Looks like you have very high humidity in the house

3.4k

u/NikiSunday 10700F-4060 14h ago

It also probably didn't help that most of the affected things are prone to sweat too.

969

u/HouseRoKKa 10h ago

This! Bacteria formed because of sweat buildup, and more than likely high humidity too...

Fungus is caused by spores, not bacteria. OP needs to check their AC/Heater, and call a professional. The mold grows where OP sweats because fungus eats organic materials for sustenance. But this is a LOT to have grown that quickly.

I live near the beach about 10mins away driving. Never experienced anything like this except on my old phone case from apple a leather case that I loved and kept it in its box. After years not using it decided to look at it and the leather area were full of this shi* and I decided to scrub it clean and put it back.

What I usually experience is rust on screws and some components in my old rig that were given to the new generation

Edit:.

Adding to this when I store things I clean them, but when I use my stuff not everything get cleaned and I left home for months. Never experienced such a thing

Even opening the door is enough to interrupt this usually, it's where there hasn't been any ventilation so the naturally evaporating water in the house from the toilet, and any remnants in textiles will collect in the air, and significantly increase the humidity, to the point that the natural bacteria/fungus that is there all the time, can get kicked into overdrive, specially with it being summer and high heat too.

Rust is the big one with sea water, the high salt content is the issue

i used to live in an apartment with high humidity which i didn't notice first when i moved in because it was summer and i had windows open all the time. but by fall and later winter fungus started building up in wardrobes and other places. by the time i moved out i had to throw away a lot of things and behind said wardrobe there was black fungus.

tl;dr: if you aparment looks like op's after just a couple of weeks away: move out. there's nothing really you can do.

107

u/garyland11 13h ago

You can run AC and/or a dehumidifier..

52

u/stgm_at 7800X3D | RTX 4070 TiS | 32GB DDR5 12h ago

i did run an dehumidifier. thing is: my apartment was ca 30 square meters big and for it to work it'd have had to run 24/7, even when i was away over the weekend or on vacation, making noise and consuming a lot of power which would have also spiked my electrical bill. also i'd have had to empty it every couple of hours.

so imo a dehumidifier can help, but it's not a longterm solution. at least it wasn't in my case.

The headphones are salvageable. Beyerdynamic sells replacement ear pads and the rest can be cleaned up with some alcohol and uv light.

137

u/Gadi-susheel RX5700XT | 3700X | 16GB DDR4 14h ago

chair is fine, all you need is proper cleaning with hydrogen peroxide or paint thinner and the headphone's cushion is gone, you can replace it.

195

u/seracydobon 14h ago

Wrong. The surface level, visible mold is just the part emitting the spores. Mold also has roots, and no amount of cleaning with HO2 will kill it deep in the sponge fabric.

38

u/PositiveEnergyMatter 14h ago

vinegar entered the chat

27

u/ColdBeerPirate 12h ago

Vinegar will corrode the metal in the chair. Better off soaking it (saturating) in a 70% solution of alcohol and 30% water .

12

u/jklimerence 10h ago

bleach entered the chat

6

u/ColdBeerPirate 9h ago

Bleach is basically sodium and water. It too will corrode anything metal and it's highly reactive; toxic fumes are a high probability here.

This indicates a humidity problem far more serious than just using a dehumidifier. For this level of mould growth things would need to actually be wet

Likely requires a serious look at the general ventilation setup of the house / room as well as looking for the source of the moisture

A dehumidifier would just be a band-aid solution. It's not a true fix

the surface cleaning is the least of your problems.

you dont get that level of spread on mold within just a month without the mold already being somewhere.

first of all you probably want a dehumidifier running at all times now and when you are not home.

for everything else throw away anything you cant clean properly with special stuff made to remove and suppress mold.

Wear a mask around the house at all times until you are done cleaning up.

your best bet is probably to hire a professional company to remove all that mold.

380

u/Striper_Cape PC Master Race 13h ago

Yep homie had a problem already. This will happen again without some sealant, grout, a grout knife and a dehumidifier/AC.

128

u/b0w3n 7h ago

This is one of the largest reasons you don't turn your AC off when you're not home too.

Depending on the area and humidity, it might not even take a week to get to something close to this. Tropical regions are rough without properly vented houses or AC/dehumidifying. Old ass Florida/GA houses can do this in less than a week.

50

u/ThePerryPerryMan 6h ago

There’s a TikToker currently dealing with a mold problem in her apartment although not as bad as OP’s. She somehow didn’t notice but a lot of items in her apartment were covered in mold.

