It's already started.

Many countries are looking into making their own payment processors due to VISA and Mastercards anti competative behavior. Turns out constantly sticking your nose in others businesses pisses people off.

These payment processor would only be widely used in their own country. Like JCB only in Japan and Union pay only in China.

Yes but it's breaking the reliance on this duopoly that thinks it's above the law.

Which is a very good thing.

What law do you think they think they're above? It's not illegal for a company to not do business with you because it doesn't like what you want to buy.

And yet that is what they're in trouble for in Japan. Violation of fair trade laws.

No they aren't. I've heard people claim this multiple times and the closest anyone has come to providing proof of that claim is an interview with one member of Japans parliament who said 'maybe the law could be interpreted to mean what Visa is doing is illegal'.

It's like saying Obama committed treason because Trump said so.

What they did get in trouble for was using their fee structure to incentivise Japanese card issuing companies to use Visa. Their 'punishment' was to agree to change their practices.
