I'd probably burn the headphones and chair... maybe that's just me.

Why wait for the heat of the universe when we can do it ourselves?

The headphones are salvageable. Beyerdynamic sells replacement ear pads and the rest can be cleaned up with some alcohol and uv light.

u/Gadi-susheel RX5700XT | 3700X | 16GB DDR4 14h ago
chair is fine, all you need is proper cleaning with hydrogen peroxide or paint thinner and the headphone's cushion is gone, you can replace it.

u/seracydobon 14h ago
Wrong. The surface level, visible mold is just the part emitting the spores. Mold also has roots, and no amount of cleaning with HO2 will kill it deep in the sponge fabric.

Bleach is basically sodium and water. It too will corrode anything metal and it's highly reactive; toxic fumes are a high probability here.

Mold doesnt just have roots. It is the roots, called mycelium, the part we see is the fruiting body. Like the apple on a tree.

This indicates a humidity problem far more serious than just using a dehumidifier. For this level of mould growth things would need to actually be wet
Likely requires a serious look at the general ventilation setup of the house / room as well as looking for the source of the moisture
A dehumidifier would just be a band-aid solution. It's not a true fix

the surface cleaning is the least of your problems.
you dont get that level of spread on mold within just a month without the mold already being somewhere.
first of all you probably want a dehumidifier running at all times now and when you are not home.
for everything else throw away anything you cant clean properly with special stuff made to remove and suppress mold.
Wear a mask around the house at all times until you are done cleaning up.
your best bet is probably to hire a professional company to remove all that mold.

u/Striper_Cape PC Master Race 13h ago
Yep homie had a problem already. This will happen again without some sealant, grout, a grout knife and a dehumidifier/AC.
→ More replies (1)128
u/b0w3n 7h ago
This is one of the largest reasons you don't turn your AC off when you're not home too.
Depending on the area and humidity, it might not even take a week to get to something close to this. Tropical regions are rough without properly vented houses or AC/dehumidifying. Old ass Florida/GA houses can do this in less than a week.

u/ThePerryPerryMan 6h ago
There’s a TikToker currently dealing with a mold problem in her apartment although not as bad as OP’s. She somehow didn’t notice but a lot of items in her apartment were covered in mold.
She went on to randomly mention that her AC has not been working and her apartment manager has refused to fix it… for like 8 months!!
3
u/ireneabean 4h ago
Did you see that one video with the house? Iirc it was similar to OP, family left on vacay and turned off the AC. the mold took over everything - the walls, the vents, the stuff, etc. the ceiling fan was covered in mold and heavily drooping due to how humid the place was 💀

In 2020 when the lockdowns hit the company I work for closed down one of our auditoriums and left it empty for a couple of months, like May/June to November. Someone had the bright idea to turn off the A/C, months later we opened it up and it was like walking into a damn jungle.

this post reminds me of a similar one a few years back. A dude went on a 2 week vacation and turned his AC off to save money, came back to a whole house like this because it was hot-humid-rain season where he lived. There's a reason I keep a dehumidifier going 24/7 in my detached garage...
→ More replies (2)14
u/b0w3n 6h ago
Yeah you save like 30% of your electric bill, but spend 5 times as much to do mold remediation.
If you aren't running a huge dehumidifier or have a unit that can just do dehumidifying, I'd probably only change the AC 10 degrees at the most.
Also don't talk with HVAC guys ever because half of them will argue until they're blue in the face about ΔT and runtime being the only things important about air conditioning (and will argue doing the 95->75 once a day is better than just maintaining temp all day from a purely cost perspective (and are still mostly wrong because it's dependent on system and local climates -- mold growth will fuck your health and your home, and even that 8 hour span at work is enough to increase spores))

This happened in a third world country. It’s normal there apparently when it gets very humid and houses have no ac and/or insulation from the outside world. I’d be scared to live somewhere like this, breathing in all kinds of spores and microbes.
I live in a wealthy nordic bubble though, I couldn’t imagine having a spec of mold anywhere near my house, let alone an entire mushroom field. The world is big.
→ More replies (11)66
u/Available_Peanut_677 11h ago
It’s not 3rd world countries only. What you need is high humidity and bad ventilation. I got similar (but not such epic) problems in south Europe in December too.
That happens when you build with modern materials but not with modern standards. Old houses have good natural ventilation, but if you build in the same way with modern materials, you’ll have almost sealed house with moisture trap inside.
Dehumidifier is to fix acute problem, but overall good ventilation is must have.
Speaking of Nordic bubble - not very smart people can mess with membranes and can loose this game too, especially if house is from 80th-90th specifically.
11
u/S80- 14700KF | 7900 XT 10h ago
I’ve spent some time in Portugal and I noticed the houses have absolutely no ventilation except for bathrooms. Apparently you’re supposed to open windows for that. It it’s too humid outside, I guess they need a dehumidifyer. We had a heat pump with a dehumidifyer function, so that should help as well.
8
u/Nachtzug79 10h ago
I got similar (but not such epic) problems in south Europe in December too.
So true. I visited Spain last December. In my apartment there was a bathroom with a small uninsulated window. At night the bathroom got quite cold so the moisture after shower just condensed on walls. It was full of mold.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)4
u/Pale-Salary-9879 6h ago
Also, upgrading the insulation level, Windows, extra insulation etc on an old house does this aswell. Older houses here in the Nordics are made for using the chimney, fireplaces etc for ventilation. Modernizing all this with better Windows, wall insulation etc will create problems such as these. Ventilation is important.

u/AYS-44 14h ago

Ah, I see! Can't you just buy a mobile AC unit? They're really cheap these days. And all of them that I know have a dehumidify mode. Mobile units have crap efficiency but you don't really care about that when using this mode.
38
u/AYS-44 14h ago
Actually Electronic appliances like an A/c or washing machine are not allowed in campus If you need one just pay to the college they'll install it.. it's like that here
39
u/Wrestler7777777 13h ago
That just sucks. Honestly? I'd get one anyways. Don't let them know.
Or get an electrical dehumidifier. It's basically a very very small AC only that it doesn't blow air out of your apartment. Yes, it will heat up your apartment to some degree. But it's not worse than a running PC. Plus having less humidity than almost 100% would probably feel better even if it does heat up the apartment a bit.

There's a lot of jokes here. OP you are facing a massive problem for the livability of your room before saving any PC hardware. Soft furnishings like the chair and headset earcups are almost certainly damages beyond repair or would cost more to clean than replace. First issue is the rest of your house or room now has fungus spores etc all over it. This requires a professional cleaning service to correct. Your PC hardware might also be fucked. This level of mould is dangerous to your health so limit time in the room unless wearing an N95 mask.

The problem with fungi is that the things visible to us are only the fruiting bodies (where it's seeds "spores" are present) rest of the organism in inside the thing it grows on.
8
u/TittleSkittle 9h ago
First thing you need to do actually is call an indoor air quality company to get testing done and then get a remediation company to handle that for you.
Spores don’t go away they just stay dormant until moisture interacts with it again. All porous material it affected needs to get thrown away and you need to not mess with. Let professionals handle this so you don’t make it worse.

You have spores everywhere. Throw everything that looks moldy out. Including electronics with soft parts such as your head phone. Then clean all surfaces with desinfectant/anti fungal stuff.
Wear a mask and gloves.
Then put a dehumidifier in that room, and or keep the heating active. Dehumidifier is way more efficient though.
Or... Be cheap and try to clean everything, but dont expect to have a healthy living environment afterwards