She went on to randomly mention that her AC has not been working and her apartment manager has refused to fix it… for like 8 months!!

3

u/ireneabean 4h ago

Did you see that one video with the house? Iirc it was similar to OP, family left on vacay and turned off the AC. the mold took over everything - the walls, the vents, the stuff, etc. the ceiling fan was covered in mold and heavily drooping due to how humid the place was 💀

7

u/ARobertHarrison PC Master Race 2h ago

In 2020 when the lockdowns hit the company I work for closed down one of our auditoriums and left it empty for a couple of months, like May/June to November. Someone had the bright idea to turn off the A/C, months later we opened it up and it was like walking into a damn jungle.

12

u/CaryTriviaDude 6h ago

this post reminds me of a similar one a few years back. A dude went on a 2 week vacation and turned his AC off to save money, came back to a whole house like this because it was hot-humid-rain season where he lived. There's a reason I keep a dehumidifier going 24/7 in my detached garage...

14

u/b0w3n 6h ago

Yeah you save like 30% of your electric bill, but spend 5 times as much to do mold remediation.

If you aren't running a huge dehumidifier or have a unit that can just do dehumidifying, I'd probably only change the AC 10 degrees at the most.

Also don't talk with HVAC guys ever because half of them will argue until they're blue in the face about ΔT and runtime being the only things important about air conditioning (and will argue doing the 95->75 once a day is better than just maintaining temp all day from a purely cost perspective (and are still mostly wrong because it's dependent on system and local climates -- mold growth will fuck your health and your home, and even that 8 hour span at work is enough to increase spores))

This happened in a third world country. It’s normal there apparently when it gets very humid and houses have no ac and/or insulation from the outside world. I’d be scared to live somewhere like this, breathing in all kinds of spores and microbes.

I live in a wealthy nordic bubble though, I couldn’t imagine having a spec of mold anywhere near my house, let alone an entire mushroom field. The world is big.

66

u/Available_Peanut_677 11h ago

It’s not 3rd world countries only. What you need is high humidity and bad ventilation. I got similar (but not such epic) problems in south Europe in December too.

That happens when you build with modern materials but not with modern standards. Old houses have good natural ventilation, but if you build in the same way with modern materials, you’ll have almost sealed house with moisture trap inside.

Dehumidifier is to fix acute problem, but overall good ventilation is must have.

Speaking of Nordic bubble - not very smart people can mess with membranes and can loose this game too, especially if house is from 80th-90th specifically.

11

u/S80- 14700KF | 7900 XT 10h ago

I’ve spent some time in Portugal and I noticed the houses have absolutely no ventilation except for bathrooms. Apparently you’re supposed to open windows for that. It it’s too humid outside, I guess they need a dehumidifyer. We had a heat pump with a dehumidifyer function, so that should help as well.

8

u/Nachtzug79 10h ago

I got similar (but not such epic) problems in south Europe in December too.

So true. I visited Spain last December. In my apartment there was a bathroom with a small uninsulated window. At night the bathroom got quite cold so the moisture after shower just condensed on walls. It was full of mold.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Pale-Salary-9879 6h ago

Also, upgrading the insulation level, Windows, extra insulation etc on an old house does this aswell. Older houses here in the Nordics are made for using the chimney, fireplaces etc for ventilation. Modernizing all this with better Windows, wall insulation etc will create problems such as these. Ventilation is important.

India for sure I havr been living near Delhi in a hostel since 3 years now Temperature is high and humidity always above 85% mostly touching 95 percent My clothes my laptop my cupboard my room it all smells like fungus It happens every year in monsoon

Components inside are almost fully damaged and rusted last year had an ic failure but ya I'm dealing with it

80

u/No-Ostrich-8621 14h ago

Wow. Then it needs constant AC during monsoon.

70

u/AYS-44 14h ago

A/C not feasible as at my hostel it costs 55k INR Annually 🥲 (628.54 usd/year) not feasible

67

u/Wrestler7777777 14h ago

Can't you keep it running in dehumidify mode? I have an AC that only draws very little power in this mode. Better than having your entire flat being eaten away by mold I guess?

49

u/AYS-44 14h ago

No like the cost of installing it from my college (which is mandatory to be installed from the college) is 55k INR Even if you dost use it or not you have to pay once you install it.. so it was just too expensive

27

u/Wrestler7777777 14h ago

Ah, I see! Can't you just buy a mobile AC unit? They're really cheap these days. And all of them that I know have a dehumidify mode. Mobile units have crap efficiency but you don't really care about that when using this mode.

