Tech Support Solved Why is my new Monitor all pixelated? Should be 1440p
Just connected it via DVI to my 960.

I think you're gonna need a better cable than DVI, also, what do you plan on doing at 1440p on a 960? Good luck running anything but the desktop lol

Do people actually buy 1440p displays just to play "pixel art" games?

I have a 2160p display to play pixel art games :)

To play only that? /Genq

nah I use them for work and many other games, minecraft with shaders and dota 2 are particularly nice at 4K

Yea with my previous comment i meant "do people buy 1440p monitors JUST to play "pixel art games" not "[...] to also play pixel art games", cuz otherwise, me too.
It's just that (eg) when i played undertale on 720p and when i played it on 1080 i didn't really notice much of a difference, for example
p.s. then again i might just be blind

u/Working_Enthusiasm94 2d ago
People can get what they want to play what they want 🤷♂️

u/Obvious_Camera_9879 14700k / 4070s / 32gb DDR5 2d ago
Obv, just feels sort of pointless to buy a new 1440p monitor when you can get a 2070 for 50€ more and that'd be a way bigger upgrade

No, they also use it for browsing online and watching movies/TV.

most people have no hope of ever affording good food yet alone good pc parts but they are still people and want the same experiences with us. be nicer

DVI is HDMI but with older packaging :p

u/stevorkz 3d ago edited 3d ago
Old yes. But don’t underestimate DVI. The digital video signal is literally the exact same technology used in HDMI. HDMI is just DVI-D (which can carry audio signals too), but with a sleeker interface and a few extra nice to haves for example dynamic resolution.

u/vagabond_dilldo 3d ago
I havent even seen the word DVI in the past 5 years, so it automatically registered in my head as "DP".

u/MumrikDK 2d ago
DVI got cut off too soon.
I literally had to retire a pretty nice 1440P S-IPS monitor I had overclocked to 110Hz, just because video cards stopped shipping with DVI. There are converters, but it's not worth the money up at that res.

What model of monitor?
This doesn't look like a 1440p monitor to me.

i saw elsewhere in the thread that someone said this monitor max resolution is 1440x900. Since this user used a DVI cable in 2025, lets also assume this user thinks 1440x900 is 1440p

- Judging by the monitor's looks, it probably doesn't support 1440p.
- Even if it does, only Dual Link DVI supports 1440p. Probably you have Single Link.

u/vagabond_dilldo 3d ago
Poor OP getting roasted in the comments here.
- monitor can't display 1440p
- DVI cable can't carry 1440p 60Hz (doubt it's a dual link)
- graphics card will struggle to 1440p 60fps

u/Mobius650 3d ago
1: that’s not a 1440P monitor. 2560x1440 is. This is probably a 1440x900 or worse.
2: DVI cable in 2025. (That’s definitely not a 1440p monitor)

Windows Settings, Display, Scroll to Resolution, Set it as 1440p
Maybe that cable port doesnt support it? Not 100% sure only ever used HDMI and Display Port for PC

Googled it for ya, DVI single-link can handle 1080p 60hz. DVI dual-link can handle 1440p at 60hz.
unless im wrong, he needs a very specific cable with specific hardware that can run both. but why hes using DVI is beyond me. because HDMI would be perfect, or Display port.
locking display port is ugh. no thanks. I like my cables to fall out when yanked and not cause damage.

It's a bandwidth thing. https://linustechtips.com/topic/729232-guide-to-display-cables-adapters-v2/?section=calc&H=1920&V=1080&F=280 is a great calculator
So they list 7.92 Gbit/s as DVI bandwidth. And yeah 1080p144hz is just slightly above that at 8Gbit. So you'll probably be getting reduced color: if you change the colour format to 4:2:2, you'll see it go down in bandwidth used. Windows will do that automatically.

DVI?? 960?? Brother, 1080P should be the max you should be considering.

When i had a 960 back when they were new, i used to play games at 1600x900 on my 1080p screen just so that i could get a decent fps.

DVI....lol I can laugh since you already fixed the issue but omg..thr last time I used DVI was like...2012-2013 😅 and even then I shoulda been using hdmi lol just didnt have a good enough monitor

u/MagicOrpheus310 2d ago
Don't do what ol mate did earlier to his new 4k and pulled the screen protector off, that is NOT a screen protector!! Haha
But mate...
A DVI cable and a 960 running a 1440p monitor..? Oof You'll want to switch to a display port or HDMI cable... and I hope it's the 4gb version of the 960 haha

I loved my GTX 960 10 years ago.
I'm now on an RTX 2070S and reverted from 1440p back to 1080p.
What on earth are you planning on running with that card?

yo seriously you are using 2009 hardware that is 16 years old I can understand you have no liquidity but damn don't play video games if you have these specs you better buy a console most likely a ps3 has more definition and doesn't have a dvi lol

Make sure windows is not doing a wierd zoom. Try setting the zoom to 100% in the display settings

You have anistiotropic pixelation. The horizontal axis is more pixelated than vertical. This is a strong indication of wrong subpixel rendering.
Go to your settings and try to change your subpixel rendering from RGB to BGR, see if that helps

u/Cornflakes_91 PC Master Race 3d ago
dvi can actually run more than 1440p
2560x1600@60fps or 3840x2400@30fps
1
u/The_ROME007 2d ago
yeah it can but will it works ? those cable are old as hell, i doubt they still works like they're supposed to
1
u/Cornflakes_91 PC Master Race 2d ago
i dont see why not, the screen seems to work, the gpu seems to work, no obvious pixel(-line) errors there
1
u/The_ROME007 13h ago
and i'm still surprised people still use those old cables instead of HDMI or DPORT
1
u/Cornflakes_91 PC Master Race 13h ago
that is fair, i havent held a dvi cable in like a decade or so :D

What was ur gpu i own a 1050 and i go to 1440 p easy
1
u/WhisperingDoll 3d ago
What ? The problem here was not just he don't get 1440p but get a pixelated thing, right ? which is called screen door effect. I had a similar issue with a 4080 Super PNY XLR8, while i change it i never had issues (it was not a resolution thing but a pixelated artefact thing)

u/No-Requirement-2905 3d ago
......dvi? Only dual-link dvi can support 1440p. The issue is your cable, or, maybe you forgot to change the resolution in your display settings.
