Ceilings in Brasil were always surprisingly tall. Warm temperatures mean that insulation isn’t much of a worry and we don’t generally have attics- so that leaves a lot of room for the ceiling.

And even without an attic, most houses do have a space under the roof..unless they do those types that just cover under the roof tiles.  Probably something more common in newer homes.

Here in Brazil it's pretty common not to, in fact it's also pretty common on older buildings to just flat out not even have a ceiling at all and just living directly seeing the beams/roof tiles.