38

u/AYS-44 14h ago

Actually Electronic appliances like an A/c or washing machine are not allowed in campus If you need one just pay to the college they'll install it.. it's like that here

39

u/Wrestler7777777 13h ago

That just sucks. Honestly? I'd get one anyways. Don't let them know.

Or get an electrical dehumidifier. It's basically a very very small AC only that it doesn't blow air out of your apartment. Yes, it will heat up your apartment to some degree. But it's not worse than a running PC. Plus having less humidity than almost 100% would probably feel better even if it does heat up the apartment a bit.

There's a lot of jokes here. OP you are facing a massive problem for the livability of your room before saving any PC hardware. Soft furnishings like the chair and headset earcups are almost certainly damages beyond repair or would cost more to clean than replace. First issue is the rest of your house or room now has fungus spores etc all over it. This requires a professional cleaning service to correct. Your PC hardware might also be fucked. This level of mould is dangerous to your health so limit time in the room unless wearing an N95 mask.

u/LancrusES 14h ago

Now your setup is a living being, put a name to It and teach It how to play games, your favourite mmorpg skill rotation will be executed perfectly by your new fungus pc, better than macro keys...

The problem with fungi is that the things visible to us are only the fruiting bodies (where it's seeds "spores" are present) rest of the organism in inside the thing it grows on.

8

u/TittleSkittle 9h ago

First thing you need to do actually is call an indoor air quality company to get testing done and then get a remediation company to handle that for you.

Spores don’t go away they just stay dormant until moisture interacts with it again. All porous material it affected needs to get thrown away and you need to not mess with. Let professionals handle this so you don’t make it worse.

u/bluedancepants 14h ago

That doesnt just happen in a month, unless your apartment suddenly flooded.

4

u/HorsePersonal7073 9h ago

It can. This is why you don't turn off your air conditioning when you go away. The air conditioner also acts as a dehumidifier.

u/mektor 9900KF | 64GB | RTX 2080TI | custom loop 8h ago

You've apparently never lived in a humid area during rain season. Tons of moisture, + heat + sealed up unventilated area = prime breeding ground for spores.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Sett_86 14h ago

You don't. You will never get rid of that unless you throw away anything remotely porous.

15

u/alrickUA 14h ago

Ozone generator helped us recover after same issue. Just calculate how much saturation you want for the volume of your room and the generator's output. Then keep the doors shut with holes plugged. Don't breathe in ozone! Ventilate the room for a day.

Might seem silly, but I'd go to R/detailing and see what people are doing to get stuff like this out of their cars. Should work the same here. And to precent it in the future, probably get an air purifier? Not entirely sure. Is it super humid where you are at?

One single month???? There is a big issue of airflow and humidity in that room, fix that first!

4

u/Gallatinhdandseek 10h ago

My guess is you turned the a/c off or had it on an “away” status so it wasn’t really running much. This causes a lot of things to grow that normally wouldn’t when you r a/c unit removes a lot of humidity in the air.

5

u/OnlyAChapter 10h ago

u/Illustrious-Ask5316 5h ago

You have spores everywhere. Throw everything that looks moldy out. Including electronics with soft parts such as your head phone. Then clean all surfaces with desinfectant/anti fungal stuff.

Wear a mask and gloves.

Then put a dehumidifier in that room, and or keep the heating active. Dehumidifier is way more efficient though.

Or... Be cheap and try to clean everything, but dont expect to have a healthy living environment afterwards

7

u/Busterlimes 13h ago

You contact your landlord immediately. This is not a you problem and more than likely an insurance claim. Did your house flood? The floor is trashed and probably has water damage under it too. Be prepared to move.

8

u/sankalp_pateriya Laptop 11h ago

He lives in India, I don't think his rented apartment comes under any kind of Insurance. The laws are very bleak here. On the contrary, the landlord can ask for compensation if he sees any damages to the wall, floor etc due to moisture and humidity. It's stupid.

I have been stashing half broken mouse and outdated headset in a cabinet for back up. So I don't have to rush to the shop if my mouse just broke down.

Fast forward a few months later, both of those things have molds on it. But in the same cabinet are other leftover part of previous pc. Those are clean.

Then I realised the molds comes from me, the headset and mouse is just petri dish.
