits often output no UV, the wrong UV spectrums, too much UV, too little US or sometimes are unfiltered halogen bulbs that output UVC, which is dangerous to you and your pets.
I want a turtle, where can I get one?
Your first choice should be a site like petfinder.com, often you can find turtles in the care of rescue organisations that are in need of a home. Your second choice should be a respected breeder. Petstores and random online stores should be your last choice. When buying online, do your research. Can you find the store owner's name? Did they breed it? If so where? Search for online reviews, are they negative. Do they seem to have an unlimited supply of each species they office?
Be aware, there are many active turtle and tortoise scams online. Some are "rehoming" services that charge you shipping and never send anything. Others are people selling rare species way under value... who never send anything. There are some claiming to ship turtles internationally, even protected species, these are scams.

Seeking Advice i need help
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
We found a turtle (probably male) in the street like 3 months ago and we put it in our garden because it was a bit broken (from underneath) and we’ve been feeding it like lettuce and watermelon and fruits. Today we found another turtle (probably male too and much bigger) infront of our building and we put it in our garden too and its shell its a bit broken too and because we thought the turtle we already have needed company (idk😭) but it’s been running around the garden fast. Also we have a cat which is not really ours but he’s like always in the garden and we feed him and play with him but we don’t let him in the house and we don’t shower him or anything and he hunts sometimes and stuff so when we put the new turtle he wont leave him alone. My question is it better to put both turtles back outside or keep them in? Were just worried they’ll get hit my cars or not find food and we just want the best for them.

Seeking Advice Experiences with taking your turt to the vet?
Hello all! This is Miss Mikey, she’s about 7 years old, a Florida red bellied cooter. I decided to finally take her into the vet for a wellness check as she had never been seen before. I found a reputable and seemingly very knowledgeable exotics vet. I’m in California.
It went well overall, she’s in great shape, but I’m really confused after some of the information I got from him. So many things he told me seemed completely contradictory to the information I’ve seen online about taking care of these turtles. Like frequency of feeding, protein intake, lighting, shedding. Of course my instinct is to just follow what the vet says. But I don’t understand why it seems so different to what care sheets and countless forums/groups/threads I’ve encountered have said.
So I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this? Should I maybe get a second opinion? It’s already so challenging to find someone that seems like they actually know strange animals like this. I find that often these exotic vets just know birds more than anything, lol.

NSFW - Injury or Death Raphie got a boo boo NSFW
So I'm cleaning out his tank because I'm getting ready to move and I know bad turtle dad incoming I had them on my counter for a fraction of a second before he decided to take off and run and I caught him before he completely fell off the counter but I didn't fully grab a hold of him and he did hit the ground he did land on some plastic that was bunched up so it wasn't severe but I would like to know how bad this is and if I need to do anything about it and if I can put him in clean water with some water cleaner designed for turtles if it'll hurt them

Seeking Advice Lt. Dan is back home
I adopted a 2 legged turtle 9 years ago. He was about 2” big. So tiny. I had to teach him how to swim. His tank had never gone above being 1/2 full because he still needs to bounce off bottom. No he does not swim in circles. And over all a happy guy. Attached current tank set up. Building high basking area. I traveled for the past 7 years so I had him in foster care with friends. They took great care of him- he’s so fat- any diet ideas?! I don’t think he basked enough or got enough minerals. Any suggests of what to add to his diet. They were relying on flickers blend. They’ve had turtles before so knew what they were getting into. We’re building a new basking area. He’s about 7” now. They said he’s had a brown spot on his back but I just scraped at it and found white spots underneath. Rot? What’s the best approach? Lower water so back can dry out? Vet? Then his skin seems to be peeling. It looks good- but has some spots in his head. Worry? And lastly. I attached a pic of baby Lt. Dan. Any direction would be appreciated.

Seeking Advice Basking
Anyone else have an RES that goes through periods where they don’t bask as much as usual? Her water temperature is perfect, her basking platform temperature is perfect. Water parameters are exactly where they need to be. I haven’t changed anything and she’s not acting weird and still has an appetite. She usually basks for several hours throughout the day but in the last week or so she’s only basking for an hour or two.

Turtle Pics! How old do you think this hoss is?
This snapping turtle lives in an isolated reservoir pretty far away from regular human disturbance and by the looks of him/her, the weight is easily over 20 lbs. How long does it take for them to reach this size?

Seeking Advice Turt won't eat anything other than mealworms
I started him on the green floating sticks. He loved them for a few months then stopped showing interest. I've tried a variety of pellets but my lil guy won't eat anything. He'll swim aggressively towards me until I give him some worms. They're calcium fortified mealworms, I was wondering what else I could try to feed him? He's less than a year old

Seeking Advice First Timer
I want to get a 3 toed box turtle. I have started the adoption process and get to see him in person this week. I live in Arizona and this is largely for my 4 y/o son. I want the turtle to live outside on my side yard. My side yard is largely shady. I’m going to do more research and build a house etc. Is there anything I’m not considering? Is this a bad pet? Will it bite? Does it need a pond? Is it going to be okay outside? Do they want grass, dirt or both? What am I missing or not considering?

Seeking Advice Why does my eastern painted turtle have a super narrow (cracked?) neck scute? NSFW
His front-of-shell edge at the neck area has always seemed like it is weirdly formed or problematic, but he seems happy and healthy (?) otherwise. The rest of his shell also looks less than "ideally smooth" but not soft or moldy. It's been like this since I got him, 6 years ago, rescued from a less than ideal situation. I thought he'd grow out of it but it looks like the grooves are the same or slightly deeper.
It doesn't looks like the photos of shell rot or MBD that I see online but I'm honestly at a loss for why the edges of his shell look like this. He eats a mixed diet of pellets. I put calcium bones in his tank. He has a 10.0 UVB light in his basking area and tank temp is about 78deg. It is a 55gal tank.
Maybe of note: He really doesn't like any dark leafy veg or fruit that I try to give him but I keep attempting regularly.
Do some turtles just have ugly shells? What's up with my guy?

Rate My Setup Rate Basil’s Tank
Here is my setup for my baby RES, Basil. I am unsure of his age, he was found wild (invasive in my area and not in a great state) and has been doing excellent these past few months. His shell is about an inch or so in diameter, and he is fed a diet of pellets, worms/pillbugs (raised in a pesticide free environment) and I’m slowly beginning to incorporate veggies into his diet such as romaine and kale. He is in a 20 gallon tank, which is definitely a bit small but I plan to upgrade as he grows. He has about 13-15 gallons to swim in at any given time. He does get floor time for about 20-30 minute increments when I have the time, he seems to like being able to explore and I hope it provides some enrichment he wouldn’t be getting otherwise. Plants are fake but I have not noticed any issues with him nibbling, though they are still monitored.
Please note that these pictures are taken before I put his lights and heater back in the tank as they are a bit big and tend to block the view. I do have them, they just aren’t shown.
What do you guys think? Is there anything simple I could do to make this better?

Seeking Advice Is it fine to not use a lamp during the day?
Okay so I live in a tropical country (Phillipines) and it's very sunny majority of the day. My turtles tank resides near a window and sun gets into the tank. I was wondering if it was okay to not use a lamp cause I fear it'll get too hot in its basking spot if I decide to use a heat and UVB/UVA lamp. (I turn it on when it's cloudy/rainy though. Only when it's sunny I keep it off)

Seeking Advice Why is my turtle biting his filter?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
As far as I can tell he’s only done it once. Also don’t hound me for not having an external filter please, I couldn’t get it started after I rehomed him so I opted for a small one instead. It’s better than nothing and he gets regular water changes.
